For the Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being
Graduate Assistantship Announcement
Division of Student Affairs
Research Assistantship: Graduate assistantship (Master’s or PhD level) will be available starting as early as July 1, 2025 (dependent on student availability) to work with Student Belonging & the Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being in the Division of Student Affairs at UMBC. With the support of the Director of the Center for Religion, Spirituality, & Pluralism who oversees the Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being, the Graduate Assistant will help design systems to collect and interpret data, co-manage marketing and social media, provide logistical support for the Center, and help supervise student interns.
As one of the identity-based centers within Student Belonging, The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being serves as a spiritually-centered space where students and UMBC community members can gather at the intersection of religion, faith, spirituality, and other lived experiences. The Gathering Space prioritizes individual religious practice, opportunities to explore holistic well-being connected to religion and spirituality, and creating spaces to engage across differences, by centering the importance of interfaith work and dialogue. Within the Gathering Space, three core themes are emphasized: radical love & belonging, spiritual well-being, and energetic pluralism.
The duties of the assistantship will fall into the following areas:
- Data Collection & Assessment: The GA will co-lead Gathering Space assessment efforts within the center, including the design of pre- and post-assessment measures, data analysis, and outcome sharing with the Division of Student Affairs, the UMBC campus broadly, and community stakeholders.
- Co-Manage Marketing & Social Media: The GA will design and implement varied systems to help manage usage and student engagement with The Gathering Space, which hosts 350+ visitors per week. These systems will help communicate upcoming events and programs as well as create a narrative to share about the role of religious and spiritual life at UMBC.
- Logistical Support: The GA will provide logistical support for some center events, intern hiring, and space management, seeking to be a welcoming and positive presence in the space.
- Co-Management of Student Staff: The GA will help manage the student intern team by providing direct supervision, attend weekly operations meetings, and facilitate trainings and practice opportunities for student staff to develop skills connected to interfaith dialogue, leadership development, customer service and space management, and/or program facilitation.
Potential Opportunities:

- Deepening skills connected to interfaith work, dialogue, and engaging across difference
Required Qualifications:
- Experience with interfaith dialogue and/or work with religious diversity
- Experience with data collection and assessment
- Experience with marketing and social media/online communications
- Previous experience in creating and implementing programming for students, preferably in higher education; supervision of student interns and programmatic design
- Interest and passion for equity, inclusion and diversity efforts, preferably experience in a higher education context (student organizations, student government, volunteering, internships, etc)
- Required skills: detail-oriented; self-managed; reliable; creative problem solver; critical thinker
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong systems thinker, particularly around data collection and assessment
- Experience with marketing and social media and ability to connect a marketing/social media plan back to systems and data collection/assessment
- Proven commitment to supporting equity, inclusion, and diversity efforts within higher education
- Professional interest in working in higher education administration or spiritual/religious life

Black and Latine/x students have made invaluable contributions to the wider UMBC community. During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.
Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.
Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m.
Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.

This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia.
During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.
Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.

Sign-Up to Volunteer for the Affinity Celebration & Awards!
Want to help? Here's how!
This form is the correct place to sign up to help with ANY of the 3 Celebration & Awards:Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards, taking place May 15th in the UC Ballroom from 5:30-8pm
Lavender Celebration & Awards, taking place May 19th in Commons Skylight from 5:30-8pm
Black & Latine/x Celebration & Awards, taking place May 20th in Commons Skylight from 5:30-8pm
We are seeking help with the following volunteer shifts and tasks for all events:
Set-up from 4-5:30pm: Set up of the space, including decorations, tables, tech, check-in tables, etc. We will also be seeking assistance with balloons, but understand they're very polarizing, so that will be a separate opt-in!
Check-in & Greeters from 5:30-6:15pm: Checking in students who are being recognized during the celebration, greeting guests as they arrive, answering questions, directing to restrooms, fireside, etc.
Clean up from 7:30-8:30pm (approx): Clean-up of the space and return of items to the Mosaic
Please feel free to sign up to assist with as many events or as many shifts as you are interested and available to help with. We will send out a final volunteer shift schedule via email. If you have any questions please contact Darcie Adams at

1. Engagement (Engagement is defined as experiences that are demonstrated by how UMBC community members think, feel, and act, as well as how they feel about UMBC’s environment and policies, which influence how they feel towards UMBC.)

4. Sense of Belonging
5. Health & Well-Being (Well-being is defined as having both individual and community components that include but are not limited to physical health, mental health, wellness, learning/work/living environments, and overall campus climate.)
6. Workplace Climate
Who is behind the survey?
A team of UMBC students, faculty, and staff is working with Rankin Climate, an organization with 25 years of climate assessment experience at over 300 campuses on this project.
Will anyone be able to identify my responses? Confidentiality is vital to the success of the survey. Rankin Climate has taken multiple precautionary measure to ensure anonymity. For more information go to the project website.
If you complete the survey, you will have the opportunity to enter a random drawing to receive one of the following as a way of saying “thank you” for taking the time to participate in the survey:
• Retriever dollars ($25.00 per award)
• Flex dollars ($25.00 per award)
To ensure confidentiality, raffle prizes and incentive processes happen separate from the survey itself
