Will, a Social Work student at UMBC, feels a deep personal commitment to the field of mental health and his dedication shines through in his daily interactions with the adults who attend our program. As a community mental health program, the Clubhouse functions as a non-clinical organization largely run by adults living with the effects of mental illness. Here, mentally ill adults are not “clients” or “consumers,” but rather “members” who work alongside staff and interns to complete meaningful work.

Although our model is unique, Will fully grasped the driving force of the program after his first day, pioneering multiple projects with members to learn from them in a mutually supportive working environment. He began conducting intensive research on Social Security benefits and employment to ensure that members receiving public assistance were aware of the necessary steps they would need to take prior to returning to work. Will has worked on this project with Daniel, a member knowledgeable about the process of obtaining benefits. Will has also played an active part in our Wellness Program through working in a community garden. He’s helped plant fresh crops for the Clubhouse to use in the daily meals we prepare as part of our regular workday. His strong investment in the Clubhouse philosophy has made him a perfect fit for B’More, where he has been actively engaged in the diversity of our work."

*To find out more about B'More Clubhouse and what is going on there this spring, check out the "B'More Clubhouse Times" newsletter, featuring our service-learning honoree!*

Service-Learning Intern of the Month: Longte Kuptong

Service Site: Maryland Food Bank

http://www.mdfoodbank.org/site/c.mgLPIYOzGlF/b.5551677/k.BF32/Home.htm

"Longte Kuptong has been organizing groups from UMBC to volunteer at the Maryland Food Bank for over two years. Not only does he organize the group but he also drives them to and from UMBC and provides guidance once they are back in the kitchen. Longte has also been helpful in finding volunteers for our big events. Last year, for our Blue Jean Ball, Longte graciously organized a group to come and help on a Friday evening with food service and cleaning. This event is the largest fund-raising event at the Maryland Food Bank and raised over $250,000 last year. Due to the Longte’s leadership, we were able to coordinate the food service and clean up in record time.

“When we know Longte is coming, we save work for them because he is reliable and we know he can get so much done,” says Aida Blanco, Executive Chef at the Maryland Food Bank. Without the help of Longte, the kitchen would not be able to function at the level it does. Volunteers are the lifeline of the Maryland Food Bank and we cannot operate without their support. Longte is an exemplary individual who is dedicated to our mission to end hunger in Maryland. And that is shown to us week after week when Longte arrives with his group."

Both of these sites (B'More Clubhouse and Maryland Food Bank), along with many others, will be represented at UMBC's Connecting Community Partners Service Fair this Friday, April 26th, 11:30 am-1:30 pm, in BOTH UC 310 & UC 312. Please see the attached flyer.

An Art History Curatorial Project by Carlyn Thomas

<Tagline>Opening Reception on Thursday, May 2nd</Tagline>

Carlyn Thomas, a Visual Arts major in the Art History & Museum
Studies concentration, is curating an art exhibition as part of her
senior thesis project. Carlyn has chosen to go the extra mile by
installing her exhibition at a gallery in downtown Baltimore. She is the
first Art History & Museum Studies student to do so.

Out of Mind,
the title of Carlyn’s curatorial project, features artwork by eight
contemporary artists who explore various states of mental distress from
depression and self-harm to phobias and bi-polar disorder. Out of Mind
will be on view at Gallery 788, located in downtown Baltimore, MD, from
    May 2nd-11th.
According to Carlyn, “the artists featured in Out of Mind share a
deep-seated desire to bring public awareness to the subject of human
neuroses. Examining ways of coping with these ever-present difficulties
these artists aim to strike chords of recognition in viewers about what
it is to be human. The artists are rebelling against the fact that for
too long these neuroses have been repressed and feared because of the
archaic stigmas assigned to them. The works in the show make the point
that these neuroses and personal instabilities are everyday realities
    that are within us all.”

The Opening Reception is Thursday, May 2nd at 7-11PM
Gallery788, 218 West Saratoga St. Baltimore, MD 21201

At the opening reception Carlyn will give a curatorial talk about her
thesis and research and will conduct a walkthrough of the show. The talk
and walkthrough will begin at 7 PM.

Tip of the week: Best places to find cheap textbooks

<Tagline>You should not have to pay so much for textbooks!</Tagline>

College tuition, room and board, etc. already add up to a huge amount of money. Knowing where to buy textbooks for cheap will save a lot for a college student!

Sourced from: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/sites-college-textbooks-cheap-rent-buy/

I so wish the web was there when we were struggling to make ends meet
in college and university. It was a constant battle of the conscience
between spending on the date, or ‘squandering’ money on things like
books and other learning objects. The library wasn’t much help as it
often resembled the California gold rush with ten heads competing for
    one book.

The reason for my ire is that we didn’t have websites which told us
where to find (rent or buy) cheap college textbooks. But today’s
generation just has to type in a URL and hey presto, there are more than
a dozen sites plying cheap textbooks for sale or rent.

I am on a slow burn, but let’s take a look at ten websites where you can get college textbooks for cheap.

Note: Most of these sites are US only.

