Legal Aspects of Information Systems (IS 474) is an introductory law course for students planning careers in Information Systems or other technology-focused fields.  No prior knowledge of law is necessary. 

This is also a great course for pre-law students interested in learning more about legal issues in music and entertainment, as well as contract negotiation.

  • Students will learn what the law is, and how to analyze legal issues in interesting contexts, including music and entertainment.  
  • For the end-of-semester project, students will analyze a legal topic in the context of a business or industry they find interesting, and present their work in a creative way.  
  • Students enrolled in this course have examined legal issues relating to YouTubers, fast fashion, cover music, athlete endorsements, anime, influencers and models, and sneakers.  You can see their work here.

Pre-requisites: IS 300 or IS 300H with a C or better, or waiver from instructor.

On Wednesday, May 3, UMBC's Center for Democracy and Civic Life, Office of Government Relations and Community Affairs, and Student Government Association will host Changing Maryland. 

This free catered dinner program will take place from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Apartment Community Center Multipurpose Room. 

Members of the UMBC community will meet state leaders, learn about issues that were addressed in the 2023 legislative session, and discuss how UMBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni can get involved in shaping legislation in Annapolis.

(Paul, Weiss), is launching a new Future Leaders in Law pre-law fellowship program to encourage and help prepare interested college students with a range of lived experiences, primarily individuals from first-generation and less advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, to apply for admission to law schools around the nation.

This program will be fully funded, with all costs covered to participate, including transportation and lodging, and preparation materials.  

Need-based assistance is available for law school application fees and LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (CAS) reports, and the LSAT administration.  In addition, a $3,000 stipend will be awarded upon program completion. 

College juniors and seniors, or recent college or university graduates, with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher and an interest in applying to law school in 2024 and enrolling in fall 2025, are eligible to apply.  

Application Deadline:  April 30, 2023, at 11:59 EDT

UMBC Pre-Law Society is hosting a virtual Law School Admissions Panel! 

On Wednesday, April 19th from 6:00-8:00 PM, admissions officers from schools including Maryland Carey Law, Georgetown Law, and UCLA Law will answer your questions about the law school admissions process, law school, and the LSAT!
