Campus Life and Social Media

In the Office of Student Life, we spend much of the summer planning ahead (something that's all too difficult to do during the rush of a school year). This summer, a few of us have been brainstorming about how to harness social media to enhance campus life. We want to build better connections among students, and between staff and students. We're hoping to supply relevant and timely information about programs, student organizations, campus news and opportunities to make a difference in our community. We're ready to leap beyond static web sites . . . but into what? Foursquare check-ins and Twitter updates from campus events? TED Talks-style videos highlighting campus personalities and issues? Live online chats? If Student Life had an app, what would it do, or enable you to do?

We've given ourselves a deadline of August 15th to get our plans together and be ready to launch. We've taken a few tiny, preliminary steps: check out/subscribe to the Twitter feeds from UMBCEvents (Shannon Booker from The Commons), UMBCCampusLife and UMBCStudentOrgs (Sara Leidner from the Office of Student Life) and CoCreateUMBC (that's me), and see/like the newly created Facebook pages for UMBCEvents, UMBCCampusLife, UMBCStudentOrgs and CoCreateUMBC. There's not an abundance of content yet, but there will be (and SEB has been at this for a while; see umbcseb on Twitter, UMBC SEB and UMBC SEB Street Team on Facebook). Meanwhile, please, help us out here: What should we be creating? How can we/you use social media to enhance your UMBC experience?
The day included introductions and goal-setting. Dr. Janet Rutledge, Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education, was the afternoon speaker. Dr. Rutledge discussed rules and regulations regarding defense preparation and graduation requirements. She also discussed the importance of putting in the work to develop a strong, professional, long-term relationship with your mentor. In this case, your mentor is your advisor, and your relationship should be collegial and should be built to last.

What I Learn from Students

I remember when I was a college student hearing members of the faculty and administration talk about how much they had learned from students. I didn’t believe a word of it. It seemed like a throwaway phrase, appropriate to certain occasions but not to be taken literally, much like when someone winning an important award would contend that they had been “humbled” by the recognition.

Now, decades later, I’m genuinely humbled to realize how wrong I was. I learn from UMBC students all the time, and I’m particularly mindful of their lessons this week as some of those who have taught me the most are getting ready to graduate. The truth is that I’m not the complete, polished master of my circumstances that I once imagined most adults to be. Like every other person I know, I’m still learning how to live, and how to be my best self. And students, even (especially?) when they have experienced themselves as underprepared, overwhelmed or confused, have taught me plenty.

The most powerful lessons I learn from students come in two contexts. One is when they navigate everyday challenges on campus: choosing a major and a career path, dealing with an uncooperative peer, striving to build a positive culture within a student organization, balancing conflicting responsibilities. The contours and nuances of these challenges are the stuff of life, not just on campus but everywhere. So when I work with students as they figure things out, I identify strongly with them. Their successes and setbacks help me understand my own. And when despite the uncertainty and ambiguity they take action that is profoundly wise, or courageous, or self-sacrificing, or even just surprising—and this happens every day—I absorb their example.

One of our graduating seniors was (and in some ways still is) a shy person: just like me, especially when I was in college. But from her freshman year, whenever her work in SGA could be advanced by speaking in public—to rooms full of older peers or powerful adults, or to an entire class of new students at Convocation—she faced her fears and met the challenge. Another graduating senior struggled with his choice of a major. Even as he sifted through options and ultimately found his path, he was building an organization to help younger students find inspiration and fulfillment in their education. How could I fail to become a little braver, a little more willing to take risks to support good causes, with people like these showing me the way? And what more valuable lessons could there be than the ones that actually make me a stronger, more capable person?

The other context in which I learn a lot from students is when they share ideas and life experiences different from my own. Their diverse stories are new windows on the world, helping me gain much-needed perspective on what’s happening at UMBC and beyond. For example, after eight years at UMBC I feel quite comfortable and welcome. But students help me see this familiar place through a different lens, and to recognize and address features that can make it difficult for newcomers to feel at home in our community.

So thanks to the many UMBC students who have been my teachers, especially the ones about to graduate. I'm grateful for your lessons, and will carry them with me long after you've walked across that 1st Mariner Arena stage.

Campus Safety Walk Report

In this guest post, Divya Patel, who just completed her 1-year term as SGA's Director of Finance and Operations, reports on a "safety walk" she took with members of the UMBC administration.

Last month, I had the opportunity to go on a Safety Walk around campus at night with Paul Dillon (Deputy Chief of UMBC Police), Ben Goldberg (Acting Director of Off-Campus and Transfer Student Services), and Joseph Regier (Director of The Commons). We walked around campus checking for potential safety hazards such as broken lights, blue lights, hiding spots for burglars, and necessary sidewalks and speed limits.

Problems noticed during the Walk:

Sidewalk needed that connects TRC and Poplar Avenue.

Bushes behind dining hall could serve as a hiding spot for people intending to assault passers-by (addressed by trimming the bushes).

Broken streetlights

Center Road

Academic Row (addressed)

Pond (addressed)

Poplar Avenue

    Walker Avenue

Library loading dock

    Admin Drive (near tennis courts)

Commons Drive (that leads to the tunnel),

Hilltop Circle (near Walker Avenue Apartments).

More lights needed in Lot 6 (West Hill Apartments), TRC, and Interfaith Center (Center Road). (addressed)

University Center Plaza: tree roots are lifting up the tiles

Bus stop visibility (addressed)

Park Road regarding pedestrian traffic, parking, and speed limits (addressed by lowering speed limits around the loop to 20mph and within the campus to 15 mph – more work still needed)

Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management, Rusty Postlewate, has also been extremely helpful in trying to remedy these potential safety concerns.

In the next post, I will go more in detail about some of these safety hazards; specifically, regarding Park Road and a new program that the UMBC Police Department will be proposing similar to Emergency Blue Light Phones. I will also keep you updated on what gets fixed. Meanwhile, e-mail me at divya.patel@umbc.edu or comment below if you have any safety concerns or questions.
