Community Engagement and Connection
Many UMBC students are involved with community engagement.
The Shriver Center manages and supports several scholarship opportunities, the majority of which are for 2019-20. To see if you qualify, please take a closer look at the respective programs for qualifications, details regarding application expectations, submission processes, and staff liaison information.

The Shriver Center still has some opportunities available for UMBC students interested in Service-Learning & Community Engagement for the spring 2019 semester:
ARBUTUS ACHIEVERS (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 2:15pm - 4:00pm)*
Tutor middle school students to prepare for high school and college readiness. Create and lead activities that encourage leadership development.
CREATIVE CODERS (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 2:15pm - 4:00pm)*
Calling all Coders! Creative Coders teaches students the basics of computer science through game programming in Scratch. Work with middle school students to instill in them a love of programming for years to come.
COLLEGE GARDENS (Tuesdays or Thursdays, 2:45pm - 5:15pm)
Tutor children from grades K-6 in academics. Develop stimulating activities for either indoor or outdoor recreation--including artistic, physical, and mental tasks.
MS SWIM PROGRAM (Fridays or Sundays, 1 - 4pm)
Students will assist Multiple Sclerosis clients with their water-based physical therapy (aquatic exercises), as well as a chance to develop relationship-building skills. A great opportunity for anyone interested in a healthcare career!
READING PARTNERS (Various Days)
Tutor an elementary school student one-on-one to strengthen their reading abilities using a structured and easy-to-follow curriculum.
RICA (Wednesdays, 11:30am - 3:00pm)
Assist students, ages 12 -18 with emotional disturbance disorders on schoolwork and behavior in a therapeutic environment.
SHERMAN CENTER EARLY LITERACY PROGRAM (Days/Times Vary)
Build young children's literacy and language skills as a classroom tutor, grades K-3 (ages 5 - 8). Tasks include reading with students and assisting them with writing/vocabulary activities and assignments.
SWES (Southwest Emergency Services) (limited spaces available)
Assist in sorting clothes, food, medical supplies, etc. to keep this thrift store organized and manageable. In walking distance of UMBC.
Transportation is provided for all sites except Reading Partners.
*Must be able to attend both days; sites are within walking distance

UMBC's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is in need of non-certified volunteers who don't serve as tax preparers, but will work with clients entirely person-to-person, right on campus at the Apartment Community Center (walkable).
Volunteer responsibilities will involve helping connect low-income Baltimore households to essential financial services like setting up credit union bank accounts, helping them buy savings bonds, and issuing prepaid cards so they avoid check cashing fees.
STUDENTS CAN EARN
ACADEMIC CREDIT, A TRANSCRIPT NOTATION, AND WORK EXPERIENCE
Available through the Shriver Center if volunteering for 30 hours or more this semester, students can register for our 096 Service-Learning practicum to receive a transcript notation. In addition, students can register for SOCY 396 to earn upper level elective credits. Work with clients
one-on-one and gain skills in relationship building.

Rate of Pay: 12-15 hours/week, $13-15/hr
Shift Availability: Hours 3 pm-6:30pm, 4 Days a week, M-F (some days flexible)
Location: 2 Walden Circle Court, Woodlawn, MD
Summary
Walden Circle Community Center provides out-of-school time services for school-
aged children (5-14) at Walden Circle Townhouses in Woodlawn, MD. Students
receive homework help, snacks, art enrichment, and occasional field trips. The
afterschool program is supported by UMBC and other local university students.
WCCC follows the academic calendar of Baltimore County Public Schools
Responsibilities and Duties
Activities Leader supports WCCC staff in maintaining safe a safe and stable
environment for children. Primary duties are to personally engage students and
monitor student activities during after school hours. Activities Leader will be
responsible for working with all students that attend after-school programing in two
major capacities: (1) Providing homework guidance or enrichment for school work.
(2) Facilitating activities include but are not limited to board games, outdoor
recreation, arts & crafts, or other themes activities that are planned by the site
coordinator/program manager during the school year.
Qualifications
Must be committed and enthusiastic and have some experience working with youth.
Candidates must also submit a background check which can be completed on
campus at the UMBC police office.

Baltimore City's Annual Homeless Point-in-Time Count
Data collection strategy to support "The Journey Home"
Sponsored by the Baltimore Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services, staff is in the process of planning for their annual Homeless Point-in-Time (PIT) count and are in need of volunteers to help! The PIT Count is an important service engagement and data collection strategy that helps to advance The Journey Home, Baltimore’s plan to end homelessness. The PIT helps Baltimore to identify individuals, families, and youth experiencing homelessness and connect them to much needed housing and support services. It also helps the Mayor’s Office to gather important data on the needs and characteristics of people experiencing homelessness. This information is used to inform community planning and the development of effective interventions to end homelessness in Baltimore.
Beginning on Sunday, January 27, 2019 and throughout the week, volunteers are needed to canvass neighborhoods, hospitals, service provider’s locations, and other places that people experiencing homelessness can be found in Baltimore to administer surveys to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Great News for Students Going Abroad Summer/Fall 2019
Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship Deadline Extended!
The Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship for Summer 2019, Fall 2019 and Academic Year 2019-2020 study abroad programs has been extended until January 21st, 2019. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000!
Eligibility:
· U.S. citizen or permanent resident
· Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. (graduate students are not eligible)
· Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution
· Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in country/countries
If interested in applying please contact the Education Abroad Office at sao@umbc.edu.
And remember, deadlines for Summer/Fall 2019 and Academic Year 2019/20 are swiftly approaching!

Shriver Peaceworker Fellow Phillip McKnight In The News!!!
Good bird health means good community health!
Here’s a nice local news piece on WJZ featuring our very own Peaceworker Phillip McKnight planting trees with school kids through his work with Audubon. This feature is from William Paca Elementary, in East Baltimore just a few blocks north of Patterson Park where he’s been working with the Audubon Society to do environmental education and bird friendly greening projects. You’ll see Phillip at work early on planting trees (with birds-eye hat and black vest)…and then at about 1minute mark you’ll see the Audubon sign as they talk about the bird friendly gardens.
Kudos to Phillip on this nice spotlight about engaging school kids and community in this good work!

Service-Learning with Best Buddies
Serve while forming new friendships!!!
Have you been wanting to participate in Best Buddies? Here's your chance! You can participate in weekly service through The Shriver Center while enrolled in the 096 Community Service & Learning Practicum.
The Shriver Center Service-Learning & Community Engagement team in collaboration with UMBC Best Buddies is happy to announce that we have established another site at Itineris, in Baltimore, for the Spring 2019 semester and beyond! We are currently looking for about 4 or 5 service learners for Spring 2019 who have time for a weekly volunteering commitment at Itineris around 3:00-5:00 PM (one day a week). You would be paired one-to-one with a friend with a diagnosis of autism and hang out with your buddy during that time!
