Internships with the USAID Africa Bureau

<Tagline>Apply by January 31st</Tagline>

USAID’s Africa Bureau expects to have a limited number of Summer 2013
internships available in a few of our overseas missions in sub-Saharan
Africa as well as in Washington, D.C. This is an excellent opportunity
for outstanding students interested in pursuing careers in international
development.

In sub-Saharan Africa, USAID works to help build sustained and
well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce
widespread poverty, and conduct themselves responsibly in the
international system. Our assistance to Africa aims to help African
governments, institutions, and organizations advance good governance
principles and innovative approaches to health, education, economic
growth, agriculture, and the environment.

Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to USAID’s work in
Africa while learning valuable lessons about international development
and working closely with our staff members. The work assigned to an
intern in most office divisions includes research, writing program
memoranda, drafting documents, facilitating meetings and special events,
attending program discussions in the Agency and at the Department of
State, and communicating on program issues for USAID field Missions
abroad.

All internship offers are contingent upon successful receipt
of a security clearance. As soon as a candidate is tentatively selected,
the Africa Bureau will work with the candidate to initiate the security
clearance investigation process by obtaining and submitting the
necessary documentation to the Office of Security. Additional
documentation may be required, and internship offers are considered
final only after the Office of Security completes its process and issues
a security clearance. Please note that these steps require considerable
processing time, and candidates should not make travel or other
arrangements until the Africa Bureau confirms that the security
clearance process is complete.

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to
gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This
hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young
leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and
prepare them for future public service opportunities.

The White House Internship Program’s mission is to make the “People’s
House” accessible to future leaders from around the nation.

This select group of young men and women from across the country
dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White
House, the community, and the nation. These committed citizens become a
part of the White House team. The assignments given to an intern on any
given day could include conducting research, managing incoming
inquiries, attending meetings, writing memos, and staffing events.

While the interns’ responsibilities and tasks vary by department, all
interns are united through weekly events including a weekly speaker
series with senior staff members and small group meetings exploring
different policy aspects of the Executive Office of the President
through speakers, discussion and off-site field trips. Most importantly,
the internship experience includes an emphasis on service and interns
participate in regularly scheduled service projects at schools and
non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C.

volunteers on Sunday, January 27, 2013, from 11:00am to 2:00pm, on the
Zoo’s Mansion House Porch.

Last year, over 940 volunteers gave 34,272 hours of support in a wide
variety of important activities. Volunteers are needed to engage guests
in fun, educational interactions on grounds and in the community; to
help our Horticulture Department to maintain plantings around the Zoo,
supervising animal interactions at the KidZone (goat yard) and camel
rides, supporting office personnel with administrative projects, leading
crafts and games at special events, and much more. The Zoo offers
volunteer positions for people with all types of schedules and
interests, and we are hoping to add approximately 120 new volunteers
this year.

During the Open House, there will be information sessions at 11:30,
12:30 and 1:30 where guests will learn about the essential role
volunteers play in conservation education, grounds keeping, and visitor
support. Current volunteers and staff will be on hand to discuss spring
openings, including training, scheduling, and the rewards of
volunteering. We will also have representatives on hand to discuss
college internships, and the Junior Zoo Crew, our unique
service-learning program for teens ages 14-17.

We
invite participation by research advisors, undergraduates interested in
postbaccalaureate, Ph.D, or M.D./Ph.D. studies, and graduate students
pursuing postdoctoral training
in the STEM disciplines. We are also particularly interested in
identifying students from underrepresented groups who are not currently
in an organized program such as MARC, REU, RISE, or PREP and who might
therefore benefit the most from this conference.

All
student participants will be expected to present a platform talk or a
poster on their research. If faculty wish to attend along with their
student(s), please let us know
and we will inform you when your students have been accepted.

COSTS

accommodations are available at the Emory Conference Center (www.emoryconferencecenter.com/)at $129 plus tax per night, double occupancy. Additional rooms MAY be available at the adjacent Emory Inn (https://bookings.ihotelier.com/Emory-Inn/bookings.jsp?hotelId=75977)
