TheService-Learning & Civic Engagement Conference (SLCE)(http://bit.ly/1PXtE2k)is an annual event hosted by a network of universities and individuals dedicated to creating strong civic engagement, service-learning, and community partnerships in the Maryland and D.C. area. UMBC has been involved with this event when it "re-emerged" in 2008 at
UMBC (planned and implemented by the Shriver Living Learning Community,
thanks to Dr. Diane Lee) and then again at 2013 with the theme, "Getting

Call for Proposals
The Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Conference is requesting proposals for workshops and posters. We are looking for excited and passionate individuals who are doing service-learning and civic engagement work in their communities and classes. Please share your experiences and help us collectively to develop more robust service-learning and civic engagement programs at every level throughout our communities. Please frame your proposal around one of the four main themes we are focusing on for SLCE 2016: Community Partnerships, Social Change Leadership, Academic Service-Learning, and Civic and Community Engagement. NEH Announces 2016 Summer Seminars & Institutes
Faculty are Invited to Apply by March 1, 2016
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) offers tuition-free opportunities for college and university educators to study a variety of humanities topics in the summer. Stipends of $1,200-$3,900 help cover the expenses for these one- to five-week programs.

Dresher Center Summer Research Fellows will receive support for research and assistance in developing extramural funding applications, book proposals, and grant project applications. Funding may also be used for the completion of book manuscripts, major articles, or projects of a similar stature.

Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC)
Research Awards for Adjunct Faculty
The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC) is pleased to announce that we have been allocated professional development funding for adjunct faculty.
UMBC recently established the fund, to be administered annually by the AFAC as a standing university committee, to support professional development for adjunct faculty.
Awards for each individual adjunct faculty member will not exceed $500 in the academic year. Amount of individual awards may be affected by factors including number of applicants.

This workshop is for faculty who are interested in or planning to apply for a 2016 CAHSS Center (CIRCA, Dresher Center, IRC, MIPAR) Summer Faculty Research Fellowship or Dresher Center Residential Faculty Research Fellowship. The Center directors and CAHSS Dean's Office will discuss the 2016 fellowships, application process, evaluation criteria, and award expectations. "Challenging the plenary power of national governments over immigration, local governments have increasingly engaged in the control of immigration and in the integration of immigrants in host communities. Because most immigrants live in urban areas, local immigration policies are an important piece of the governance of international migration. They can affect international migration flows, the implementation of national immigration policies, and immigrants’ access to employment, housing and public services. In “The migration-development nexus in local immigration policy: Baltimore City and the Hispanic diaspora”, I offer a theory of local immigration policy that emphasizes the developmental efforts of local governments and immigrant communities."

Telling the Story of Baltimore. This is an interactive
exhibit that you can spend as much time (or as little time) checking out. Our
student staff have put a ton an effort into creating their research boards and
Prezi presentations related to the story of Baltimore and the Uprisings and it

be talking about journalism, ethical reporting, and new media in a discussion

Denise Meringolo on the BaltimoreUprising2015.org crowd-sourcing
archive, will join us for a conversation about that project and documenting the
stories of the uprising.

New! Digital Tools for Humanities Research
Faculty "Lunch & Learn" Session on Nov. 2nd

This session will introduce several of the digital tools being used by UMBC humanities faculty for their research, which can be employed across the disciplines. A light lunch will be provided.

Zotero and Scrivener
Meredith Oyen, History
Zotero is a free reference management software program that can be used both for research and for teaching. It is particularly useful for organizing, sorting, and sharing sources and projects between writing partners or groups. Scrivener is a writing platform particularly useful for organizing, drafting, and revising long-form writing in the humanities and social sciences. Dr. Oyen will demonstrate some of the advantages of using both with samples from her own work.
Adobe Premiere Pro, Excel, and Atlas.ti
Ed Larkey, Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication
Dr. Larkey works with digital tools in his cross-cultural comparative analyses of international television series. He is currently using Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, Microsoft Excel, Atlas,ti, MultiModal Analysis, and Cinemetrics to compile, correlate, and visualize quantitative and qualitative data related to temporal parameters on narrative structure, sequences, and content. The session will be of interest to faculty doing research in anthropology, cultural studies, ethnography, discourse analysis, and audiovisual analysis.

This session is designed for faculty seeking external funding for arts and humanities research and scholarship. Participants will learn the process for preparing and submitting external funding applications at UMBC.
Topics will include:
- campus resources for locating, preparing, and routing grant and fellowship applications;
- developing timelines and budgets;
- submitting applications.
Time will be given for Q & A and (brief) discussion of project ideas.
Presented by the Dresher Center, CAHSS Dean's Office, and the Office of Sponsored Programs
