Stop by during exam week and hand pack your own bag for the summer. Come once, twice, or as many times as you need. We want to make sure you’re well taken care of during the break.

 

Are you going to be on campus during the summer for classes? Fear not! Our normal Food Zones will be open and stocked full of bags to be picked up at your convenience.

Recommendations on Sexual Violence/Misconduct Prevention

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We want to share with our community three reports with recommendations on the prevention of and response to sexual violence/misconduct at UMBC. These reports were compiled, respectively, by three groups:
The three reports include assessments of UMBC’s current practices, policies, and resources, as well as recommendations based on effective practices on our campus, evidence-based research, and best practices at other universities.

This summer, the Retriever Courage Implementation Team will review and compile the recommendations from all three reports in preparation for a discussion about priorities with the University Steering Committee (USC) this fall. The Implementation Team and USC will then seek feedback and revisions from all Retriever Courage partners and the university community. After that, they will recommend prioritized action steps to the University Council of Vice Presidents and Deans, who will review and sign off on proposed actions, which will then be submitted to the President for final approval.

We thank our consultant team, the Student Advisory Committee, and the Faculty/Staff Advisory Committee for these reports as we continue to address together how to improve community safety and wellbeing at UMBC.

We also thank the thousands of faculty, staff, and students who have participated in internal and external reviews and training sessions over the past year. Thank you for your commitment to making UMBC a safer and more caring living, learning, and working environment for all, including engagement with Retriever Courage, and for the input and suggestions you are sharing to inform this work. We will continue to provide updates on progress and ways to stay engaged.

We encourage those who have observed or experienced sexual violence/misconduct to seek support as needed at any time. There are many resources available on campus and in the community that offer confidential medical support, confidential psychological/emotional support, and interim protective measures (e.g., no-contact orders, housing adjustments, academic concerns). For emergency situations, contact UMBC police via 410-455-5555 or local police via 911.

Initiative Updates

  • The Breaking the Silence event will be held TOMORROW, Wednesday, May 8th from 5 PM - 6:30 PM at the Sports Zone.

  • Meet the Cops event was enjoyable and was the first step in bridging the gap between students and police.

  • Last week, the Diversity Thinking: A Global Perspective event was held and was a success. How to decide your major and branching out to other disciplines was considered during the event, as well as learning more about interdisciplinary studies.

  • Retriever Essentials made a poll, posted on myUMBC, asking people to join the ambassador board if interested.

  • We are waiting to hear back on updates with Commons Operations about getting more outlet stations.

Ramadan is a month dedicated to fasting, spirituality & worship, and charity & community. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year and follows the lunar calendar. During this month, no food or drink (including water) may be taken from dawn to dusk Worshippers eat a pre dawn light meal, called suhoor. After dusk, Muslims break the fast with an evening meal called iftar.

For the first time in 10 years, Ramadan will run from approximately May 5th - June 4th causing it to fall within the academic school year. This will impact Muslim students, staff, and faculty in various ways. In addition to being aware of this religious observance, here are five ways you can support members of the Muslim community this month.

  • Understand that Ramadan is a time of spiritual cleansing and reflection.
  • Acknowledge Ramadan and Eid by wishing folks well.
  • Be respectful of prayer times - many people are more observant during Ramadan and therefore may need to leave class, meetings, or other obligations to pray for approximately ten minutes.
  • Ramadan includes evening programs that will require folks to be out late - check on your friends to make sure they get home safely!
  • Check on your friends mental health and overall well-being.

We currently have no applications for senators for next year from CNMS (Phys, Chem, Bio, Math/Stats, etc ...).

Overall, we have 15 applications. Of these, 12 are from COIET and 3 are from CAHSS. We were late to the game this year, so we expected difficulty getting all colleges represented, but--as it stands--we will have no representation from CNMS next year.

While we aimed for the deadline for application submission to be May 1, it's clear that we should extend the window. If you're in CAHSS or CNMS, please encourage your peers to apply to be a graduate senator.

The GSA is seeking applications for senators who will serve throughout the next academic year. Such senators would have the following general responsibilities as they represent either their college or the general interests of all graduate students at UMBC:

1) Attend monthly meetings of the Graduate Senate between August 2019 and May 2020.
