The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks an Engagement Manager for the Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Network (B/CAN), a new 10 year city-wide initiative providing strategic and as needed, just in time support for arts entrepreneurs of all disciplines and backgrounds in an effort to foster a stronger, more equitable creative ecosystem and economy in Baltimore.

The B/CAN Engagement Manager will function as the key promoter and navigator for all B/CAN programs, reporting directly to the Executive Director. We are looking for a highly collaborative, passionate, and detail-oriented person who can not only help build excitement for B/CAN and local arts businesses, but will also contribute their ideas and passion for strengthening Baltimore’s creative community to the program.

Gun Show: Handling, Questioning, Discussing

Dr. Kathy O’Dell opens her essay in the brochurethat accompanies Gun Show with this question: “How does it feel to hold a gun?” At an event on October 5, starting at 4:00 PM at the CADVC and then moving to the Fine Arts Amphitheater, attendees will have an opportunity to explore that question as they view and handle (if they so wish) a selection of David Hess’s sculptures/facsimile guns currently on display in his exhibition. As attendees participate in the viewing and handling, special guests will be present to facilitate small group discussions on many of the wide-ranging issues that arise around guns: who does or does not own them, who should or should not own them, whether or not to legislate them, safe ways to use them, ramifications of their use or misuse, and how issues of race, class, gender, and age are embedded in these questions.

Admission to the exhibition and all related programming is free and open to the public.

“Harmonious Monk: Martin Luther and His Reformation through Music”
Christopher Boyd Brown, Associate Professor of Church History, Boston University

Dr. Christopher Boyd Brown and UMBC’s Camerata and Collegium Musicum will present an interdisciplinary concert-lecture on Martin Luther’s use of music and the community practice of hymn-singing in the Protestant Reformation. Brown will discuss how Lutheran hymns, sung in the streets and homes as well as in community spaces, were central to the success of the Reformation. UMBC students will provide live musical examples of plainchant, Reformation hymns, and multi-part choral works by Walter and Bach.

The annual UMBC Idea competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities all around us. If UMBC is one of the most innovative schools in the nation, then UMBC students are just the kind of innovators that can really change the world. This is your chance to make it happen.

Simply answer a handful of general questions regarding your idea on the entry form (video pitches are allowed, just link your video to your form). The top entries will be judged by a panel of professionals and alumni, along with a crowd of students on November 16, 2017, at the final competition in the Commons Sports Zone.

How to Enter

To enter the competition, complete the UMBC Idea Competition Entry Form, which asks you to describe a problem or opportunity, and describe your idea for addressing it. Submission forms will be limited to one page, so you will need to articulate the problem you have identified and your idea succinctly. You will also be allowed to post a video to YouTube in which you can personally pitch your idea to the campus. The videos are not required, but they are encouraged as an effective way to communicate ideas to the review committee. YouTube videos are limited to 60 seconds and creativity is encouraged. Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be considered by the judges.

The Department of Visual Arts presents a lecture with visiting artist Brandon Morse, a Washington, D.C. based artist who works with generative systems as a means to examine the ways in which physical phenomena such as entropy and emergence can function in ways that are both poetic and metaphorical. 

The Walters Art Museum is accepting applicants for the Carol Bates Fellowship. In June 2018, the Walters will re-open One West Mount Vernon Place, the historic house that is part of the Walters campus. With the revitalization of One West, the Walters is taking a dynamic new approach to the presentation of art while preserving a building that is an architectural treasure all undertaken with the goal of enriching the visitor experience.
