Faculty Working Groups for Fall 2020

The Dresher Center for the Humanities welcomes one new Faculty Working Groups for 2020 - 2021: Latin American Feminisms (see description below)

All Faculty Working Groups are accepting new members. To join a group, contact its leader(s) to find out about upcoming activities.

Digital Storytelling

Leaders: Bill Shewbridge (Media and Communication Studies) and Bev Bickel (Language, Literacy, and Culture Program)

This group explores the research focus of digital storytelling including discussions of digital literacies and competencies in the humanities and social sciences, narrative and storytelling research, and classroom work across disciplines. The working group serves as a steering body for ongoing digital storytelling activities and connects with other campus work that involves storytelling for civic agency and engagement. The group promotes opportunities for faculty involved in digital storytelling research to share their experiences through presentations, workshops, roundtables and a possible one-day conference.

Disability Studies

Leaders: Drew Holladay (English) and Sharon Tran (English)

This group will focus on reading interdisciplinary scholarship in disability studies (DS) and its application in higher education and other contexts. They will read and discuss DS and DS-related theories of embodiment, epistemology, methodology, subaltern politics, and cultural analysis. Applications of DS include programs of inclusion, universal design, and accessibility in education and elsewhere (such as accessibility in technology and digital spaces). Group conversations will include how faculty can use DS scholarship in their classes and to redesign their own teaching practices.

Immigration

Leaders: Sara Poggio (Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communications), T. H. (Tim) Gindling (Economics), and Felipe Filomeno (Political Science and Global Studies)

The Immigration faculty working group brings together faculty members and graduate students who study international migration. Its purpose is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching, research, and service related to international migration at UMBC. International migration is a complex phenomenon, with cultural, economic and political aspects. Its causes, processes and consequences have been analyzed in multiple disciplines, from a variety of theoretical perspectives and with different research methods. UMBC currently has several faculty members and graduate students whose work on immigration reflects this diversity of approaches. However, for the most part, this work has been carried out independently, by individual faculty members and graduate students within their home departments. There is an untapped potential for interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching, research and service related to this broad theme.

*NEW* Latin American Feminisms

Leaders: María Célleri (Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies), Tania Lizarazo (Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communications and Global Studies), Yolanda Valencia (Geography and Environmental Systems), and Thania Muñoz D. (Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication)

The Latin American Feminisms Working Group is an interdisciplinary multilingual research group that focuses on feminist and decolonial Latin American and Caribbean scholarship from a hemispheric perspective. Attentive to the inequitable politics of translation between South America and North America, the group centers scholarship from and for Latin America and the Caribbean. In particular, it considers the formation of Latin American and Caribbean feminisms from a decolonial and intersectional framework that honors the work of Indigenous, Black, and Brown women. We bring together faculty, graduate students, artists, and community members from the humanities and social sciences to engage in and debate issues around race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, mobility, feminism and decoloniality as these pertain to the Latin American and Caribbean hemisphere, which begins in the Southern Cone and extends to the Latinx/Chicanx diaspora. We read and discuss recent work around Latin American and Caribbean studies, invite scholars from Latin America to speak about their work, as well as collaborate to support our work and move our research projects forward.

Sound Studies

Leader: Earl Brooks (English)

Over the past decade, sound studies has been generating a buzz in disciplines across the humanities. The dual purpose of this group is to: 1) facilitate more cross-disciplinary discussions about sound, and 2) bring together faculty members with shared interests to encourage collaboration. The group discusses relevant sound studies issues from different disciplinary perspectives, has informal presentations of their own in-process work, and listens to invited talks from guest speakers.

Start of Semester Student Technology Help Sessions

<Tagline>Make sure you're prepared to learn online!</Tagline>

As recently announced, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) strongly recommends that all students check they have the necessary technology setup to be successful as online learners. To help, DoIT is hosting 12 Sprint sessions for 10-minute, virtual walk-in consults or pop-up support groups on key topics including the following:

Getting Online (required of all UMBC students)*

Getting A Computer (required of all UMBC students)*

Checking Your Blackboard Collaborate Audio Connection (essential)

Using UMBC’s Virtual Computing Lab (recommended)

Using myUMBC Groups & Webex Teams for Student Clubs & Organizations (8/26, 8/30, 9/2 and 9/9 only).

The sprints will occur across four weeks starting Tues., 8/8 and ending Wed., 9/9 (click here for specific dates & times).

About Today's Sprint

The sprint will take place in a Blackboard Collaborate virtual conference room. Use the following link up to 15 minutes before the start time:

tinyurl.com/umbcdoit-studenthelp

Due to the short format, these virtual support sessions are designed for quick consults, not deep dives or customized training sessions. Also, you will likely be in a virtual room with several people who also are interested in the same topic, and being helped by a DoIT support staff member. Often, you can learn by listening to this Q&A, but if you want a personalized consult, please use my.umbc.edu/help to open a Request Tracker (RT) ticket.

While you can just “show up,” advance registration -- by indicating you are “Going” to this myUMBC event -- is appreciated and can help DoIT gauge how many support staff are needed in each breakout room.

Prior to the session

If this is your first time joining one of our live sessions, please review the Getting Started Guide. You will also find additional helpful information for using Blackboard Collaborate at our extensive FAQs.

For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome or a recent browser update. Closing any unnecessary browser tabs will help conserve your bandwidth. After joining the session, please configure your audio.

* Note: As announced to all incoming students on 7/23/20, since UMBC requires all students to have a computer and Internet access, these are now officially factored into UMBC’s “Cost of Attendance" and thus, can be funded through financial aid.
COURSE SPOTLIGHT: GLBL 409 I'm a Cyborg but That's OK

<Tagline>Need an Upper Lvl. GLBL Elective Next Semester? Spaces Open!</Tagline>

Still have space in your schedule and looking for a course that will move you closer to graduation? Why not take GLBL 409: I'm a Cyborg but That's OK? This course takes on important current issues of identity and technology in an increasingly digitised world.

GLBL 409 is combined with MLL 490 This class titled "I'm a Cyborg but That's OK" after Park Chan-Wook's film, will explore the figure of the cyborg to interrogate the ways in which cultural identity is constructed through global media and the role of technology indefining humanness in an increasingly digital world. We will look at the processes of globalization, and the connections between local and global contexts of struggle that inform lived experiences of identity, including race, gender, sexuality, class and ability. Included texts will open up discussions about the role of technology in shaping capitalism, imperialism and violence as well as individual and collective practices of self-representation, resistance, self-determination and solidarity within a global context. This course will be organized in three simultaneous tracks: reading, viewing and production.

From Dr. Lizarazo on her teaching approach for this course:
My teaching is a collaborative and interactive experience, rooted in feminist pedagogy and enhanced by technology; it exemplifies a commitment to intellectual debate and an openness to exploring different forms of knowledge production both inside and outside the classroom. As we have entered a historical collective experience that has transformed education, and will change higher education in profound ways, we need to use the tools we have to ensure that UMBC’s commitment to civic engagement is maintained through our classes and teaching pedagogy. In particular, I am committed to replicate the community-building experience of in-person classes with tools that I have previously used in my classes. We’ll continue creating E-Portfolios using Google Sites with assignments that mix collaboration, creativity, and technology. Assignments will be shared with the class to practice public writing and imagine knowledge production as a holistic process beyond the university. We will also think beyond writing as the center of knowledge production and use VoiceThread, Adobe Spark Video, among other apps of software, to explore audiovisual genres as ways to communicate and explore theoretical concepts from class discussions and readings.
