The Samson, Rosetta A., and Saddie Feldman Award   $700

This scholarship is awarded to students who have completed their junior year of studies and have demonstrated, through community service and academic activities, an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship.

The Samson, Rossetta A. and Sadie B. Feldman Family Award for Citizenship was established in January 1996 by Sadie B. Feldman in memory of her family.


1. Please describe your understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship as demonstrated through community service and academic activity.

2. Discuss why your service organization is important to the population it serves. Thinking back on your service-learning and community engagement experience, did the organization address a symptom or a root cause of an issue impacting the population served? Explain.  

3. How has your service-learning experience(s) impacted your continued involvement at UMBC and engagement in the broader community?  


Samuel I. Rosenberg Fund Award   $900
This annual award will recognize a student at UMBC who has completed an outstanding apprenticeship within the citizenship and public policy initiative.

Established in April 1995 by Samuel I. Rosenberg, this award is given to a UMBC student (any year) who has completed a public service-focused internship, with either a nonprofit or government organization, directly addressing a social challenge.

1. Reflecting on your public service-focused experience(s), did you take risks or play it safe? Were you challenged? Explain.

2. Discuss an issue your placement organization addressed. What do you think is a possible solution for the issue?

The Dresher Center for the Humanities, in conjunction with the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and the Vice President for Research, invites applications for Dresher Center Summer Fellowships. Proposals are welcome from all full-time, tenured or tenure-track UMBC faculty as well as full-time professors of the practice pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Fellows will receive support for summer research and the completion of a book manuscript, a major article, or a project of similar stature. Funding may also be used for assistance in developing extramural funding applications, including grant and fellowship applications, and book proposals.

Applications will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board. Fellows (individuals or groups) will receive $6,000 per award. Between one and three fellowships will be awarded.

Please join Karl Steiner, UMBC's Vice President for Research, for a virtual lunch series to discuss UMBC’s Research and Creative Achievements (RCA).  All questions and RCA topics are welcome, but we anticipate that some of the dialog will address individual challenges faced in conducting RCA activities during the pandemic. 

All members of our UMBC community are invited to join in on these recurring virtual lunches that are scheduled from 12:00 to 1:00 pm on alternating Fridays via this Webex link on February 5 & 19; March 5 & 19; April 2, 16 & 30; and May 14.

Courses in statistics, data analysis, & quantitative methods

Over 100 scholarships available!

The ICPSR Summer Program offers over 100 scholarships to students from many different fields of social science research. These scholarships enable students to take our courses in statistics, data analysis, and quantitative methods.

These scholarships provide fee waivers to attend our four-week sessions. The first session begins June 21 and ends July 16, and the second begins on July 19 and ends August 13. Courses will be fully online again this summer, allowing participants to learn from anywhere in the world. Lectures are recorded; there is no need to stay up until all hours of the night (unless you really want to).

Courses include introductory and advanced regression analysis, time series analysis, Bayesian analysis, machine learning, rational choice theory, SEM, MLE, game theory, longitudinal analysis, multilevel modeling, social choice theory, race/ethnicity and quantitative methodology, data visualization, data science and text analysis, and more.We also offer scholarship in partnership with various organizations:
  • EITM Certification Scholarships cover the registration fee for one or both four-week sessions of the ICPSR Summer Program. For application information and eligibility criteria, check the EITM website.
  • Janet Box-Steffensmeier and John A. Garcia Scholarships are awarded by the Society for Political Methodology to encourage women and underrepresented graduate students in political science to attend the ICPSR Summer Program. These awards are a waiver of registration fees to attend one or both four-week sessions.
  • ISR-Rackham Summer Training Awards provide funds to support doctoral students from the University of Michigan (across all Rackham Divisions) who would like to take courses with the ICPSR Summer Program or SRC Summer Institute.
  • The Hanes Walton, Jr. Award for Quantitative Methods Training is awarded by the National Conference of Black Political Scientists and provides a waiver of registration fees for one or both of the four-week sessions. The Hanes Walton, Jr. Award is intended to encourage attendance in the ICPSR Summer Program by faculty and graduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as women and minority graduate students and faculty at other institutions.

Learn about the 2022-23 Fulbright Scholar Program and other exciting Fulbright opportunities at this workshop for CAHSS faculty, presented by the Institute of International Education (IIE), which develops and implements the Fulbright program. IIE program officers will provide information on the upcoming competition cycle that starts in February 2021, and on the Catalog of Awards. The presenters will share tips for preparing strong Fulbright applications, initiating outreach to international host institutions, and doing short- and long-term planning.
 
Time will be given for Q&A. Please add your question in the registration form.

The National Day of Racial Healing is on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021. This annual observance was first introduced by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation on January 17th, 2017 and has been celebrated every year since. The goal of the day is to promote racial healing and equity through collective action. As a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Center, we are honoring the day by welcoming you to join our letter writing campaign regarding the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Congressional Resolution, also known as S. Con. Res. 50.  Introduced by Senator Cory Booker, this concurrent resolution calls for the establishment of a United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT). 

Through our letter writing campaign, we encourage you to voice your thoughts on the TRHT resolution by writing letters to your senators. During the first hour of the event, you will have the chance to learn more about the resolution as well as the TRHT work that is happening on campus and in the surrounding community. The last 30 minutes will be an optional space for you to work through the thoughts and experiences that you would like to include in your letter with the facilitators.

Please save the date for a workshop on UMBC's grants process to be held on Friday, February 19, 2021, from 12:00PM-1:00PM (online).

This workshop is for faculty at all career stages who are or will be seeking external funding for arts or humanities research and scholarly projects. Participants will learn about the process and requirements for preparing and submitting external funding applications at UMBC. 

Topics will include:
  • Proposal Planning and Development (Rachel Brubaker, Dresher Center, and Lynn Cazabon, CIRCA) 
  • Routing Grant and Fellowship Applications and Role of the Dean's Office (Preminda Jacob, Associate Dean for Research, CAHSS)
  • Kuali Proposal Routing and Compliance Matters (Rebecca O'Brien, Grants and Contracts Manager, Office of Sponsored Programs/OVPR)
Time will be provided for Q & A.
