New Way for Students to Indicate Chosen Name, Pronouns
Dear UMBC Community,
The UMBC Office of Equity and Inclusion is pleased to announce the implementation of a new self-service pathway for students to update their chosen name, pronouns, and gender identity in University systems. Students can now log into their myUMBC profile and update this information. This process is optional and voluntary. Students can also choose to share their identification as a member of the LGBTQ+ community for the purposes of support and outreach. 
Students’ chosen names are already provided to faculty and staff through University systems, such as PeopleSoft and myUMBC. In January 2021, students’ pronoun and gender identity information provided through this process will also be made available in the same way. 
The self-service process builds on prior work enabling students to indicate their chosen name in University systems, and we hope that it makes updating names and pronouns faster and easier for students. More detail on how to update your information is available on the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) website.
OEI is responsible for promoting and coordinating the University’s core values of inclusive excellence and equity. OEI has primary responsibility for managing UMBC’s efforts related to Title IX, gender identity, and LGBTQ+ identity, as well as other civil rights issues. OEI is leading our campus community through this important culture change with the support and partnership of countless allies across UMBC. If you are experiencing discrimination based on your gender identity or sexual orientation, you can report it using OEI’s online reporting form.
The diversity of UMBC’s community and our commitment to inclusive excellence are among our greatest strengths. We are committed to continuing to improve and simplify pathways for alerting the University of chosen names and pronouns. While we recognize that achieving inclusion is an ongoing process, we will continue to strive to make our campus a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, including transgender people and other members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Any graduate students interested in creating, renewing and receiving funding for a Graduate Student Organization must register on this form (make sure you are logged into your UMBC email to access the form) 

All GSOs who want to be eligible for funding must register this year with GSA. We will have updated guidelines soon for conducting GSO events amidst ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and university policies. We also plan to host a GSO training to connect with all GSOs and address any concerns and UMBC policies so we will send out more information about that soon!

Welcome to UMBC! We are so glad you're here, and hope Welcome Week will reinforce that you chose the right place, even in a weird time.  


Each new student will be assigned to a Woolie Group led by one or two Welcome Week Leaders, fondly known as Woolies. Your Woolie Group is your central hub for adjusting to life as a Retriever. This group will serve as your space to:

- Meet other new students

- Connect with student leaders such as your Woolie(s)

- Attend virtual meetings and events

- Access the Welcome Week calendar

- Chat with your group members via your WebEx Team


You will receive an email notification once you are added to a group. Follow the link in that email to head over to myUMBC and start exploring all that your group has to offer! You can also access your group by signing into myUMBC, choosing “Groups” at the top, and looking for your group on the right side of the page.


Your first Woolie Group meeting is Friday, August 21 at 7:30pm via WebEx. Your Woolie(s) will have your full meeting schedule posted in your group.

Welcome to the fall 2020 semester at UMBC! We’re excited to welcome you back even though these extraordinary times create unique challenges for many of us. We want to provide you with information about how to protect yourself, support the health and safety of our campus community, and reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 at UMBC and beyond. We also write to share UMBC’s community expectations during the transition back to campus.

All students who will be attending face-to-face classes and/or living or working on campus this fall are required to complete the Return to Campus COVID Awareness training by August 27, 2020. To access the training, please use the following instructions:

· Log in to your UMBC Blackboard site.

· Select the “Organizations” section located on the left side of your screen.

· Select the training “Return to Campus COVID Awareness.”

· Select Module 1 to begin the training.

· This training does not have to be completed in one sitting; however, you must complete all five training modules.

If you are having any issues accessing the training, please follow the instructions located at this FAQ page to self-enroll in the Return to Campus COVID Awareness.

At the end of module 5, you will be asked to acknowledge and sign the Retriever Community Agreement making a personal commitment to precautions and actions required in order to minimize the potential spread of COVID-19 on our campus and beyond.

If you do not complete the training and sign the Retriever Community Agreement by August 27 you will be required to take classes online and/or live off campus until circumstances allow for a return to campus.

Additional information on all of the requirements for students approved to return to campus, including information on COVID-19 testing options and daily symptom tracking, is available on the Retrievers Return Roadmap site.
