<Title>Welcome Dr. Ricky Blissett, Associate Director</Title>

    <div class="html-content">We are thrilled to share that Ricky Blissett ’11 (he/they) has joined the Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff team as associate director. In their role, they develop and coordinate Center programs and initiatives, including holistic evaluation and strategic communication.<br><br>Ricky has served as a faculty member in educational leadership and policy at the University of Georgia, Seton Hall University, and Vanderbilt University; the coordinator for the <em>Just Education Policy</em> Institute; section chair for the Policy and Politics division of the American Educational Research Association; and principal investigator for the Democracy and Equity in Education Politics research group. They have also conducted and published research exploring citizen, activist, and policymaker ideologies in educational justice, democratic and equitable approaches to evaluation and methodology, and student advocacy and power. They received their Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy Studies at Vanderbilt University, and they are an alumnus of UMBC with a B.S. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. During their time as a UMBC student, Ricky was a participant in the first STRiVE leadership for social impact retreat in 2009, coordinator for an education service organization through the Shriver Center, and active member of UMBC’s Student Government Association both as director of academic affairs and executive vice president.<br><br>Outside of their work at UMBC, Ricky volunteers, manages a dog with a lot of opinions about her management, conducts independent research, and collects as many different varieties of mint plants as they can fit in their house.<br><br>Please join us in welcoming Ricky to the Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff team. <Title>Register for the Interact Dialogues Program!</Title>

    <strong>What Is Interact?</strong><div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div>
    <div>INTERACT is a 5-week dialogue program for UMBC students. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Participants meet weekly in small groups for 1.5 hour sessions that are co-facilitated by 2-3 facilitators. Each small group will consist of 10-15 participants. During these sessions, participants learn and practice the necessary skills to become <strong>INCLUSIVE LEADERS</strong> and <strong>ENGAGED COMMUNITY MEMBERS</strong>.</div>

    <span>The Collective Bargaining Bill is just round the corner, and we - the Graduate Student Association (GSA), want to know your stance on the bill. This survey's purpose is to understand how graduate assistants (GAs) at UMBC are currently feeling about their financial situation, including things such as housing, routine expenses, and GA benefits in relation to the current bill that will allow USM GAs the right to unionize. If you are unaware of the Collective Bargaining Bill or need a refresher, please go through this resource pack, especially curated for your reference.</span><br><div><ul>

    <strong>Engage participants in a multicultural development and leadership learning program; </strong><br><strong>Enhance participants' understanding of their social identities, leader identity, as well as their capacity to lead; </strong><br><strong>And enable participants' development through authenticity, self-awareness, relationships, and capitalizing on difference. </strong><br><p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span>The sessions are as follows:</span></p>
    <p><span>- Monday, February 13th, 3 - 4:30pm </span></p>
    <p><span>- Monday, February 27th, 3 - 4:30pm </span></p>

    <p><span>***All sessions will take place in The Commons 2B23 | The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity***<br> </span></p>
    <p><span>Participants will be exploring the concept of Authentic Leadership, Legacy Building, and Breaking Barriers of White Supremacy within Leadership. We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by: </span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;</span></li>
    <li><span>Increasing participants' awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;</span></li>
    <li><span>Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections; </span></li>
    <li><span>And capitalizing on their differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups. </span></li>
    </ul>

    <p><span>The purpose of all MLE programs is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. However, ALL students are welcome to apply!   </span></p>

The Make Your Mark Leadership Scholarship was established in 2021 by the UMBC Student Government Association, and is aimed to recognize the many types of leadership experiences our UMBC undergraduates harbor. </div>

    <div>Scholarship funds will be dispersed Spring 2023. Recipient must be enrolled as an undergraduate student for Spring 2023 in order to receive this scholarship. Selected recipients will be awarded $2,500.</div>
