The UMBC/BCCC Refugee Youth Project VISTA partnership has designed and implemented College JUMP (Journey Upward Mentoring Program), a college access initiative for refugees.

UMBC undergraduate students volunteer as near-peer mentors to 11th and 12th grade refugee students in Baltimore City and County. Mentors and mentees meet on a weekly basis to go over college exploration, application, and preparation. They also participate in monthly events and/or workshops, aimed to expose students to various aspects of college life. Ultimately, College JUMP strives to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to gain admission and free prepared for success in post-secondary institutions.

This mentorship will enable your students to interact with new members of their community and have a positive impact on the lives of new, refugee youth. We are currently looking for more mentors for our large group of eager mentees! We are asking that you share this amazing opportunity with your students. You will find the College JUMP informational video and two-page info sheet attached.

ScribeAmerica's Orthopedic Associates of Central Maryland

<Tagline>ScribeAmerica</Tagline>

My name is Mark Haft and I am the chief scribe for ScribeAmerica's Orthopedic Associates of Central Maryland locations. ScribeAmerica is a company that hires and trains “Scribes” for physicians. This email is to provide information about a truly unique employment opportunity for students interested in careers in medicine. Our company is currently looking to recruit students to work as Scribes in an outpatient orthopedic clinic in Catonsville, Columbia, and Eldersburg. The scribe will work one on one with board certified orthopedic surgeons assisting with documentation for each patient evaluated by the doctor. It is an exceptional opportunity for any student interested in medicine to gain first-hand experience following a physician in an outpatient clinic setting.

The role of a scribe is to closely collaborate with their assigned physician by documenting the history of each patient evaluated, the doctor’s physical examination, the results of laboratory/radiological studies ordered, and the eventual diagnosis and disposition. Becoming a scribe provides the student with first rate exposure to medical terminology, disease processes, emergency procedures, medications, and the medical decision making process performed by physicians.

This job is not for everyone; the complexity of the material and fast-paced environment necessitate that only the sharpest and most motivated students succeed as a scribe. We are looking for dependable and hard working employees that have a desire for an eventual career in medicine, or are interested in learning more about careers in medicine. We offer day shifts which consists of following a single physician, usually lasting 8-10 hours. It is expected that each scribe can commit to 2 shifts per week for at least 1-2 years.

Paid classroom & clinical training is provided. The training is extensive and intense. Each employee will have multiple training sessions both in the classroom and on the floor of clinic during which we teach the flow of the clinic, extensive medical terminology, and appropriate medical/legal documentation.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to forward this email to any of your students that are interested in careers in medicine, or any students with an interest in learning more about medicine. This is a unique and exciting opportunity which has demonstrated itself to be excellent experience for students preparing for careers in medicine. Our past employees that excelled as scribes have gone on to receive outstanding evaluations in their clinical trials and residencies. Candidates interested should email me their resume and can apply at www.scribeamerica.com/apply.

Please contact me if you have any questions about our program.

Odyssey MCAT program

The Odyssey Program at Johns Hopkins University has been offering an MCAT Review each year for many years to help students prepare for the test, and have fine-tuned the course for the new MCAT2015. We wanted to make you aware of this review being offered this May/June on the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins. Please feel free to share the attached information with students who may benefit from the course. As you can see from the attached information, the instructors are actually faculty (not medical students!), each with considerable experience in their fields and how to prepare students to take standardize tests in their areas of expertise.

If you think there are students looking to take the MCAT in the coming year and have not yet made their study plans, this may be a good alternative to a traditional commercial review course. Thanks for your help in getting the word out!
