Motivational Monday TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>"How racial bias works - and how to disrupt it."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is How racial bias works - and how to disrupt it by Jennifer L. Eberhardt. Our brains create categories to make sense of the world, recognize patterns and make quick decisions. But this ability to categorize also exacts a heavy toll in the form of unconscious bias. In this powerful talk, psychologist Jennifer L. Eberhardt explores how our biases unfairly target Black people at all levels of society -- from schools and social media to policing and criminal justice -- and discusses how creating points of friction can help us actively interrupt and address this troubling problem.

After you watch, we invite you to reflect on the following:

What resonated for you in the video?

What lived experiences do you have, either personally or professionally that align with the core message of the talk?

As you think of your role as a student, employee, or manager what feels relevant and useful to remember?

What are you taking away that feels meaningful - either a new perspective, a potential action, etc.

How might we take better care of ourselves and each other during this time?

If you're a supervisor, consider using this talk for team building purposes! You might send the video ahead of your meeting with several reflection questions on which you'd like your staff to come prepared to speak.

This week's spotlight course is Overcoming Your Own Unconscious Biases (22 min).

Each of us is a member of a society that is often partitioned into groups and tribes. While this is common to most societies, it can have harmful effects in the workplace, interfering with productivity and organizational success. We all hold biases, whether conscious or unconscious. Part of understanding the role of unconscious bias in the workplace is admitting to yourself that you, too, hold biases. Once accepted, you can take an anti-bias approach to overcoming unconscious prejudice. In this course, you'll learn how to recognize your own unconscious and implicit bias and how they can fall prey to social stereotypes.

Participants will learn to:

identify how to recognize your unconscious biases

identify tactics for observing your own unconscious biases

recognize how to overcome unconscious bias by forming relationships with others

identify guidelines for avoiding unconscious bias when making decisions

identify the tactics for combating bias revival

recognize the process for overcoming your unconscious biases

Motivational Monday TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>"How to turn your dissatisfaction into action."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is How to turn your dissatisfaction into action by Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr. After the devastating rebel invasion of Freetown in 1999 and the Ebola epidemic in 2014, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, mayor of the city, refused to be paralyzed by her frustration with the status quo. Instead, she used her anger as a catalyst for action. In this inspiring talk, she shares how she transformed her city by taking the risks necessary to bring about dramatic change -- and shows how you can find power in your dissatisfaction.

SkillSoft Spotlight Course of the Week ~ For Supervisors

<Tagline>Bridging the Diversity Gap</Tagline>

SkillSoft Spotlights focus on just-in-time online learning to help you more masterfully manage yourself personally and professionally, improve your effectiveness in managing your work, and support you in skillfully leading your teams. Each course is 30 minutes or less and is curated to provide tools, strategies, and practices to accelerate your success.

This week's spotlight course is Bridging the Diversity Gap (27 min)

Without a diverse workforce, organizations run the risk of viewing things from a very limited perspective. The organization provides the structure for operation, but it's the individuals within that organization who carry out the mission of the organization. To get the most innovative solutions from the individuals in your business, you need to create a workplace that embraces inclusion and avoids bias and stereotyping.
This course focuses on what diversity is and how to leverage the diversity within the organization. You’ll also explore the barriers, such as unconscious bias, that must be overcome to create a diversified and inclusive working environment.

Participants will learn to:

identify key concepts related to diversity in the workplace

match the approaches organizations use to deal with diversity to appropriate actions

identify how companies can benefit by embracing diversity

recognize how prejudice and stereotypes can cause barriers for some employees in the workplace

recognize the implications of cultural expectations on diversity in the workplace

identify reasons organizations may encounter resistance to diversity in the workplace

recognize the importance of workplace diversity and the barriers that must be overcome to embrace its benefits

Motivational Monday TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>"We need to address the real roots of racial violence."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is We need to address the real roots of racial violence by Megan Ming Francis. Why does the killing of unarmed blacks continue to happen?" asks political scientist Megan Ming Francis. She makes an urgent case for a new approach to these tragic deaths, explaining that we need to look at the deeper causes of systemic racism rather than settle for easy fixes.
