May is Asian Pacific Islander & Desi American Heritage Month

<Tagline>Celebrating the presence and resilience of this community!</Tagline>

Campus Life's Diversity & Inclusion area would like to recognize all the APIDA individuals that have made a difference at UMBC as well as throughout the nation. We would also like to reflect on the resilience of previous generations who survived despite discrimination, prejudice, and persecution.

The month of May was chosen as APIDA Heritage Month to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843 and to mark the contributions of roughly 15,000 to 20,000 Chinese immigrants to the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.

Jeanie Jew, a former Capitol Hill staffer noticed a lack of recognition given to Asian Pacific Americans during the U.S. Bicentennial celebrations of 1976. Her frustration about this erasure was both personal and painful - her great-grandfather, M.Y. Lee, had helped build the transcontinental railroad after coming to the U.S. from China in the 1800s. He later became a prominent businessman but was later killed for speaking out for other Chinese immigrants who were encountering difficulties in Oregon.

During the late 19th century, violence and anti-Asian bias was reflected in U.S. federal law, such as through The Chinese Exclusion & Geary Acts, as well as in individualized instances of violence.

Understanding this history is important as we see a rise in xenophobia and anti-Asian sentiment. History is the shadow that follows all of us - informing the present even if we don’t see it or don’t believe it is. In order to accurately forecast where we’re going, we must know where we’ve been.

Today, there are approximately 20 million Asian Americans that trace their roots to more than 20 countries, each with their own unique histories, cultures, languages, and norms. While this diverse group is often treated as a monolith, significant differences exist by income, education, religion, etc.

Consider taking the time this month, as well as any time you learn about US history, to delve deeper into understanding how the APIDA community has played a role in shaping this country. Below are highlighted organizations, events, & resources that you can engage with in the spirit of education and celebration of this month.

REPOST: Addressing Asian & Asian American discrimination

<Tagline>In solidarity with our Asian & Asian American community</Tagline>

The staff of Campus Life's Mosaic, Interfaith, and Pride Centers stands in solidarity with and supports our Asian & Asian American students, staff, faculty, and their loved ones. For resources regarding addressing Asian and Asian American discrimination, please refer to the resource page created by the Asian & Asian American Faculty & Staff Council.

    Dear UMBC Community,

We hope you and your families are safe and healthy during these uncertain times. We are inspired by the strong sense of community that UMBC has shown throughout the COVID-19 crisis, despite the physical distance we now maintain to help ensure our safety. We know that the current situation is very difficult for many. We want to offer our unwavering support for each of you and your larger communities as you navigate these challenging times. We encourage you to stay connected, ask for help if you need it, and help others when you can.

Asian and Asian American communities are experiencing an unwarranted rise in discrimination, xenophobia, hate speech, and hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Asian and Asian American communities are a vital part of UMBC and it is essential in these times to affirm our commitment to our shared values of equity and diversity and the premise that UMBC is a safe and accepting community for all our members. Racism, discrimination, and xenophobia are not tolerated in our community, and we will work together to address these challenges within UMBC and beyond. If you feel you have been affected by racism or discrimination, please know that the Office of Equity and Inclusion is available to support you. Access their online reporting form if you would like to make a formal complaint.

We are proud that members of our UMBC community are responding to the rise in anti-Asian racism by offering opportunities for discussion as well as resources. This includes the Asian and Asian American Faculty and Staff Council (AAAFSC) and the Counseling Center. Dr. Tamara Bhalla, chair of AAAFSC, has put together an excellent list of resources and reading materials on anti-Asian discrimination that is available on the COVID-19 website. Interested faculty and staff can learn more about the AAAFSC on the group’s website.

In addition, clinical staff at the Counseling Center, including Dr. Whitney Hobson, Dr. Soonhee Lee, Jen Martinez, M.A., and Ishita Arora, M.A., offer a series of webinars including Coping with Racism and Xenophobia, Women of Color Coping Circle, and International Connections during Travel Restrictions. Resources available on their website include the Counseling Center’s Statement on COVID-19 and Xenophobia written by the Counseling Center Multicultural Committee.

We are grateful for the contributions of these and many more faculty and staff who are deeply engaged in supporting our community. It is more important than ever to be caring and consider the ways in which our thoughts and actions may impact fellow Retrievers and others in the broader community. We share a responsibility for one another now more than ever.

Send Help

<Tagline>Is this real life?</Tagline>

Heidy George is the Program Associate for Student Diversity and Inclusion. When she manages to find spare time, she likes to take dance classes and HGTV her living room.

---

I am very much aware of my privilege. I also know that I have many things to be grateful for. And yet, I’m not going to lie…I am struggling. No, like, really struggling.

Before starting my position at UMBC, I was recuperating from an eleven-month stint as a stay-at-home mom. The experience was simultaneously euphoric and debilitating. For eleven months, I watched in awe: as my baby grew, hit all her milestones and explored the world around her. I held her when she cried, changed what seemed like an impossible amount of diapers and learned how to function without sleep. I am not exaggerating. I no longer know what sleep is. I hear people talk about it and wonder, what is this mystical thing people keep mentioning? It’s as elusive as TikTok.

But I digress.

