A Media Guide from the 1978 Season of Men's Soccer at UMBC
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a media guide from the 1978 season of men's soccer at UMBC.

The very first intercollegiate game played by UMBC was in soccer in 1966. The newly formed team played against University of Maryland, College Park, losing 4 to 1. Soccer, as well as lacrosse and baseball, were among the first intercollegiate teams to be inaugurated by UMBC's athletic department within UMBC's first year of operation. Basketball would soon follow spurred by the pressing demands of UMBC students. Just ten years later, in 1977, the soccer team would also become the first team at UMBC to compete in a postseason NCAA tournament (see photograph below).

Hope everyone had a great holiday and is spending the last couple weeks of break relaxing! I am excited (and a little sad) to say that this will be
my last post as the marketing intern! It has been a great experience
interacting and working with you all.
I am excited to introduce you to Sahar Naimi, the newest
Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship marketing intern.
Sahar is an experienced photographer, fashion and
beauty blogger and is currently an Information Systems student, with a minor
in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and pursuing a certificate in French.

ART 319 is now considered an ENTR Minor elective!
Be sure to sign up for this spring class!
We are happy to announce that ART 319 - Space and Place in Public Art and Urbanism, is now an approved course in the ENTR Minor!
It will be offered this spring on Thursdays from 9:30 - 12:00pm. The class does not have enough students enrolled at the moment so we are trying to get more students interested. The the instructor will waive the 200 level art history pre-req as long as the student has taken another 200 level humanities course. Contact Professor Preminda Jacob (pjacob2@umbc.edu) to get permission.

Archives Gold #14: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th
An Issue of Dialogue, UMBC's First Literary Magazine
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present UMBC's first literary magazine, Dialogue.

UMBC's first literary magazine, Dialogue, was created in 1967 and lasted for only two short years. Early issues of the magazine contained short poems and stories. However, a poem included and written by editor of Dialogue, Glenn Blanchard, in the second edition of the magazine stirred up controversy at UMBC. His poem alluded to racial tensions and used explicit language, upsetting many members of the UMBC community. Chancellor Albin O. Kuhn defended the journal and students' right to free speech, but after a controversy ensued once again (over the display of nude photographs within the Fall 1968 edition of Dialogue), the magazine fell apart and was ordered by Kuhn to officially stop its production.
