Reach Together Tutoring Program is hiring! This program partners UMBC students with Baltimore City and Baltimore County Public Schools to provide math tutoring to students during the school day. UMBC students are hired as math coaches (tutors) to work with students in 2nd through 8th grade. 

Things to note: 

-coaches do not need to have a strong foundation in higher level math, we work with students who are in 2nd through 8th grade and typically 2 or more grade levels behind
-all curriculum and resources are provided 
-we provide ongoing professional development to help coaches navigate working with students 
-transportation is often arranged for coaches to get from campus to the school site
-the weekly commitment can be as little as 3 hours but some coaches may have as many as 15 to 20 hours

This summer, Imagining America is accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students for two fellowships:

The Publicly Active Graduate Education (PAGE) Fellows Program, a network for publicly engaged graduate students in the humanities, art, and design, invites applications from grad students with a demonstrated interest and commitment in public scholarship and/or artistic practice, who are currently enrolled at Imagining America member institutions. Applications are due by midnight on Friday, May 31.

The Joy of Giving Something (JGS) Fellowship awards scholarships and opportunities with the aim of elevating photography and digital media as pathways for undergraduate students to pursue their careers and make a difference in their communities. Join the UMGC community for a fascinating conversation and moderated Q&A session with Grace Young, who is on a mission to save America's most iconic Chinese communities.

 

Growing up in San Francisco, Young spent many happy hours in that city's Chinatown, where the small neighborhood atmosphere and cultural richness helped to inspire her career as a celebrity culinary guru. In recent years, however, Chinatowns in many cities have struggled to survive and the economic realities of the pandemic have caused many businesses to close and populations to plummet.

 

That's why Young has added another title to her already impressive resume: "the accidental voice for Chinatown." Partnering with a broad range of food industry, educational, and media organizations, she is fostering support and positive exposure for Chinatowns throughout the country by focusing on how they came to be, their impact on the community, and the challenges of preserving them


About the Speaker

Grace Young is a multi-award-winning cookbook author, culinary historian, and filmmaker. Among her many accolades, she has received the Julia Child Award and the James Beard Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year Award, and was also a USA Today Women of the Year honoree. Often called the "poet laureate of the wok," Young has devoted much of her career to demystifying and preserving the traditions of the ancient iron cooking utensil for use in contemporary kitchens.
