The Samson, Rosetta A., and Saddie Feldman Award$700
Established in January 1996 by Sadie B. Feldman in memory of her family, this award is given to a UMBC student (junior or senior) who has demonstrated, through community service and academic activities, an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship.
Samuel
I. Rosenberg Fund Award$700
Established in April 1995 by Samuel I. Rosenberg, this award is given to a UMBC student (any year) who has completed a public service-focused internship, with either a nonprofit or government organization, directly addressing a social challenge.
The scholarship award will be applied toward
tuition for Spring 2018.

Of Note: Humanities Faculty
Last week, several UMBC humanities faculty took part in the major
national conferences in their fields. Marjoleine Kars, Associate
Professor and Chair of History, received two prizes for her American Historical Review
article, "Dodging Rebellion: Politics and Gender in the Berbice Slave
Uprising.” She was awarded the Vanderwood Prize, sponsored by the
Conference on Latin American History, and the Carol Gold Prize,
sponsored by the Coordinating Council for Women in History.
At in the Modern Languages Association conference in New York
- Maleda Belilgne, Assistant Professor, Africana Studies and English,
presented on James Baldwin's Speculative Imagery with her paper, "Nobody
Escapes Anything: Proleptic Sound in Sonny’s Blue."
- Lindsay DiCuirci, Assistant Professor, English, presented on Nathaniel
Hawthorne with her paper, "A Is for Archive: (Un)Dead Things in
Hawthorne’s ‘Custom-House.”
- Jessica
Berman, Professor and Director of the Dresher Center, presided over a
session sponsored by the MLA’s Publication Committee on the creation,
preservation, digitization, and critique of archives.
At the American Historical Association conference in Washington, DC
- Kate Brown, Professor, History, was the featured speaker at the AHA
Modern European History Section Luncheon. Her lecture was titled, "The
Great Chernobyl Acceleration: How Writing European History has Changed
in the Age of the Anthropocene."
- Christy Ford Chapin, Associate Professor, History, participated in the
round table, "Late Breaking: Revolt against Regulation in the Time of Trump:
Historical Perspectives.”
- Meredith Oyen, Associate Professor, chaired the round table, "After War:
Recognizing, Representing, and Remembering Veterans in American Society,
1945-2016.”
- Scott Casper, Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social
Sciences and Professor of History, chaired the "Teaching with Material
Culture and Historic Site" roundtable.

The Office of Summer & Winter Programs awards scholarships to UMBC degree-seeking students who enroll in Winter Session 2018.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

· 100 undergraduate or 23 graduate credits earned by the end of the fall 2017 semester
· Demonstrated financial need based on FAFSA

Apply for a Dresher Center 2018 Summer Faculty Fellowship
UMBC Faculty should apply by February 15, 2018
The Dresher Center for the Humanities and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites applications for Summer Faculty Research Fellowships (SFRF). Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Dresher Center Summer Research Fellows will receive support for summer research and assistance in developing extramural funding applications, book proposals, and grant project applications. Funding may also be used for the completion of a book manuscript, a major article, or a project of similar stature.
Proposals are welcome and will be considered from all full-time, tenured or tenure-track UMBC faculty pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.
The deadline for submissions is
February 15, 2018. Proposals should be submitted by email to
dreshercenter@umbc.edu.
The CAHSS Dean's Office will hold an informational session on preparing proposals for CAHSS Centers Summer Faculty Research Fellowships on Monday, November 14, 2017, from 2:30pm until 4:00 p.m. in Commons 331.
