Senate Vacancy Applications Apply to be the Senator for the UMBC SGA!

Position Description:

Senator:

Attend weekly Senate meetings and abide by the approved attendance policy (Note: You must attend weekly meetings. Senate meetings are weekly on Mondays at 5:30 p.m until the meeting’s conclusion)
Actively make an effort to participate in and promote all SGA-affiliated initiatives and events
Promote and support UMBC undergraduate students by actively working with them and other campus partners to co-create programs, services, and relationships to improve the UMBC community. This includes completing initiative(s) related to the campus community either individually or in partnership with others
Communicate with members of the Executive Branch and encourage collaboration whenever possible
Meet regularly with various UMBC community members (faculty, staff, administrators, and other students) to effectively represent the interests of the student body
Attend all mandatory trainings and in-services
Serve on university shared governance committees
Fulfill all other responsibilities assigned to Senators in SGA’s Guiding Documents
Complete End of term report by May 1, 2023
Submit weekly progress reports to the SGA Stipend Review Committee

504 and Beyond: Disability Politics and the Black Panther Party

Sami Schalk, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Drawing from the book, Black Disability Politics, this talk will detail the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 504 Sit-in, in which protesters around the country picketed and occupied government offices to urge passage of delayed regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Schalk will discuss the sit-in as an historical example of how Black cultural workers have engaged with disability as a political issue in ways that have sometimes been obscured in Black studies and disability studies alike.

Biography: Dr. Sami Schalk (she/her) is an associate professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction (Duke 2018) and Black Disability Politics (Duke 2022). Dr. Schalk’s academic work focuses on race, disability, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She also writes for mainstream outlets, including a monthly column called “Pleasure Practices” in TONE Madison. Dr. Schalk identifies as a fat, Black, queer, disabled femme and a pleasure activist.

This lecture is organized by the Dresher Center for the Humanities.

The deadline to apply for the Spring 2023 MLE Cohort has been extended to Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 and will close at 11:59pm.

The Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE) is a collaboration between Campus Life and Initiatives for Identity Inclusion & Belonging (i3B), that seeks to:

Engage participants in a multicultural development and leadership learning program;
Enhance participants' understanding of their social identities, leader identity, as well as their capacity to lead;
And enable participants' development through authenticity, self-awareness, relationships, and capitalizing on difference.

The sessions are as follows:

- Monday, February 13th, 3 - 4:30pm

- Monday, February 27th, 3 - 4:30pm

- Monday, March 13th, 3 - 4:30pm

- Monday, April 17th, 3 - 4:30pm

- Monday, May 15th, 3 - 5:00pm

***All sessions will take place in The Commons 2B23 | The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity***

Participants will be exploring the concept of Authentic Leadership, Legacy Building, and Breaking Barriers of White Supremacy within Leadership. We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by:

Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;
Increasing participants' awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;
Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections;
And capitalizing on their differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups.

The purpose of all MLE programs is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. However, ALL students are welcome to apply!

What are Writing Accountability Group, or WAGs at UMBC?

What: Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs) are voluntary and facilitated by fellow UMBC graduate students
Who: WAGs are comprised of a group of graduate students (usually 4-8 participants per group) interested in developing writing habits and accountability
Why: Develop habits of writing every day for a short, manageable period of time by setting goals and being accountable to WAG peers
When: WAG groups meet once a week for 60-90 minutes for 10-12 weeks. The group finds a weekly time mutually convenient to all group members.
Where: The group decides on a mutually convenient location to meet, whether in person or online via WebEx or other video conferencing platform
