<Title>Devin Hagerty, Political Science, 2014-2015 Lipitz Professor</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><p><span>Devin Hagerty, professor of political science and founding director of the global studies program, has been named the Lipitz Professor of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences for 2014-2015. This professorship is supported by an endowment created by Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz Family Foundation “to recognize and support innovative and distinguished teaching and research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.”</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>An internationally recognized scholar of South Asian international relations (India-Pakistan and South Asia-US), Hagerty came to UMBC from the University of Sydney in 2001. Since then he has published two books, five articles, and 13 book chapters. He founded the journal </span><em>Asian Security</em><span> in 2003 and has served as its managing editor or co-editor ever since. He teaches courses in international relations and has won the Political Science Teacher of the Year award three times. He has served as chair of the political science department, currently chairs one of the working groups for the university’s strategic planning, and now directs our new, fast-growing global studies program—among a long list of service to UMBC. In November 2013, Hagerty wrote an </span><a href="http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2013/11/12/essay-suggests-liberal-arts-training-relates-skills#sthash.TrEcbPgY.dpbs" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">op-ed published in </a><em><a href="http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2013/11/12/essay-suggests-liberal-arts-training-relates-skills#sthash.TrEcbPgY.dpbs" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Inside Higher Ed</a>  </em><span>in which he introduced UMBC’s global studies program and argued that a liberal arts education is essential in developing a “global competence” among students.</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p>During his year as the Lipitz Professor, Dr. Hagerty will work on a book project entitled “Fear, Ambition, and the Sturdy Child of Terror: South Asia’s Tria<span>ngular Nuclear Dilemma.”</span></p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p><br></p></div></div>

    <div class="html-content">The Woodrow Wilson Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color is accepting applications again (see eligibility information below). The program seeks to recruit high achieving students of color into the field of education by paying $30,000 toward their master's degree programs in education and providing support during their initial years in the classroom. UMBC has had two successful nominees in the past.   <br><br><strong><em>The deadline is Friday, October 31, 2014. </em></strong><br><br>If you are interested in teaching and meet the eligibility requirements below, contact Mavis Sanders, Professor, Education at <a href="Mavis%20Sanders%20&lt;msanders@umbc.edu&gt;" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">msanders@umbc.edu</a>.   <br><br><strong><br>ELIGIBILITY</strong><br><br>The Fellowship program seeks to expand the pool of outstanding candidates teaching in urban and rural schools by recruiting exceptionally able arts and sciences majors for whom teaching is a new career option.     <div class="html-content">The Shriver Center is seeking qualified candidates for paid positions to support two innovative youth development programs:<br><br>1.  <strong>Walden Circle Community Center </strong>- local community-based program supporting youth (elementary through high school) in an after-school setting. <strong>One position on Wednesdays, 2:45-6:30 pm</strong> (which includes travel time).  <br><br>2. <strong> Lakeland Young Explorers (<em>Where STEM is Elementary) </em></strong>- school-based, after school program for 1st-4th graders at Lakeland Elementary Middle School.  <strong>Several positions are still open for Mondays AND Wednesdays, Tuesdays AND Thursdays, 2:45-6pm</strong> (which includes travel time)<strong> - ideally Fellows would do M/W or Tues/Th.</strong><br><br>These leadership positions are connected to the Fall 096 Community Service &amp; Learning Practicum (Leadership section).  Student Coordinators/Fellows will plan activities with the site coordinators and manage other participating volunteers (enrolled through the 096 Prac). <br><br>Review the attached descriptions/applications for more details.  The application process for both of these programs is still open, with the hope to fill positions ASAP!   To set up an interview for:<br><br><ul><li>Walden Circle, contact Joel Baker, <a href="mailto:jbaker13@umbc.edu">jbaker13@umbc.edu</a></li><li>Lakeland Young Explorers, send completed application to  Zach Pekor, <a href="mailto:zpekor@umbc.edu">zpekor@umbc.edu</a></li></ul><p><strong>Volunteer openings</strong> are still available for these programs (Walden Circle, M-Thurs) and Lakeland Young Explorers (M-Thurs).  <br></p></div>

<Title>Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups in the Humanities</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Dresher Center invites proposals for new Faculty Working Groups in the Humanities. Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups are collaborative, interdisciplinary communities of scholars working on humanities projects, research concerns, or matters of public interest. The Center provides support for the formation of these groups in an effort to promote intellectual exchange and support research activity in the humanities among scholars across campus. Working groups meet regularly and can use their funds to travel to sites or archives, host speakers, explore technologies, create new resources or materials, or other similar activities.</p><p><span>Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester) for their first-year activities. Priority will be given to groups with at least one member from a humanities department.</span></p><p>Fundable activities include travel to sites or archives, speaker presentations, use/purchase of technology, creation of resources or materials, and support for regular meetings or workshops, etc.</p><p>Deadlines for best consideration are <u>November 3rd</u> for groups beginning in spring 2015 and <u>April 1st</u> for groups beginning in fall 2015.</p><p><span>More information and 2015 Application Form: </span><span><a href="http://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/scholarly-resources/faculty-working-groups-in-the-humanities/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/scholarly-resources/faculty-working-groups-in-the-humanities/</a></span></p><p><br></p>

Fellows will be relieved of teaching duties and, as possible and appropriate, of service duties for the Fall Semester 2015 or Spring Semester 2016, in order to pursue their proposed research programs.     <div class="html-content"><p>National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Successful applicants receive an outright award of $6,000 to support two consecutive months of full-time research during summer 2015.  UMBC may submit up to two nominations for this award.  The CAHSS Dean’s Office, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the Dresher Center for the Humanities will work as appropriate with the two nominees selected as they prepare their applications to the NEH.</p><p><em>Instructions to Faculty</em></p><p><span>Review the guidelines <span> </span><a href="http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a><span>   </span>and <strong>submit the following materials to Scott Casper</strong>, Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences by <strong>Monday, September 8, 2014</strong>.</span></p><ul><li>A project narrative, not to exceed three-single-spaced pages, as described in the guidelines.  As the guidelines stipulate, the narrative must include an explanation of the part or stage of the project supported by the Summer Stipend and a work plan;</li><li>The names, positions, and affiliations of two or more potential recommenders, with, ideally, no more than one being from UMBC and with at least one being a scholar with expertise in the field of the proposed project.</li></ul><p></p><p>In addition to the quality of the application, criteria for selection will include the likelihood that the award will have a significant impact on the faculty member’s program of scholarship and that the work proposed for the fellowship period can be completed. Secondary considerations will be whether the individual has other available sources of support for the proposed work (e.g., support from UMBC or another sponsor) and whether the individual is concurrently being nominated for or applying for other awards.</p><p><em><br></em></p></div>
