Student Ambassadors (SA's) will work as a team to plan and lead monthly elementary and middle school visits to UMBC.  SA's will lead a tour of campus with students and their families, plan and lead a STEM activity and a fun game/sporting activity in the RAC, and eat with the students at True Grits during each visit. Each visit is fun and rewarding in many ways, but mostly because it exposes inner city students to college life from an early age.  Studies have shown that early age college exposure increases the chances of college attendance later on.  As an SA, you would directly be part of shaping a young student's future, so we hope that you will join us for this exciting opportunity!

For some time, Shriver Center colleagues have discussed creating a video to show at Orientation Sessions for new UMBC students, shared BY students. 

Over the last six months+, UMBC Alum and Peaceworker Fellow Jaclin Paul transformed that idea into a reality. This project gave many of us the chance to get creative and shine the spotlight on great people and partners. It's just a snapshot.  

Jaclin did an amazing job - there were a number of iterations - each one got tighter and better.  Special thanks to community partners BARCS, Baltimore Community ToolBank, Paul's Place, Choice Jobs Program, and Choice Education Team.

We are currently using this video in the Student Sprint Sessions, as well as a slightly shortened version within the shared Shriver Center/Career Center Family presentation!

Isabel is not only the founder of the Reach Initiative, she is also a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar, France-Merrick Fellow, and a recipient of the Jacqueline Hrabowski Scholarship, among many others. 

Isabel will graduate with the class of 2017 and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in sociology at Northeastern University.

Global Studies student Sophia Lopresti was recently named a Newman Civic Fellow! 

The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes students who are committed to finding solutions to challenging problems that communities face across the country and around the world. Fellows are nominated by their university's president and are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to leadership, civic engagement, and problem-solving.

Sophia is a Global Studies major in the Development, Health and the Environment track, and is pursuing a certificate in Intercultural Communication. She will graduate in May 2018.

With funding from the Brazilian government, the Fulbright Brazil ETA Program is expanded for the Program Year 2017-18 with 76 additional grants to be offered.   A special open application period will be held from May 2 to July 14, 2017. The deadline is Friday, July 14 at 5:00 pm Eastern Time.   

To be eligible, applicants must be a U.S. citizen and hold a bachelor’s degree by July 14, 2017.
