Hey all,
Sorry for the lack of communication surrounding our last meeting. For those who couldn't make it on such short notice, here is a summary of what we discussed.
Officer Nominations
Even though it feels like the semester just began, it is time to start looking forward to next year. Every year we must elect a new set of officers to lead the club. Undergrads from any year can serve in any of the officer positions, so don't feel shy about nominating yourself!
If you know someone you think would be a good fit for club leadership, you can nominate them here. Nominees must be undergraduates.
The officer positions in the Outdoor Recreation Club are:
President
- Overseeing all committees
- Developing and managing events/projects
- Serving as the ORC's official representative for communicating with SGA and UMBC staff
Vice President
- Developing and managing events/projects
Treasurer
- Managing fundraising
- Developing and managing events/projects
- Managing the organization's funds and ensuring compliance with all financial rules and guidelines
Secretary
- Managing member recruitment/retention
- Managing communication within the group
- Managing public relations
- Developing and managing events/projects
(These positions come from the Outdoor Recreation Club Constitution, but the duties of these positions are flexible).
Potential March Backpacking Campout
For the next club outing, we are planning on going to Assateague Island for a beach hike/campout. For those who aren't familiar, Assateague Island is a long, horse-inhabited barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia.
We haven't done a lot of camping as a club, much less backpacking, so I would like to get a feel for how many people would be interested in going.
This campout would be from Saturday March 25th to Sunday March 26th.
Backpacking on Assateague would entail about a 5 mile hike out to the site (in the sand it will feel like 10), camping for a night, then a 5 mile hike back. Bear in mind that in mid-late March the beach can be cold and windy (which helps avoid the mosquitos and horseflies!). Additionally, the island does not have running water, so we would need to carry in any water we plan to use, adding weight. More information can be found here.
