State Health Benefits Open Enrollment
Enroll between Oct. 16 and Nov. 9
Dear Colleagues,
Open Enrollment for State Health Benefits begins today, October 16, and will be open through 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 9. Employees who are not making any health benefit changes do not need to take action. However, if you wish to continue a healthcare and/or dependent daycare flexible spending account (FSA), you must re-enroll in your Open Enrollment event.
During Open Enrollment, employees can enroll in and/or make changes to their health benefits to become effective on January 1, 2024. The State of Maryland will send out important emails via the SPS Workday system (
stateofmaryland@myworkday.com) regarding Open Enrollment.
Open Enrollment will continue to be online in the SPS Workday system. For more information on the SPS Workday system, employees should visit the HR website for
detailed instructions on accessing their Workday account. Discover incentives and find out what's new for the State's 2024
Wellness Program.
We are pleased to announce that all existing plans and vendors will remain in place for 2024. However, the State has passed along rate changes that will impact the medical, prescription, and dental plans in 2024. CareFirst, United Healthcare, and Kaiser medical plan rates will increase approximately 9.5 percent. CVS Caremark Prescription plan rates will increase 9 percent. Dental plan rates will increase 9.5 percent. The State MetLife term life insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverages will experience no rate increases in 2024. Open Enrollment rates and materials are posted on the
HR Open Enrollment website.
Also new for 2024: Employees can now enroll eligible
Domestic Partners and their dependents during Open Enrollment. The effective date of coverage will be January 1, 2024. Employees must enroll and submit documentation for their Domestic Partners and their dependents during Open Enrollment. More information about the documentation required will soon be available on the
HR Open Enrollment website.
The Human Resources Benefits team will host a live, virtual Open Enrollment Information Session via Webex on
October 18 at 10 a.m. Employees who are unable to attend the live session will be able to view a recording that will be posted on the
Virtual Resources page on or around October 27.

Taste of Maryland - Almost Sold Out
Sunday, October 8 from 4 - 6:30 p.m. at the Retriever Soccer Park
Join us for a Maryland-themed dinner event featuring steamed crabs, pit beef, Smith Island cake, crab dip, and so much more. Receive a complimentary ticket to watch the women's soccer game with your Taste of Maryland ticket.
Ticket Prices:
- $45 per person (does not include crabs)
- $25 for children 17 and under (does not include crabs)
- $65 per person (includes crabs) for all ages.
Staff and Faculty Social

The only staff and faculty exclusive homecoming event!

Retriever 5k Dawg Chase and Fun Run
Saturday, October 14 from 8:30 - 10 a.m. in the Library Plaza
Whether you're in it for some friendly competition or would rather stick with a group, this event's emphasis is on camaraderie, bringing together all paces and styles. The 5k and 1-mile routes both start and end at the Albin O. Kuhn Library. The 1-mile route will be leisurely and casually paced (pets and families encouraged).
Entry Fee: $20 for individuals or $50 for a family pack option (two adults and any number of children). Students are free.

Behavioral Risk Assessment and Consultation Team Update

Dear UMBC Colleague:
UMBC is a community that cares for students, staff, and faculty. We want to thank you for your ongoing partnership and compassion in supporting the safety and well-being of everyone on our campus, especially our students.
The UMBC Behavioral Risk Assessment and Consultation Team (BRACT) is a multidisciplinary team that examines reports of concern to assist in maintaining campus safety. The team assists faculty, staff, and students with situations and behaviors that are concerning, disruptive, and/or threatening as well as the support and resources needed to ensure continued success on campus.
Each department will receive our updated BRACT Poster and a BRACT sticker to share with all staff members that includes a link to the Student Affairs website and BRACT information, including the BRACT folder (UMBC Faculty and Staff Guide for Helping a Person in Distress).
Student Affairs also offers a Retriever Peer-to-Peer listening program as well as training designed to give community members tools to help when someone is struggling with a mental health or substance use challenge. Mental Health First Aid is a 1-day skills-based course that helps identify and respond to mental health and substance use challenges. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a 1.5-2 hour training course that teaches how to talk to someone who may be thinking about suicide and encourage them to get the help they need to prevent suicide.

State Health Benefits Open Enrollment
October 16 - November 9, 2023
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that this year's Open Enrollment for State of Maryland benefits will be
online in SPS Workday from Monday, October 16, 2023, through Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 5 p.m. During this time, eligible employees can enroll, cancel, or make changes to their health benefits, with all updates becoming effective January 1, 2024. Employees will receive alerts regarding Open Enrollment from the State of Maryland via the SPS Workday system (
stateofmaryland@myworkday.com).
This year, we will share
virtual Open Enrollment resources on the
HR Open Enrollment website as they become available from the State of Maryland. Resources will include Open Enrollment videos, virtual information session dates with the State vendors, State Wellness information, and links to the 2024 Benefits Guide and Rates.
Prior to the start of Open Enrollment, it is important that employees gain access to their Workday account using the OneLogin process. Instructions can be found
here.
Also, for employees who are adding
new dependents to their health benefits during Open Enrollment, please review the
required dependent documentation. Dependent documentation is required to be attached to the Open Enrollment event by Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 5 p.m.
Finally, to ensure timely receipt of vendor communication, including membership cards, we encourage employees to confirm or correct their home addresses by logging into their myUMBC Profiles (under
About, and select
View More). Address updates/changes can be made in the employee's online account with the
Payroll Online Service Center (POSC).

Supporting Faculty/Staff in Navigating and Leading Change
HR offering new sessions Oct. 18-25 from FranklinCovey
Dear Colleagues,
It was leadership development expert John Maxwell who said: "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional." We all experience changes in our lifetime; how we choose to respond is up to us. Here at UMBC, we have already seen changes taking place on our campus as well as continuing changes to the evolving landscape of higher education itself. We understand that periods of transition can pose both challenges and opportunities for us personally, professionally, and organizationally. In order to be effective in our work, it is imperative that we equip ourselves with the knowledge, strategies, and a common language to understand, cope with, and adapt to change.
As we considered the challenge of supporting change, it became obvious that we needed a whole-system support structure that could be scaled up on campus quickly to address current and future needs. To that end, we have partnered with a respected leader in the field of change management, FranklinCovey, to launch one of their signature programs--
Change: How to Turn Uncertainty Into Opportunity. This course includes a series of change modules for individual contributors and campus supervisors (managers and leaders) on navigating and leading change. The FranklinCovey team will
facilitate campus sessions from October 18 - 25. See the attached flyer with session information as well as the program flyer from FranklinCovey detailing information on their change model and modules.
These experiential, engaging sessions address the multifaceted nature of change, offering insights, tools, and practical strategies that will empower you to thrive during times of transition.
Our hope is to offer this experience to as many faculty and staff as possible during this time frame, but space is limited. Given our commitment to extend this learning experience to everyone, we are also investing in 50 divisional representatives who will be designated as "Change Champions." These individuals will receive certification during the October timeframe to teach this FranklinCovey program and provide change support to staff within their division. I strongly encourage you to make the most of this opportunity and be part of these sessions. Together, we can embrace change as a catalyst for growth and innovation.
