    <div class="html-content">UMBC is a member of Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic (CCMA), which allows our campus to host and support AmeriCorps VISTA Projects as Retriever Essentials, College JUMP, and Arbutus Achievers.  One of <div><div><br></div><div>UMBC has some deep history in the creation of CCMA's signature Service-Learning &amp; Civic Engagement (SLCE) event.  In 2008, with support from the Baltimore Collegetown Network and former Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education Diane Lee, The Shriver Living Learning Community planned and hosted "Solutions through Service" - check out the attached "memorabilia").  This event has travelled to different campuses throughout the Maryland-DC-Virginia region. In 2013, it returned to UMBC when we hosted"Getting Real About Civic Engagement."  Over the years, numerous UMBC students, staff, and faculty have led presentations and/or been recognized through a variety of awards.  Learn more by visiting "History" on the CCMA website. <br><div><br></div><div>This year, The Shriver Center's Applied Learning &amp; Community Engagement Team will receive the 2019 CCMA Civic Engagement Award.  Several Shriver Living Learning Community (LLC) Peer Mentors are presenting a session (10:30-11:30am).  </div><div><div><br></div><div>Because of our campus membership, <span>student registration is only $10, while faculty, staff, and community partner registration is only $25.     <div class="html-content"><h2>Dive deep into your city.</h2><span>Deepen your connection with the inspiring community where you live and study. Just 30 students will be selected to participate in </span><span>Collegetown</span><span> </span><span>Underground</span><span>; a four-day immersive opportunity to learn about </span><span>Baltimore</span><span> outside of the classroom.  This is the 5th year of "Go Underground" with previous topics on West Baltimore (2016), East Baltimore (2017), Art and Soul (2018), and Queer Community (2019). </span><br><span> </span><h4><strong>Civic Engagement 2020</strong></h4><span>Collegetown</span><span> </span><span>Underground</span><span> Civic Engagement will focus on how </span><span>college</span><span> students can be active citizens in the </span><span>Baltimore</span><span> region. With 2020 being an election and census year, students will learn about the ways they can participate in the government and local communities.     Lizarazo have </span><span>partnered with Latino Racial Justice Circle and Maryland Humanities in
    community-engaged research in Baltimore</span><span>using
    dialogues and digital storytelling for cooperation between immigrants and
    US-born people in Baltimore faith communities. Global Studies Senior, Romi Pal served
    as research assistant on this project last semester. <br>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Story Work for a Just Future: Exploring Diverse Experiences and Methods within an International Community of Practice</div><div><br></div><div>9th International Digital Storytelling Conference</div><div>March 30-April 1, 2020</div><div>Loughborough University, UK</div><div><br></div><div>Call for Papers and Presentation Proposals</div><div><br></div><div>Storytelling has been defined as ‘the artform of social interaction,’ not only for its inner dynamics, but also for its power to unlock grass-roots knowledge, explore dilemmas, develop community resilience, engender change.</div><div><br></div><div>Stories can generate empathy and trust in the audience and at the same time demonstrate their usefulness because they have the power to give meaning to human behaviors and to trigger emotions.</div><div><br></div><div>The conference is part of a multi-institutional, multinational, two-year process and program – organized in collaboration with UMBC, <a href="https://www.storycenter.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">StoryCenter,</a> <a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access</a>, <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Montgomery College</a>, and <a href="https://www.patientvoices.org.uk/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Patient Voices</a> (UK) – that includes a series of follow-on activities in the Washington, D.C. area and in Maryland in 2021.</div><div><br></div><div>We are interested in proposals that will explore issues related to (but not limited to) the following sub-themes:<br></div><div><ul><li>[Past] Unwanted legacies and key learning to carry forward: difficult pasts; traumatic transitions; post-conflict scenarios; lessons learned from our histories; place-based learning and research; reflective learning.</li><li>[Present] Urgent story work: climate change; health; migration; social justice; education and action; deindustrialization, development, gentrification and displacement.</li><li>[Future] Speculative futures: building communities; crossing boundaries; human/animal and human/landscape relations; new forms of conversation; new digital environments, platforms and applications; storytelling for evaluation; curation; dissemination and storyteller safety.</li></ul></div><div><br></div><div>Abstracts are due October 15, 2019.     leading service-learners in Service-Learning and Civic Engagement work! <p> We currently have two opportunities to be a Student Coordinator in Fall 2019. </p><p> COLLEGE GARDEN YOUTH PROGRAM: Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (pick 1-2 days) 2:45pm-5:30pm. <span><br>  An after school program run by the Y of Central Maryland for youth 1st-8th grade in Baltimore City. <br> Student Coordinators at this site are asked to:<br> - Recruit and train service-learning students<br> - Drive s-l student to College Gardens on a weekly basis<br> - Act as liaison between Shriver Center staff, College Gardens staff and service-learning students<br> - Lead 2 reflections sessions<br> - Attend  Student Coordinator meetings</span></p><div><p> Qualifications: Valid Drivers License, Enrolled at UMBC<br>
     Preferred Qualification: Experience with youth or youth programming,

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Shriver Center Staff is looking for a UMBC student interested in leading service-learners in a Best Buddies Friendship Program.</p><p> </p><p>We currently have an opportunity to be a Student Coordinator in Fall 2019, working with young adults from <a href="https://www.itinerisbaltimore.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Itineris</a>, an organization that serves adults with autism.</p><p> </p><p>Best Buddies Student Coordinator at this site is asked to fulfill:</p><p>-Weekly commitment 3:00-5:30pm (one day a week picked by student coordinator)</p><p>-Meet with Itineris staff prior to semester and during semester to develop engaging activities for Best Buddies group both on-site and in the community</p><p>- Recruit and train service-learning students</p><p>-Facilitate one-to-one friendships between UMBC student buddies and Itineris buddies.</p><p>- Drive S-L student to on a weekly basis</p><p>- Act as liaison between Shriver Center staff, Itineris staff, and service-learning students</p><p>- Lead 2 reflections sessions</p><p>- Attend Student Coordinator meetings</p><p> </p><p>Qualifications: Valid Driver’s License, Enrolled at UMBC</p><p>Preferred Qualification: Experience and interest working with individuals with differing abilities, excellent communication and organizational skills, experience in Practicum 096.  </p><p> </p><p>To apply please email your resume to <a href="mailto:kasven1@umbc.edu">kasven1@umbc.edu</a>.</p><p><br></p><p></p></div>
