<Title>Gtown ARCHES and SOM Virtual Info Session</Title>

    <p><span>The Office of Admissions and The Office of Diversity &amp; Inclusion at the Georgetown University School of Medicine would like to invite  students to participate in a virtual information session. </span></p>
    <br><p><span>During this webinar, students will have the opportunity to speak with an Admissions Officer, The Dean for Diversity &amp; Inclusion, and a current medical student to learn about GUSOM’s admissions process, philosophy, student life, international opportunities, service learning, and diversity initiatives.</span></p>
    <br><p><span>We will also give an overview of our summer pipeline program, the Academy for Research, Clinical, and Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES). ARCHES is offered to rising juniors and rising seniors interested in pursuing medicine or pre-health professions and will engage students in immersive research, clinical rotations, and service learning.</span></p>

    <span><p><strong>The Dean of Medical Education's Inaugural Academy for Research, Clinical, and Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES) </strong>is a six-week program for eight undergraduate students who are rising juniors and seniors interested in pursuing medical studies. <br></p>
    <p>All students are encouraged to apply, including those from backgrounds underrepresented in the health professions and those who identify as first-generation college students. </p>
    <p>This program will engage selected participants in:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>Clinical experience</li>
    <li>Guided research</li>
    <li>Immersive service at Georgetown University</li>
    <li>Greater DC community on issues of health equity</li>
    </ul>GUSOM ARCHES aims to strengthen the research and clinical skills of promising undergraduate students and prepare them for successful matriculation into medical school. <br><h3><span><u>Program Dates &amp; Benefits:</u></span></h3>

    <strong><span><br></span></strong><h4>The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. SHPEP, formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions.</h4>

    <h5><strong>Freshmen Mandatory PreHealth Advising meeting</strong></h5>
    <p>MANDATORY attendance is <span>required</span> at this group advising meeting for any current UMBC freshman or freshman-transfer student who is interested in attending medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school after graduating from UMBC.</p>
    <p>From a pre-health advising perspective, you should attend the Freshmen Mandatory Advising Meeting if:</p>
    <p>This is your first or second semester in college.<br><strong>or</strong><br>You are currently enrolled in CHEM 101 or CHEM 102 or BIOL 141 or BIOL 142.</p>
    <p>This meeting will address pre-professional specific advising issues for freshmen such as professional school prerequisite courses, grades, standardized exams, gaining research, clinical, and leadership experience. Between now and the meeting, freshmen should acquire a working knowledge of the information on the office’s website. All freshmen students interested in attending medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school after they graduate from UMBC, are required to attend.</p>
    <p>Pre-professional students have <a href="http://premed.umbc.edu/home/contact/departmental-advising/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">TWO advisors</a>–an Assigned Academic/Declared Major Advisor and a supplemental, pre-health advisor. Please read about the differences between your TWO advisors <a href="http://premed.umbc.edu/home/contact/departmental-advising/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>. It is strongly suggested that each student meet with their Assigned Academic/Declared Major Advisor prior to attending the pre-health group advising session.     <div>Military Medicine Pre-Health Fair</div>

    <div>A message from Uniformed Services University:</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We will be hosting a Military Medicine Pre-Health Fair on December 1st (Friday) from <span><span>1:00 to 4:00 PM</span></span> at the Gaylord National Harbor.  This Fair is being held in conjunction with the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS) meeting.  </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>In addition to military physicians, we will also be welcoming members of a variety of health professions, to include nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, dentists, optometrists, veterinarians, physical therapists, occupational therapists and more.  We will have plenary talks focusing on different military medical careers and we will also have medical simulation equipment on hand as well as trauma demonstrations.</div>

    <div>Members from USU and from Army, Navy, and Air Force HPSP will be on hand to answer questions, as will the military health care team members mentioned in the paragraph above.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>This meeting is free (the cost is covered by the military), and the only expense to attendees is parking.  For those wishing to attend, we ask that they sign up on the Google Form here.</div>

    <strong><span>Ideal for students who wish to pursue the combined MD-PhD degree</span></strong><span> (this program is run by the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program).</span>

    <li><span>10 weeks of independent research at either Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or The Rockefeller University (all in NYC).</span></li>
    <li><span>Present &amp; participate in weekly journal clubs</span></li>
    <li><span>Scrub into surgeries at New York Presbyterian Hospital.</span></li>
    <li><span>Give an oral, written and poster presentation of your research in front of your family (who are flown in for the event), friends and colleagues.</span></li>
    <li><span>Receive on going mentorship by your "Big Sib" (a current MD-PhD student), as well as weekly meetings with the Program's leadership.</span></li>
    <li><span>Receive a stipend of $4,300 (minus the cost of housing).</span></li>

    <span><p><strong>The Dean of Medical Education's Inaugural Academy for Research, Clinical, and Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES) </strong>is a six-week program for eight undergraduate students who are rising juniors and seniors interested in pursuing medical studies. <br></p>
    <p>All students are encouraged to apply, including those from backgrounds underrepresented in the health professions and those who identify as first-generation college students. </p>
    <p>This program will engage selected participants in:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>Clinical experience</li>
    <li>Guided research</li>
    <li>Immersive service at Georgetown University</li>
    <li>Greater DC community on issues of health equity</li>
    </ul>GUSOM ARCHES aims to strengthen the research and clinical skills of promising undergraduate students and prepare them for successful matriculation into medical school. <br><h3><span><u>Program Dates &amp; Benefits:</u></span></h3>

    <span>Summer Stipend: </span><span>$4,000 ($2,000 paid after the first 3 weeks - $2,000 paid conclusion of program)</span>

    <div>
    <span>Housing: </span><span>On-Campus housing at Georgetown University - Same gender identity, suite style, double-occupancy rooms</span>
    </div>

    <span>Travel: </span><span>Awarded up to $250 per student on a case by case basis by the Georgetown Office of Diversity &amp; Inclusion</span>

    <div><span><strong>**NOTE**</strong> Students are responsible for their own meals/food costs (except for program event meals provided by ARCHES)</span></div>
