See for yourself at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture exhibition of</span><span> <a href="http://events.umbc.edu/go/63000" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">A Designed Life: Contemporary American Textile, Wallpapers, and Containers &amp; Packaging</a>, </span><span>This exhibition focuses on the use of modern design textiles and consumer goods of the mid-20th century and how they were used by the U.S Department of State in the 1950s to promote American culture in post WWII Europe. See how something so small as a square of wallpaper or fabric was used to communicate with people across the globe about life in America.</span></p>
    <br><p><a href="http://events.umbc.edu/go/60838" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>A Designed Life opens with a reception</span><span> Thursday, September 13th, 5-7pm</span></a></p>
    <br><p><span>Also on view Thursday evening in the Albin O. Kuhn Library is the exhibition </span><span><a href="http://events.umbc.edu/go/60732" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Depth of Field: Acquisitions to the Photography Collections, 2008-2018</a></span><span><a href="http://events.umbc.edu/go/60732" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">,</a> </span><span>presenting approximately one hundred images acquired over the last ten years by UMBC’s Photography Collections through gifts from donors and artists (on view in through December 19.)</span></p>
    <p><span>Featured artists include Albert Arthur Allen, Laurie Brown, Kristin Capp, Clarence Carvell BFA ’93, Chim (David Seymour), William Eggleston, Donna Ferrato, Robert Fichter, Todd Forsgren, Peggy Fox, Sally Gall, Ralph Gibson, Penny Harris, Sam Holden, Irina Ionesco, Walter Iooss, Lotte Jacobi, N. Jay Jaffee, Brian Jones, Nate Larson, David S.     <span>Course Reserves are course-related materials made available, either electronically or physically, through the UMBC Library. Items that may be on reserve for a class include: books, videos, textbooks, articles, and book chapters.  While an item is on course reserve its loan period is shortened, usually to three hours, so that it can be accessed by a greater number of students throughout the semester.</span><br><br><span>You can check whether your professor has put anything on reserve by going to </span><a href="https://library.umbc.edu/reserves/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://library.umbc.edu/reserves/</a><span>.</span><br><br><strong>Note:</strong><span> The library does not normally purchase textbooks.  Many of our reserves are personal copies provided by generous faculty members!  Others are purchased at the request of faculty members.</span>

    <p><span>Annual Idea Competition deadline is Oct 11--Win up to $750!!</span></p>
    <br><p><span>Do YOU have the next great idea? Itching to create a positive impact on society? Share your ideas with us and you might just be able to do that and win up to $750! We want to help bring your ideas to life, and here’s how you can make this a reality!</span></p>
    <p><span>The UMBC Idea Competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities all around us. As one of the most innovative schools in the nation, UMBC harbors many innovative students that have ideas that can change the world, and we believe students like you are capable of making this happen.</span></p>
    <p><span>Simply answer a few questions and submit your idea via the entry form to share your idea with us. The top entries will be judged by a panel of professionals and alumni, along with a crowd of students on </span><span>November 15, 2018, </span><span>at the final competition in the Sports Zone in the Commons. Video entries via YouTube are allowed as well, but are limited to 60 seconds.</span></p>

    <li><p><span>2nd Prize                $500</span></p></li>

    <p><span>To enter the competition, complete the </span><a href="https://docs.google.com/a/umbc.edu/forms/d/1mgDKIGVY-N8Bozu9TEg2DupwVVNGKUyzd11k_EAFbaI/viewform" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>UMBC Idea Competition Entry Form</span></a><span> where you will describe your idea along with a description of the problem or opportunity you wish to apply it to. Submission forms will be limited to </span><span>one page</span><span>, so you will need to articulate the problem you have identified and your idea briefly yet effectively. </span><span>Video entries</span><span> submitted via YouTube are also allowed in which you can personally pitch your idea. Although they are not required, they are encouraged as an effective way to communicate ideas to the review committee. YouTube videos are limited to 60 seconds and creativity is encouraged. Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be considered by the judges.</span></p>