BookRenter

Start with the large search box that helps you trawl through 5
million textbooks. BookRenter offers you no-questions asked book return
program plus free shipping. The range of categories cover almost all
subjects that are taught in colleges (don’t forget to click the little
‘More’ links). BookRenter gives you different rental rates depending on
the borrowing periods. You can also buy used books from the BookRenter
Basement. What’s more you can take notes (use highlighters for instance)
on the books you borrow from BookRenter. You can return in-store at any
of the affiliated locations or ship your return with a pre-paid
    shipping label. (Read Directory mention)

Chegg

Chegg is very similar to the previous book rental website when it
comes to book return guarantees, shipping speed, and even social
service. Chegg is a selling point for your own books as well as textbook
rentals at low prices. The differentiator is that Chegg offers course
reviews and grade distributions as well as homework help for a course
you select. Along with first hand reviews of a course, you also get a
detailed schedule of the books you need for it. Comparing the list price
and the rental, Chegg offers significant savings…some go up to 90%.
    (Read Directory mention)

Textbooks.com

This too is a similar site with a very similar service. Textbooks.com
shows that when it comes to cheap textbooks for purchase or rent, no
site is too many as it almost mirrors the service offerings of the above
two sites. The book rental site has a referral program that lets you
earn $5 for each friend you refer to the site for a book rental or
purchase. The site offers free shipping on orders above $25.

eCampus

You can sell and ship your used textbooks for free via the buyback
program. Most of it goes back into the textbook rental program on
eCampus. You can also choose to buy a book at a low-cost (with savings
upto 90%). Some books also have digital copies (eTextbooks) which again
come in two versions – online version and an offline viewing version.
When it comes to returning your rented textbooks, shipping is free for
all orders over $59 and rental return shipping is always free.

Campus Books

This book rental site comes with its own smartphone apps. Campus
Books also offers in-store pickup of books along with a very handy local
search feature. The iPhone and Android apps use GPS to locate one near
you, and you can the site search to get to libraries or retails shops
for the book you want. Campus Books also searches a catalog of 8 million
books for the best deals available. If you want to rent textbooks, use
the rental comparison engine which compares results from ten book rental
     companies at once.

BookByte

BookByte is a simpler textbook buying and selling service. The
Guaranteed Buyback service is appealing because at the end of the term
you are not obliged to return the book. You can sell your book back to
BookByte for a lower purchase price and a 10% rebate when you return the
textbook. Also, if your Guaranteed Buyback order totals over $49.00
    then your shipping is free.

Big Words

Bigwords.com is a comparative search engine that compares books
across bookstores and brings you the lowest one on new and used
textbooks. You can also use it to search for student loans, DVDs, music,
     and games.

Direct Textbook

Using Direct textbook to hunt for a new or used textbook is a three
step process. Simply search for a book, browse through the search
results, and then visit any of the 200 stores that the site taps to buy
or rent your textbook. The textbook search engine sources online book
retail sites like Amazon, Barnes&Noble, and some of the others we
cover here. If you are planning to sell your used textbook, the site
lets you check the best buyback price at 25+ stores.

Student Book Trades

The unique feature of the college textbook book site is definitely
the monthly free giveaway. Above that, the site is based on trade…you
can list your textbooks here (the ones you have and a wishlist of the
ones you want) and use it to trade and exchange textbooks with others.
Check out the long list of participating colleges on the site.

Intern of the Week: Nia Hampton for Media and Communications

<Tagline>Learn about Nia's experience at SNAED</Tagline>

position/assignment, including your day-to-day tasks and
    responsibilities.

As an intern at Station North it’s my job to research potential grants. My
daily tasks include working on my grant proposal as well as
administrative duties, such as updating the list serve. I also have to
make people sign up for our mailing list at various events and
    festivals.

2. What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company and what have you found most challenging?

I’ve enjoyed the events and festivals we’ve planned and co-created. Final
Fridays are really fun and Artscape was cool as usual. I also really
enjoy researching grants; I’m always surprised by how much money is
readily available to help people bring ideas to life. The most
challenging aspect of my internship has been dealing with the different
personalities and perspectives when it comes to decision-making.

3. What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

I’ve seen certain aspects of the art world that people don’t necessarily
know exist. I’ve learned that ultimately everything really is a
business; that although you may have talent, success is really a product
     of drive, opportunity and intelligence.

4. How do you see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to
work on issues or with communities that matter to you?

My summer has been extremely meaningful. I’ve discovered my love of the
elderly community on a personal level. And now I’m in the process of
writing a grant proposal that would make it possible for the older
residents of Station North to take art classes next summer.

5. How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to
impact the world? This might involve skills you’ve gained, information
you’ve learned, mentors you’ve connected with, or projects you’ve
    completed.

I’ve learned the power of being from the same community you’re trying to
help. I’ve learned that I don’t need to go across the country or half
way around the world to make a positive impact in the world. Most of the
things I thought I needed to do to accomplish great things I already
have. I’m just humbled by being able to see how the community
    revitalization process really works.

Hack the Parks- Bringing the Community Together for Change

<Tagline>Do you have a solution to improve Baltimore City Parks?</Tagline>

Well-maintained city parks promote social health, improve neighborhood safety, and spur economic growth.

The power to make Baltimore's parks (and the city, as a whole) sustainable, livable and vibrant lies with us. So we are calling on the citizens of Baltimore to "hack" the city's parks. By hacking we mean, citizens develop their own applications (whether they be technology-based or not) which create simple, tangible benefits for the community.

gb.tc has partnered with the Mayor's Office of Information Technology and Baltimore's Department of Recreation and Parks to give Baltimoreans a real opportunity to change our urban green spaces. Updates on each project will be posted on this website, so the community can keep track of its progress.

At the end of the summer, there will be a celebration where presentations will be made on each project's success.

Hack the Parks is made possible with the support of
