The Path Before Me
"College Coaching" by UMBC Students
UMBC's college access/readiness program, Path Before Me, is actively recruiting Spring volunteers. The hope is to have students placed in site schools by the end of February. Volunteers will work in city schools, providing "college coaching" to high school juniors.
Last semester, there were 13 student volunteers who held over 100 individual coaching sessions with these high school students. The youth feedback about the experience was great.

To begin tutoring, you will need to register through the Shriver Center.
What you do:
"Coach" high school juniors around the SAT, the college application process and experience. You will meet either in small groups, or one on one with your mentee, at their schools. Snacks are provided, as well as mentoring materials, and an on site coordinator. You can volunteer at one or two sites, if interested.
City--will focus very closely on SAT Prep. The school has material for us to use, which includes practice problems and building study skills.
Ben Franklin and Poly--will focus more holistically on the college process, including essay writing, the application, the college experience, and the SAT.
Times:
Tuesdays 2:30p-5p (City College)
Wednesdays 2:30p-5p (Ben Franklin)
Thursdays 10a-1p (Poly)
Transportation:
Frank will work to designate one student from each school site to be responsible for driving and taking a greater leadership role within the group, making them eligible for a $500 stipend. This student can drive their own car, or the Shriver Van. Leaders are still needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The goal is to begin at the end of February.

Spring 2018 Service-Learning Opportunities
Passion with Purpose, Connect with Community
Dedicated UMBC colleagues across departments, colleges, and
disciplines having been digging deep into "applied learning
experiences" and what means at UMBC. This includes identifying
stakeholders, criteria, and a definition:
A UMBC applied learning
experience engages students in reflectively developing knowledge, attitudes,
skills, and values in the traditional classroom setting or in contexts beyond
the classroom. Applied learning experiences promote career readiness and
responsible citizenship.
Recognized applied learning experiences include
service-learning, which can be secured through The Shriver Center’s 096
Community Service & Learning Practicum. Dr. Thomas Penniston, Shriver
Peaceworker Fellow Program alumnus, successfully completed his doctoral program
in Language, Literacy and Culture on the benefits of service-learning through qualitative

At the beginning of the 3rd week of the spring
semester, some sites have filled, but others have great needs. With close to 70
community partners (the majority being youth-based sites), we are seeking UMBC
students to help partners build capacity and move their respective missions.

SUCCESS - there are a number of openings - see the attachment
Walden Circle Community Center – Thursdays are a top priority;
other days are welcomed (Monday-Friday, one day)!

The Service-Learning Team meets students WHEN they are!
Schedules can be tough at this time of year. To increase opportunities for learning and exploring, the Service-Learning Team is expanding its hours for the remainder of the Spring 096 Practicum Registration period, 5-8 pm. Every Tuesday beginning next Tuesday, February 13th-Tuesday, February 27th (2/13, 2/20, and 2/27). Service-Learning Staff will be at The Shriver Center on Tuesday nights until 8 pm.
We are located on the first floor of the Public Policy Building, just past the elevators.

Volunteer at Saint Agnes Hospital in Spring 2018

Interested in volunteering in a hospital environment? Want to be part of a support team?
Saint Agnes Hospital will be holding a Volunteer Orientation on Sunday, February 11, 2018 from 1:00 - 5:00pm in the hospital's Alagia Auditorium. Come hear about the supporting role you could play, and learn about the volunteer opportunities.
Saint Agnes Hospital is a 60-hour for the semester volunteer site. Volunteers should be ready to start the first week of March!
Your Check List:
- Stop by the Shriver Center to pick up a Saint Agnes Volunteer Application before attending the orientation.
- Contact Michelle Slafkosky at: mslafkos@ascension.org to confirm your attendance at the Volunteer Orientation no later than Friday, February 9th!
- Once you are all set to volunteer, contact the Shriver Center for enrollment in the 096 Practicum for the spring semester.

Ideal candidate: Is interested in continuing at Walden Circle into Fall 2018, and possibly participating in our summer camp (July 10 - August 11). Likes kids, has experience working with kids. Up for finding the balance between work and play with a bunch of kids.
About us: Walden Circle is a semistructured after school environment. We are open Monday to Friday from 3-6pm to children aged 5-12 of the Walden Circle community in Woodlawn. We follow the Baltimore County school schedule for closures. We play games (inside and outside), tutor kids in homework, have dance parties, make crafts, etc.
