Maintaining Healthy Family Boundaries

Another year of college is coming to a close. An important part of growing and adjusting to college life, has been maintaining healthy relationships and boundaries with your family. In fact, college tends to bring a lot of newfound independence in one's life, and could even be someone's first time living away from home. This independence and transition into adulthood could possibly cause a shift in family dynamics that can be difficult for both you and your family to navigate. Know that if you are struggling with this, you are not alone. The summer serves as a great time to review how your college year went and how you navigated those relationships. Here are some tips to help you develop and maintain a healthy relationship with your family during your time in college and beyond.

Tip #1: Create a Budget:

Money can be a huge stressor for college students and their families. If you know you'll be relying on them for some financial support throughout college, it can be helpful to sort that out in a shared spreadsheet. Even if you aren't financially reliant on your parents, having a clear budget for yourself is still a great way to reduce a lot of uncertainty or stress regarding one's finances and spending. Make sure to be clear about your limits if you're also earning some money for the family, as you might need some savings for food, utilities, etc. Bottom line, make sure all aspects of the budget are clear to everyone in the family and yourself.

Tip #2: Communicate

Have a genuine discussion with your family about what your boundaries may be as you navigate college. Maybe you're living on campus and you know you can't be in contact with your family everyday. So schedule calls with them when both your schedules allow it. Both you and your family being flexible is incredibly important for transitioning and adapting to college life.

Tip 3: Actively Listen

Schedule time to talk to your family, hear out their concerns completely before you think of your own response, and ask questions. When communicating your boundaries, it's crucial to keep a patient and attentive attitude. These conversations are a two way street - your family should also do the same for you as well!

Resources

The move to college life is a huge transition, and it's important to note that students do feel the effects of strained relationships. Not addressing this strain can make the issue worse, lead to past issues coming up again, or even make present circumstances all the more hard to handle. If you are experiencing any challenges within your family, parental, or caregiver relationships, please remember to utilize the plenty of resources available to you at UMBC. They include:

Friends: Express your concerns/worries with a friend you trust.

Clinical Staff Members: Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) has counselors you can talk to. Set up an appointment by calling 410-455-2542.

Good afternoon Pride Center community members!

As another academic year is wrapping up, our staff would like to take a moment to congratulate all of the upcoming graduates. We would also like to provide some end-of-year updates with respect to some of the FAQs that we have received over the past few weeks. Feel free to spread this to your networks.

Pride Center Name Extension

As mentioned in previous messages and our recent social media communications, the deadline for voting on the name extension of The Pride Center is MONDAY 05/22/2022 by NOON. We invite both those within the community, as well as our allies to cast their votes. The name will be unveiled during our Lavender Celebration. Please click here to be redirected to the Name Extension Survey.

Pride Center Adjusted Hours for Finals Week and Summer

Today is the last day that The Pride Center will operate under its regular Spring Hours, closing at 9:30 pm. We will also have special hours tomorrow, Friday 05/19 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Our center will close for the summer starting next week, Monday 05/22/2023, and will remain closed throughout the summer. We expect to reopen on the first day of Fall classes. Please note, that the space will not be reservable for any non-i3b related events, meetings, and/or trainings. Our staff will be available to meet upon request both in person or virtually. If you are curious about all of our spaces, please click here to be redirected to all of our hours.

The 10th Annual Lavender Celebration

Our 10th Annual Lavender Celebration final event for the Spring semester. Please check out the full post here.

Reminders:

You do not need to participate in the Social Media Campaign in order to receive your cords, however, YOU MUST complete the form linked on the myUMBC post in order to receive the cord. Please read the form in its entirety. You may contact our staff if you have any issues with completing the form.

An RSVP is not required to attend the graduation, however, we will grant priority to those who do so. If you are a student, staff, or faculty member who plans on bringing loved ones who are non-UMBC members, please include them in your head count on our RSVP form.

Cord Pickup: If you cannot attend the graduation or would not like to be named at the graduation, there will be pickup times for students on Tuesday, May 23 at The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being (IMPORTANT: We will only account for those who have filled out the form PRIOR to the Lavender graduation).

SafeZone: Our SafeZone LGBTQIA2+ Allyship Development Workshop is back for the first time since our return to campus. Whether you are new to the program or have taken it already, we advise you to take the training as part of a refresher. All of our workshop dates are posted on our myUMBC pages on the following dates. An RSVP is REQUIRED!

We are so excited at the amount of growth in our departmental area within the past year. We will be reaching out to our LGBTQIA2+-centered organizations and close partners in the upcoming weeks to vision what the 2023-2024 year will bring. If you are interested in collaborating with us in any way, please do not hesitate to email me directly or i3b at i3b@umbc.edu. We appreciate your patience and eagerness to support our work! In the meantime, please check out our last Newsletter of the year!
