Undergraduate Research Award
Katrina Bucci, of Glen Arm, MD was recently selected as one of two recipients of the 2023 Undergraduate Research Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22BC University of Maryland-University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UM-UMBC).
Each spring, the chapter's awards committee selects two applicants to receive $500 each for this prestigious honor on the recommendation of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) Committee.
Katrina was selected by the awards committee for her innovative research abstract and strong letter of support from her mentor, Fernando Vonhoff.

Title of research: Investigating Locomotion Decline in the Drosophila Model for Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by increased amyloid beta plaque formation. Lisinopril, a medication that lowers blood pressure, has been shown to decrease inflammatory processes and protein aggregation in aging flies. This study aimed to test the effect of lisinopril on the locomotion decline of Drosophila melanogaster, a model organism ideal for studying human diseases due to its short generation time, easy genetic manipulation, and conservation of disease-causing genes in humans. We used wild type flies and flies with the deletion of the APPL gene, the fly homolog of the Amyloid Precursor Protein associated with Alzheimer's disease, exposed to food with and without lisinopril supplementation during adulthood. The climbing rate of flies at two-, ten-, and thirty- days old was measured according to the time it took each fly to climb to two different distances on a serological pipette. Preliminary data show that lisinopril lacks a significant impact on slowing the locomotion decline of wild type and Alzheimer's flies as the climbing rate of the flies did not significantly change with the addition of lisinopril. We are currently testing whether neuroprotective functions of APPL are required for lisinopril to mediate its beneficial effects on aging flies.

Marilyn Demorest Love of Learning Award
Emerald Wilson of Largo, Maryland, was recently selected as the recipient of the 2023 Marilyn Demorest Love of Learning Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22BC University of Maryland-University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UM-UMBC).
Emerald was selected by the awards committee for her outstanding academic excellence and active participation within the university and the broader community.In particular, the committee was impressed by Meredith'sperseverance to succeed and to live life by the PKP Motto - Philosophia Kateito Photo - Let the Love of Learning Rule Humanity. Emerald is currently pursuing an MA in Learning and Performance Technology (LAPT).
Each spring, this chapter invites applications from its graduate student members. Two $500 awards will be distributed each year to the selected awardees. The Marilyn Demorest Love of Learning Award is bestowed in recognition of the many significant contributions made by Dr. Marilyn Demorest as a key founder and seminal leader of Chapter 22 UM-UMBC of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Demorest's clear-eyed determination, detailed planning, and appreciation of both tradition and innovation infused the infant chapter with the carefully-built scaffolding needed for it to grow into the chapter we enjoy today. Marilyn's dedication to PKP and her own love of learning are the foundation for this award.

Arjun Kanjarpane, of Clarksville, Maryland, was recently selected as the recipient of the 2023 Shirley C. Sorensen Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22BC University of Maryland-University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UM-UMBC).
Arjun was selected by the awards committee for his outstanding academic excellence and active participation within the university and the broader community. In particular, the committee was impressed by his perseverance to succeed and to serve others. Arjun is currently pursing a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Each spring, the UM-UMBC chapter invites applications from its undergraduate student members to apply for the $1,000 award. The Shirley C. Sorensen Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award is bestowed in recognition of the numerous contributions that Dr. Sorensen has made over many years to The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and especially to the former five-campus chapter, University of Maryland Chapter 22, which was chartered in 1920.

Title of Research: Creating An Asynchronous Optical Sampling-Based THz-Imaging System To Detect Defects On Metal Armor

Abstract:
The aim of this project was to use THz time-domain spectroscopy to non-destructively evaluate and identify corrosion and defects in the coatings of metal armor. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a spectroscopic technique in which a sample's properties and shape are examined using short pulses of terahertz radiation. Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) using Terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) has the potential to be used for a variety of applications including medical imaging, security screening, and in manufacturing. We used the asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) technique to obtain THz images of known metal and silicon calibration samples to determine and improve imaging resolution. We used time-of-flight measurements of both the samples and the substrate to form images of high contrast. Signal processing techniques like waveform smoothing and signal averaging as well as optimizing stage position helped create images with resolution as small as 1 mm. Further improvements in imaging techniques will help determine the remaining lifespan of coatings on an armor, providing a fast and reliable way of determining if the coating needs to be replaced and thus saving time and money.

Jess Sellner, of Baltimore, MD was recently selected as one of two recipients of the 2022 Undergraduate Research Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22BC University of Maryland-University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UM-UMBC).
Each spring, the chapter's awards committee selects two applicants to receive $500 each for this prestigious honor on the recommendation of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) Committee.
Jess was selected by the awards committee for her innovative research abstract and strong letter of support from her mentors, Camee Maddox-Wingfield and Bambi Chapin.

Title of research: Motivations For The Pursuit Of Ancestral Knowledge In Contemporary Baltimore, Maryland

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been an increased drive by individuals to seek ancestral knowledge and this study explores the nature of that rise. Related scholarship suggests that access to ancestral ways of knowing is sought by individuals attempting to shape and/or reclaim identity, decolonize thoughts and practices, reconnect with the land and preserve culture. An analysis of these pursuits may contribute to global conversations about climate change and systemic inequalities through the anthropological lens of cultural ecology and indigenous healing traditions. This research employs contextualizing literature, participant observation, interviewing and digital anthropological methods to explore the complex motivations of individuals seeking ancestral knowledge in the Baltimore, Maryland area. The study analyzes qualitative data gathered from two local groups with an interest in ancestral ways of knowing and a combined, active membership of about 150 persons to demonstrate the varied methods and motivations embodied by individuals seeking traditional solutions to contemporary problems

Reina Maeda, of Ellicott City, Maryland, was recently selected as the recipient of the 2022 Shirley C. Sorensen Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22BC University of Maryland-University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UM-UMBC).
Reina was selected by the awards committee for her outstanding academic excellence and active participation within the university and the broader community. In particular, the committee was impressed by her perseverance to succeed and to serve others. Reina is pursing a Bachelor's Degree in Financial Economics at UMBC.

Title of research: Using Natural Language Processing In Latinx to Study Culture Differences In Mental Health Stigmas On Social Media
Mentor: Michelle Kauffman, JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health, Behavior, and Society
Abstract:
Adolescents and young adults are prone to various types of mental distress, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health stigma prevents some adolescents from seeking treatments needed to cope with distress, particularly Latinx youth. However, there has been little research on how these youth discuss mental illness, what stigma-reduction messages resonate most, and the role of social media in these interactions. This study’s objective is to explore social media content posted by Latinx youth to determine 1) attitudes towards and stigma surrounding mental health and treatment, 2) messages they promote in regarding mental health, 3) and whether these aspects differ for posts in English or Spanish only and for bilingual users. Using natural language processing, we will collect publicly available social media content using relevant mental health-related keywords. We will filter the large data set to include topic models of relevance and language. With the filtered data, we will conduct a content analysis to identify themes in the posts by language. This project is highly innovative, as it brings an interdisciplinary approach to an important public health issue. We will use the study results to identify potential social media intervention approaches to improve mental health outcomes for Latinx youth.

2021 National Fellowship Nominee from Chapter 22BC
Viviana Angelini, of Palm Harbor, Florida, was selected to serve as the single nominee from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22BC University of Maryland-University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UM-UMBC) to compete at the national level for a Fellowship. This recognition comes with a $1000 chapter award and the opportunity to win additional funds at the national level.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards 54 Fellowships of $8,500 each, six at $20,000 each, and two at $35,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.
