Last Chance to Register Before It Fills!

Registration is filling fast amongst the State of Maryland! We want to make sure that UMBC students have the chance to sign up!

On Saturday, April 10th, the 3rd Annual Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Conference will be held at Towson University. This exciting event originated at UMBC in April 2008, then moved to the University of Baltimore in April 2009, and Johns Hopkins University plans to host it in spring 2011. Such a collaboration of colleges and universities through the Baltimore Collegetown Network and the Maryland Campus Compact will result in great opportunities to network amongst other college students, staff, and faculty throughout Maryland through workshops, the Community Partner Fair, and lunch through topical discussions.

The Service-Learning Program at The Shriver Center at UMBC continues to serve on the planning committee after recognizing the resource that the UMBC community can provide, as well as learn from other peers in the capacity of service-learning and civic engagement. This year's theme "Planting Seeds of Service: Cultivating Civic Engagement" will engage the greatest number of participants (300+) and workshops (32) since its inception in 2008. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings will be the Keynote Speaker.

UMBC is represented in several ways:

    - Yasmin Karimian and David Hoffman present "Re-Visioning Student Governments as Creators of Civic Agency Platforms"

    - Ben Davis, Nathan Rehr, and Benjamin Hong present "Alternative Spring Break: Awareness Games Reflection"

    - Jennifer Arndt Robinson and Joby Taylor present "Ethical Reflection for Seasoned Service Learners"

    - Joby Taylor presents "Peace Follows Service: Service-Learning as a Path For Building a Culture of Peace in Baltimore"

There has been such a strong response from UMBC students, that we have decided to pay for ALL of UMBC students participating. Transportation will also be provided by Shriver Center staff. To register, go to www.towson.edu/plantingseeds

Full Title: McCarl Dental Group seeks interns- marketing research, database development, etc

As an intern at McCarl Dental Group, a student would be able to select from a wide range of projects. Someone interested in technology would be able to assist with development of an email communication system using MacPractice Dental software and Google. A business or marketing major could help refine our tracking system and establish a plan for the overall marketing program with a budget proposal helping define resource allocation for marketing projects. The balance of traditional and cutting edge marketing concepts is fascinating and a student interested in social media marketing could have hands on experience in helping develop and evaluate these programs while comparing them to results from our traditional print ad campaign.

McCarl Dental Group is a third Generation Dental practice serving over 10,000 patients with offices in Greenbelt and Millersville Maryland. We have a wonderful history of quality dental care and the highest professional standards. Drs. Clayton and Jay McCarl are fellows in the Academy of General Dentistry and Dr. Clayton McCarl serves on the Dean’s faculty teaching ethics to dental students at the University of Maryland Dental School. Several members of the McCarl Dental
staff provide volunteer dental services at the Stanton Center Dental Clinic in Annapolis, Maryland.

Here is a summary of a few of the ongoing projects at our dental office.
