Attn Rising Seniors: New Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers!

* Nearly half of the nation’s students (44 percent) are students of color, but the latest data show that just one of every six teachers (16.7 percent) is a teacher of color.
* Current trends indicate that, by 2020, the percentage of teachers of color will fall to an all-time low of 5 percent of the total teacher force, while the percentage of students of color in the system will likely exceed 50 percent.
* In urban and rural schools nationwide, as many of half of all African-American, Latino, and Native American students do not graduate high school in four years.
* As many as a third of students in the nation’s high-need schools have at least one or more teachers without even a minor in the subject she or he teaches.
* Study after study shows that the single most effective way a school can improve students’ academic achievement is to consistently provide well-prepared, committed teachers.
* Research also shows, overwhelmingly, that students of color perform better – academically, personally, and socially-when taught by teachers from their own ethnic groups.

UMBC just became recognized as a Woodrow Wilson Rockefeller Brothers Fund (WW-RBF) Nominating Institution. The WW-RBF Award covers:

- $30,000 stipend to apply toward the cost of a master's degree
- preparation in a high-need public school
- guidance toward teaching certification
- support and mentoring throughout the three-year teaching commitment
- lifelong membership in a national network of Woodrow Wilson Fellows who are intellectual leaders

Eligibility for the WW-RBF Teaching Fellowships:
The Fellowship program seeks to expand the pool of outstanding candidates
to teaching in urban and rural schools by recruiting exceptionally able
arts and sciences majors for whom teaching is a new career option.
Eligible applicants include individuals of color in their senior year of
undergraduate preparation at one of the nominating colleges or
universities. The Fellowship supports their enrollment in a graduate
program that leads to a master's degree and initial certification in the
subject they will teach.

Applications are accepted only from candidates nominated by one of the
nominating institutions. To be nominated, interested candidates should
consult UMBC's campus liaison, Dr. Sarah Shin, Professor, Department of
Education. She can be reached at shin@umbc.edu or at (410) 455-2485. Up to
2 students from UMBC will be nominated to the Foundation (Nomination and
Application deadline: October 15, 2010). For more information please visit
the Woodrow Wilson Foundation website at:

Paid Sales & Marketing Internships Available...

Full Title: Paid Sales & Marketing Internships Available w/University Directories

University Directories is hiring motivated students to participate in their nationally recognized sales and marketing internship program this summer. It is a paid position throughout the summer. We have positions at UMBC as well as locations throughout 44 of 50 states (you can check our website for a complete list - www.universitydirectories.com/internships.html).

There are three main things to know about the internship:
1) Nationally Recognized week long expense-paid training in May in Chapel Hill, NC to provide a solid foundation for your summer.
2) It is a paid internship.
3) It's not a desk job - you're going to be working face to face with local business owners to talk to them about advertising in the publication that we print at your school.

Our internship is a fast-paced sales and marketing program designed to give students experience in analyzing how local businesses operate and how they try to target their advertising to reach the campus, more specifically, YOU as a college student.

Interviews
If you are interested in the opportunity, you can email me back your resume to staylor@vilcom.com and we can set up a time to talk further about the internship! I will be conducting 30 minute phone interviews this week and have limited availability left, so please email me with your resume if you are interested as spots are filled on a first come first serve basis based on eligibility.

Have you found an internship, co-op, or research position, but just don't know how to get it listed on your transcript or get credit for it this summer? Do you want a notation on your transcript for all your hard work, but are unsure how to proceed?

Well look no further! The staff at the UMBC Shriver Center is here to help!

If you found an internship, co-op, or research position on your own for the summer already, you can get the notation on your transcript (FREE OF CHARGE) - and be on your way to possibly receiving credit- its not too late.

TO ADD INTERNSHIP/CO-OP/RESEARCH TO YOUR TRANSCRIPT:
1. Either call (410-455-2493) or stop by the Shriver Center on the ground floor of the Public Policy Building to make an appointment with a Coordinator.
2. Get a letter/memo from your employer (on company letterhead) verifying that you are interning at least 8-10 hours per week and bring it to your appointment.
3. Meet with your Coordinator to get enrolled in the Practicum (to have your internship/research noted on your transcript as a university sanctioned experience) and have your potential credit options explained to you.
4. Enjoy your internship, co-op, or research position this summer!

If you DO NOT have an internship lined up but are interested in obtaining one, we’ll be glad to help you with that as well. To begin the process of finding an internship through the Shriver Center and UMBCworks, visit http://shrivercenter.umbc.edu/student_howdoigetstarted.html
That link will detail exactly what you need to do.

The Shriver Center (1st fl Public Policy) is OPEN from 8:30 am to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, so stop in or make your appointment soon!

Questions e-mail shrivercenter@umbc.edu> or call 410-455-2493
