At November 6th's meeting, Avi Newman, Medical Brigade Treasurer of Global Brigades came to talk about an exciting opportunity for pre-health students. 

  • Global Brigades is non profit student organization to volunteer to help underserved countries to help close economic and health disparities

  • this spring break, they are going to guatemala going from March 14th to March 29th at a $1600 to $1800 cost per person

  • most pre-health students go on the combined Dental and Medical Brigade

  • some of the skills students get to learn and practice are: intake, medical consultation, shadowing, and data informatics

  • other benefits of the trip include excursions, the chance to experience local culture, good food, and PRAC 096 credit

  • the signup process is underway right now

Shortly thereafter, Aarsh Sheth, vice president of the Pre-Medical Society spoke about extracurriculars for pre-medical students. 

  • anything outside of academic requirements counts as an extracurricular activity

  • the most common kinds of extracurriculars are philanthropic (community service), social (involvement in student organizations, greek life, sports or similar activities) or more professional in nature (internships, research, work)

  • medical schools value these activities because they help develop your social skills, critical thinking, service orientation, and  the other fifteen core competencies (as outlined by the AAMC)

  • most competitive applicants have activities such as: research, clinical-related exposure, community service, and leadership from extracurricular involvement

  • you can find many extracurricular opportunities at hospitals, nursing homes, non-profits, and libraries 

  • the Shriver Center is probably the easiest way to find service opportunities; additionally, there are also lots of hospitals to volunteer at around UMBC, including in Baltimore and Washington DC

  • an outstanding way to prove your leadership ability is to start an organization

  • make sure that when you do service you "champion a cause" 

  • it is also important to have a lot of varied clinical experience

  • research is important into helping build relationships and gaining experience, but make sure that it is regarding something that you enjoy 

  • it is important to enjoy and be passionate about the extracurriculars you choose: not only do they shape your undergraduate experience, but they eventually shape your applications and will help you to tailor your choices when choosing schools that you will apply to

During today's meeting Katerra Snead from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, came into talk about the University's School of Podiatric Medicine. Details from the presentation consisted of:
  • a summary of podiatry, a health science which focuses on the foot and ankle
  • the layout/track of classes for students: a 7 year commitment (similar to allopathic medicine) consisting of 4 years of podiatric medical school and 3-4 years of residency
  • the wide range of podiatric specialties in many fields, such as: surgery, sports medicine, dermatology
  • the research opportunities available to students many of whom publish their work in journals
  • the accommodating and well-paying lifestyle of podiatry
  • admission requirements, which are similar to most other medical schools; however experience shadowing a podiatrist is required
  • their resources for experience, such as the Foot and Ankle institute, and a Clinical Skills Lab
  • some shadowing opportunities in the summer and winter through their Winter and Summer Internship Program
  • a more in-depth session on podiatry on November 16th at their pre-health open house

At this Wednesday's meeting, Whitney Porter, the Director of Admissions at Lincoln Memorial University's DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine came in to give an overview of the osteopathic medicine program at the university. Some main points included:
  • differences/similarities between DO and MD
  • the campus locations in Harrogate, and Knoxville, TN that allows the college to better connect to the community and its mission to treat medically underserved populations, while providing more resources to students
  • details on the newer facilities on the recently-built Knoxville campus 
  • the college's commitment to DOs who are driven to serve humanity
  • a collaborative class structure with an emphasis on discussion-based learning
  • holistic education with a focus on good patient interaction through thorough training and simulations
  • a breakdown of the two phases of education: pre-clinical sciences and clinical experiences
  • resources provided to students, such as virtual classes and state-of-the-art anatomical models
  • details on opportunities and preparation for residency
  • other supplemental programs available to students, such as the Anatomy/OPP Scholars Program, which gives students more opportunities so apply their knowledge and have leadership positions
  • admissions requirements, which includes GPA, MCAT scores, clinical experience, and a commitment to service
  • collaborative student culture

Involvement Fest is this Monday, September 9th from 12-2PM in the RAC and we will be there to talk about our club, upcoming events and to answer all of your questions, so be sure to stop by!


Additionally, our first general body meeting will be this Wednesday, September 11th from 12-1PM in ITE102. In this meeting, we will have a meet and greet with the club officers and members, a quick Q&A and an overview of the club's plan for the semester.
