]]>Looking for something different this Spring Break? This is a reminder that Alternative Spring Break (ASB)applications are due on Monday, November 25th.
ASB is a six-day immersive learning experience organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. ASB '20 will take place from March 15-20, 2020. The program positions participants to think critically about social issues in Baltimore and supports them in developing skills in problem solving, community building, and storytelling.
ASB '20 topics are:
- Nutritional Equity (led by Tristen Griffith and Faith Davis)
- Housing Access and Homefulness (led by Ashley Amundsen and Chandler Jenkins)
- Creative Expression and Community Empowerment (led by Joshua Gray and Hager Younes)
Throughout the Spring Break week, group leaders and participants meet with and learn from community partners, government officials, and scholars to develop a sophisticated understanding of local resources and challenges and lay the groundwork for long-term collective civic action.

Retriever Essentials will host its first seasonal Home for the Holiday Lunch on Thursday, November 28th, 2019, 12p-2p in the True Grits Dining Hall.
This lunch is a holiday-style potluck that will offer communal atmosphere to the UMBC members who can't travel back home or don't have families at the time of holidays. Participants can bring food items, holiday decorations, and will also have a chance to help to prepare some treats during the event. The event will also include activities such as board games, arts and craft table, karaoke, letter writing, and of course music and dancing! All UMBC members and their families are welcome.
The Dresher Center for the Humanities and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites applications for Summer Faculty Research Fellowships (SFRF). Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Proposals are welcome and will be considered from all full-time, tenured or tenure-track UMBC faculty pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.
Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellows (individuals or groups) will receive $6,000 support for summer research and assistance in developing extramural funding applications, book proposals, and grant project applications. Funding may also be used for the completion of book manuscripts, major articles, or projects of a similar stature. Between one and three fellowships will be awarded.
The 12th Annual Service-Learning & Civic Engagement Conference will be held THIS Saturday, November 16th, 2019, at the University of Maryland, College Park at the Adele H. Stamp Union. The Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Conference (SLCE) is a full-day opportunity to share success strategies among students, faculty, and staff at institutions throughout Maryland, D.C., and Delaware on the topics of community service, service-learning and civic engagement.

Session Title: Student Leadership Puts Passion to Action Within a Living Learning Community (and Beyond)
Session Description: The Shriver Center’s Service-Learning and Community Engagement (SLCE) program at UMBC creates spaces and pathways in which students, faculty, and staff deepen understanding of community needs and assets and develop relationships with community partners to bring about positive, systemic change through a social justice and equity lens. This workshop exemplifies how student leaders put their passion to action and build community, understand differences, and identify solutions to overcome barriers. This interactive session will create an environment for participants to develop a learning community, exchange knowledge about leadership development, and how to apply it in their respective organizations/campuses.

Session Title: The Struggle for Success: Food Insecurity among College Students
Session Description: The research investigates the prevalence of food insecurity among students at UMBC. Data were gathered through cross-sectional surveys distributed among students, faculty, and staff (N = 784). The results show that among UMBC students about 30 percent of students described their food situation as not having enough to eat in the past year. The findings offer insight into the prevalence of food insecurity among UMBC students and the level of program awareness within the community. This research is particularly important in gauging the need for initiatives which tackle food insecurity and related issues in the student body and the larger community at UMBC. It also provides a model for campus-based solutions and practices which can be utilized to address the problem of food insecurity among college students.

The Shriver Center’s Applied Learning & Community Engagement Team will receive the CCMA “Civic Engagement” Award.
UMBC is a member of Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic (CCMA), which allows our campus to host and support AmeriCorps VISTA Projects as Retriever Essentials, College JUMP, and Arbutus Achievers. Because of our campus membership, student registration is only $10, while faculty, staff, and community partner registration is only $25. This covers breakfast, lunch, and other conference materials.
