OER and Accessibility

One of the major goals of the open education movement is to ensure that learning materials are available and usable widely. Accessibility can be a barrier to widespread OER use and adoption, and is often an afterthought to many textbook publishers. In this session we'll explain what we mean by accessibility, remediation, and the work this entails. We'll provide a set of small but simple ways for you to ensure that your learning materials meet accessibility standards.
 
Creating OER with Students

Student voices need to be central in OER projects, especially considering that they are the final users of these materials. In this session, we will showcase a range of OER that have been co-created with students. We will consider the following questions: Where can students join the publishing process? What conversations around ownership, copyright, licensing need to be had? How can this experience be enriching for students?
 
Interactive Textbooks with H5P
Thursday, Apr. 22, 2021 | 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. 
With the shift to digital learning in online classrooms, we are reminded about the potential of OER to better engage with our students. This session will introduce H5P, a free tool that lets you create interactive content to embed in your textbooks. We'll look at the range of content types in H5P, see examples from published textbooks, and highlight other tools you can use to make dynamic OER.

The Call for Proposals for the 2021 Faculty OER Mini-grants is now open. The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative has several grant opportunities for faculty who are interested in unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER, creation/revision and publication of OER in high-need areas, and evaluation of OER use in relation to student success. 

Available grants in 2021 include:
  • Adopt/Adapt OER ($1,000 grant + Participation in the Lumen Circles Community of Practice);
  • Create/Revise and Publish OER ($2,000 grant + Participation in the Rebus Textbook Success Program); and
  • Evaluate OER ($3,000 grant + Dedicated Coaching)
Proposals are due March 1, 2021.

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative is now accepting session proposals for the 2021 M.O.S.T. State Summit, which will take place virtually April 8-9, 2021. 

The theme of the 2021 conference is Using OER to Advance Equity and Inclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic and continuing patterns of racialized violence have brought to the forefront inequities in educational access, preparation, and experiences on our campuses. How might the use of open educational resources (OER) advance equity and inclusion at our postsecondary institutions and statewide? 

This call invites proposals for short concurrent presentations, birds of a feather sessions, and panel discussions related to this theme.

We are especially interested in proposals that:
  • Demonstrate how institutions, units, and groups have been reflective about their use of OER and how they are exploring the contours of equity and inclusion in relation to OER;
  • Share strategies to modify, remix, and curate additional resources to diversify and extend the cultural relevance of OER materials;
  • Describe concrete strategies for reducing and eliminating barriers to engaging with OER for faculty, students, and/or staff;
  • Showcase faculty and student work with open education in Maryland, and highlight resources created and adapted by Maryland faculty and staff; and
  • Examine the relationship between OER, pedagogical innovation, and student success.
The submission deadline is February 5, 2021, with notifications sent out by February 19, 2021.

Last month, we reflected on the transition from face-to-face instruction to online instruction for one of UMBC's largest introductory courses CHEM 101, with its instructors Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter.  

We discussed some recent articles that have been on our mind: 
Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter originally began their journey shifting their super-sized CHEM 101 course through the Alternative Delivery Program (ADP), originally intending their course to be delivered in a hybrid model. This modality would give them the flexibility to foster synchronous active learning, and asynchronous lecture and content delivery. 

While rebuilding many components of the course, Sarah and Tara were deeply intentional about the costs associated with course materials. Recognizing that high costs presented challenges to access course materials, Sarah and Tara employed Open Educational Resources which substantially lowered the total cost of materials for their course. 

Assessments play an integral role in this course. Before UMBC's physical campus closed due to COVID-19, CHEM 101 participated in a limited pilot using Akindi, a scantron alternative where instructors can use any standard printer to print bubble sheets and use any standard scanner to scan completed bubble sheets directly into Blackboard. Since then, Sarah and Tara have employed test pools, groups, and adaptive release in their Blackboard courses to promote academic integrity and to administer assessments without the need of a lockdown browser.

What can I say, it’s 2020. I’m writing to announce that Sherri Braxton, Senior Director of Instructional Technology in the Division of Information Technology, has accepted a new position as Senior Director of Digital Innovation at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Her last day at UMBC will be Friday, January 15, 2021. 

Since joining UMBC in 2014, Sherri has made invaluable contributions to DoIT and become a highly-respected member of the campus community. In addition to leading the expansion of DoIT’s instructional technology team from three to ten full-time staff, she and her talented colleagues developed and led the popular PIVOT (Planning Instructional Variety in Online Teaching) initiative in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. With nearly 70 percent of all faculty participating in at least one workshop (and nearly 300 completing the PIVOT Plus certificate), PIVOT has become the single largest instructional technology faculty development initiative in UMBC’s history. Students have praised well-designed PIVOT courses as well. In addition, Sherri has led DoIT’s competency based education and micro-credentialing efforts, including partnering in the popular FinancialSmarts literacy program for UMBC students. 