I read a lot of books before becoming a mom. However, the parenting books did not prepare me for any of this. They failed to mention the horrors of projectile diarrhea when your infant is sick, how your heart skips a beat when they smile at you, or that you may be parenting a toddler during a pandemic.

I had only been working at UMBC for six months before the physical campus was closed. I was really just starting to get the hang of things when we all were informed that we would be working from home.

After going back to work, I remember sitting at my desk and thinking, “I really miss my baby. I wish I could work from home so that I could spend more time with her.” Wait, am I responsible for all of this? I now know that being a mom means you acquire super-powers. Maybe, I need to be more specific the next time I ask the universe for something. Now I am figuring out how to juggle being a working mom and a professional in a brand new Institution - my living room.

In all honesty, I’m not sure how much more of this my body can take. My back hurts from the lack of exercise (don’t you dare tell me I can exercise at home like I don’t have a seventeen month old!). My eyes hurt from all the Webex, Zoom and Google Hangout meetings. I just may need new glasses because I am pretty sure my eyesight is deteriorating more and more each day. On the upside Aldi’s now delivers in my area and my 17-month-old now knows how to open the bathroom door.

Yay, milestones!

When well-meaning work folk ask, “how are you?” I honestly struggle with the answer. Is it professional to say that most of the time I don’t have a solid answer? Is it professional to admit that I don’t know if I brushed my teeth this morning before our 9am call? Is it professional to say that most days I really just want my mommy? Is this blog even professional? What is professional anymore? Have I shared too much?

Going back to work was not easy but somehow not being able to go back to work is even harder.

On the toughest days, I rely heavily on a select group of family, friends and colleagues that make me laugh and are able to hold all of my emotions. Their support helps motivate me to push through the sadness. I guess you could call them my village. I hope you have a village to help support you through whatever this is. If not, we always have room for more.

REPOST: Feel Stressed?

<Tagline>The latest Counseling Center post about managing stress</Tagline>

Check out the information below about the latest Counseling Center post about how to manage stress. For more information, please contact the Counseling Center directly.

--

Stress is a part of everyday life. However, there are certain situations that can cause stress specifically for college students.

The first year of college brings the stress of something new.

For returning students, there could be the stress of taking more challenging classes in their major and finding the perfect internship,

Some students are managing classes and work while being active in one of UMBC’s many campus organizations.

Outside of college life, sources of stress can come from family and world events, such as natural disasters or the political climate.

Right now, COVID-19 has an impact on our everyday life, as well as academics and work.

But not all stress is bad.

A healthy level of stress can serve as a motivator.

Positive stress, called eustress, can help you focus and improve your performance on activities such as tests, playing sports, or interviewing for a job.

Stress can turn into a major problem if it is not managed properly. It can have serious consequences on your school performance, body, and mind.

Difficulty concentrating

Increased worrying

Trouble completing assignments on time

Not going to class

Short temper or increased agitation

So what can we do about stress?

One useful method in managing stress is Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully aware of where you are and what you are doing.

If you have never tried mindfulness, the best way to start is by incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine.

Activities such as walking, eating, or breathing can be done mindfully. Here is a 7-minute mindful practice that can help you to reduce stress.

The Numbers Don't Lie

<Tagline>Sexual Assault Awareness Month</Tagline>

Trigger warning: the following post contains potentially distressing material to survivors of sexual violence.

Women of color experience sexual violence at a disproportionate rate. The fight to eradicate sexual violence must focus on ending ALL forms of oppression. Given the numbers, each one of us has either experienced sexual violence or knows someone who has.

In order to better support survivors we need to:

Believe survivors and become an informed ally. Don’t make marginalized women teach you about their oppression or your role as a bystander.

Do the research and get involved at the legislative level. Use your privilege to center Black and Indigenous women in the discussion and in your advocacy.

Listen to Black and Indigenous women. Support organizations that advocate for survivors, validate their voices and experiences and are led by survivors.

Every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted.

Every. 73. Seconds.

Throughout the country April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. A month, not of celebration but of educating the public, advocating for and raising awareness of the grim experiences lived and survived by many; most of them - already marginalized women. One of the root causes of sexual violence is oppression and it comes in many forms: racism, sexism, ableism, heterosexism, and/or cissexism. The numbers don’t lie. In fact, they are horrific. Indigenous and Black women are at an even more alarming and disproportionate risk of experiencing sexual violence.

According to the National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community:one in four Black girls will be sexually abused before the age of 18. Black girls and women must learn to navigate a world where they are disproportionately likely to survive childhood sexual abuse, rape and human trafficking. All too often, systemic and cultural considerations prevent survivors from reporting these crimes. Native American women are at an even greater risk of sexual violence. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that Native American and Alaska Native women are more than two and a half times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than other women in the USA. Most Native American women living on tribal lands never seek justice against their attackers because they are forced to navigate a complex maze of tribal, state and federal law. If they do report the crime, they are perpetually met with inaction or worst yet indifference.

How do we protect our LGBTQ+, cis, and straight Black and Indigenous girls already vulnerable due to the gendered, intersectional and systemic oppressions they experience from girlhood to womanhood?

We get involved.

The fight to eradicate sexual violence is far from over but we can all do our part to make a difference and support survivors.
