Kids in The Kitchen Intern position!

<Tagline>Great internship with opportunity with Kids in the Kitchen!</Tagline>

Interns will teach bi-weekly cooking sessions of Kids in the Kitchen, a program at Paul's Place where students in the after-school program prepare and cook meals to take home to their families. Interns will be mentored by the KiK coordinator, they will participate in an orientation session in early September to learn about the program, and then each week will be expected to review and know the lesson and recipe so that they can guide the volunteers and students in the successful making of the recipe. KiK sessions happen twice a month, and interns should pick one day of the week and commit to coming to all of the sessions on that day. Interns should be responsible, have some experience teaching, have a passion for cooking and nutrition, and a desire to learn. Interns will be paid a $250 stipend; Paul's Place is happy to work with university students who want to receive credit for this internship. Prospective interns should submit a resume and cover letter detailing why they are interested in participating in the program. Interviews will be conducted in late August.

Mondays: Sept 21, Oct 5, Oct 19, Nov 9, Nov 16, Dec 7

Tuesdays: Sept 22 ,Oct 6, Oct 20, Nov 10, Nov 17, Dec 8

Wednesdays: Sept 23, Oct 6, Oct 21, Nov 10, Nov 18, Dec 9

Thursdays: Sept 24, Oct 6, Oct 21, Nov 10, Nov 18, Dec 9

The hours are 2-7pm each of the days listed above.

Please submit resume's to Charlotte Keniston cskeniston@gmail.com

NEH 2016 Summer Stipends Competition for UMBC Faculty

<Tagline>Call for Proposals for UMBC Nominations</Tagline>

Limited Submission Opportunity through the UMBC Office of the Vice President for Research

http://research.umbc.edu/limited-submission-opportunities/

Internal proposals are due by August 28, 2015

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipend program provides funding for faculty and independent scholars to pursue research in the humanities during the summer. UMBC may submit up to two nominations for NEH Summer Stipends.

These stipends support individuals in advancing research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Though this is an NEH program, many faculty members in the arts and social sciences work on projects that the NEH might fund.
Dr. Felipe Filomeno, Early Career Prize Recipient

Congratulations to Political Science and Global Studies professor Felipe Filomeno, who has been awarded the Early Career Prize of the Economics & Politics Section of the Latin American Studies Association. He won the award in recognition of his 2014 article in the Journal of Comparative Politics, "Patterns of Rule-Making and Intellectual Property Regimes: Lessons from South American Soybean Agriculture." Below is a summary Dr. Filomeno's article:

Around 1980, states and corporations from core countries led by the U.S. government started to demand from other countries reforms that increased the scope and strength of private intellectual property rights. The resulting global upward rachet of intellectual property protection has not developed uniformly across time and space. This study presents a theory of cross-national variation in intellectual property regimes based on a comparative-historical analysis of the making of intellectual property rules in South American soybean agriculture (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay). It concludes that a corporatist pattern of rule-making is conducive to weak intellectual property regime (Argentina), whereas pluralism (Brazil) and state capture and abstention (Paraguay) are more conducive to strong intellectual property regimes.