“Apart from Sherri’s technical expertise and many accomplishments, she is known for her personal and professional commitment to inclusive excellence,” says Jack Suess, Vice President of IT and Chief Information Officer (CIO). “In short, people of all backgrounds, united by excellence, want to work for and with Sherri. She brings energy and quality to everything she does, and quite frankly, it’s contagious. Bowdoin CIO Michael Cato has worked with her to design a new role that is unique in higher education and fits perfectly to her skills. We’ll miss Sherri, but wish her nothing but the best in her new role.”

Beyond her work in DoIT, Sherri has also served on the UMBC Women’s Center advisory board, and was an active member and leader in the USM Academic Transformation Council, helping lead USM initiatives in accessibility, competency based education and open educational resources (OER), designed to help reduce student textbooks costs.

A co-director and faculty of the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership Program, Sherri has also served as co-leader of the EDUCAUSE Instructional Technology Community Group. She served as a task force co-lead for the IMS Global Consortium Open Badge Extensions for Education (OBEE) initiative and continues to serve as a member of IMS Global Open Badges and Comprehensive Learner Record working groups as well as the Adaptive Learning and Digital Credentials Innovation Leadership Networks.

Grading enhancements for journals, test feedback release settings, an updated content editor, and support for HTML content are new features for Ultra courses.

Journals - Instructors can clearly see when students post new journals and comments, and can view a single submission. Instructors can also use Ultra’s grading tools, including feedback and rubrics, to create and post grades. Both participation and submission views link to the gradebook. By default, students will be allowed to delete and edit their journal entries and comments, but instructors can also now choose to disable this permission.

Tests - Instructors can enable more granular controls on when and what type of feedback is given to students when taking an assessment. Set up timed release to automated question feedback, correct answers, and question scores. Select when to show feedback: after submission, after due date, at a specific date, or after the assessment is graded. Students will see if and when feedback will be available for a specific assessment after they submit an attempt.

Ultra test feedback settings

Gradebook - In the Student List View, instructors will receive additional search capabilities, column sorting options, and enhanced page controls for both large and small devices.

Formatting tools - Format content in a variety of different ways, including font colors, font sizes, and font style. A redesigned tool base provides a secondary bar that displays additional options, which is helpful on smaller screens. Students and faculty will see these changes everywhere they encounter the rich text editor in Ultra courses. (available January 7, 2021)

Ultra new content editor

HTML Content Block in Ultra Documents - Instructors can create, edit, and delete custom HTML/CSS code blocks in Ultra course documents. Instructors can select Add HTML when creating a document to add their own HTML and CSS and fully customize the appearance of their Ultra course documents. See example 1 and example 2. NOTE: Use of this feature requires 1) knowledge of HTML to create this type of content and 2) back-end creation on supporting systems, which are in development on UMBC's Blackboard site. We expect this functionality to be available for SP2021.

Finally, a new feature for support will deploy in early January, allowing users to provide critical information to DoIT staff in the event a technical issue must be escalated to Blackboard. Currently, there isn’t an easy way to capture what a user was doing at the time an issue occurred. With this update, users will now be able to capture their most recent session data -- the last 30 actions the taken in Blackboard -- and send it to DoIT staff, which can be used to identify root issues or escalate to Blackboard support. This feature will be available in the Support Panel as well as anywhere the “Oops! Your name is not on the list” message can occur.

Faculty who are interested in test driving new features before they are released to production should open an RT ticket to request early access.

In any online learning experience, it's important for students to be able to engage socially and collaboratively. Interactions with peers and instructors can lead to greater student success. Collaborate introduces two new features to its chat functionality to support increased engagement: chat mentions and formatted messaging.

With the December update, attendees can tag someone in a Collaborate chat when they mention them. Anyone tagged is notified so they don't miss it. Moderators are identified with a MOD label so they are easy to find. Collaborate also features a new text editor in the chat panel. This text editor is simple and features only bold, italics, and underline. One way to use this new formatting option is to highlight a chat announcement in bold to make a message more noticeable in a busy conversation.

Currently, Collaborate can support regular sessions of 250 attendees or supersized sessions up to 500 attendees. In preparation for WT/SP2021, faculty and community leaders can leverage Collaborate to support large scale sessions up to 1,000 attendees.
