We know that for decades, Baltimore has struggled to grow. The loss of people and investment has prompted the city to pursue a risky strategy of effectively paying developers to build. Using incentives with innocuous sounding acronyms like TIFs and PILOTs, new construction in the city has occurred largely at the expense of the city's working class. Meanwhile, despite the promises that incentives would reverse the city's decline, Baltimore continues to lose population.

How did we get here? Why is Baltimore the only jurisdiction in the state that must pay for development? And is there a better way to grow a city? These are just a few of the questions that Tax Broke, the documentary seeks to answer. The film-- five years in the making-- explores the history of the city's fraught relationship with artificially imposed boundaries, codified segregation, and finally a political economy fueled by hundreds of millions of dollars in tax incentives doled out behind closed doors.

After the screening there will be a panel discussion with Char McCready, Executive Director of Citizens Planning and Housing Association (CPHA); Nicole King, Associate Professor of American Studies, UMBC; Nneka N'namdi, Founder and Executive Director, Fight Blight BMore. Taya Graham, Real News Reporter and producer, and Stephen Janis, Real News Reporter and director.

Project teams will meet in person for 30 hours per week for 4 weeks during SummerSession One: Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm from Friday, June 2nd - Friday, June 30.

Open to all majors, this is an excellent opportunity for students in STEM fields to learn to tell effective stories and for students in social science and humanities fields to gain research and technical skills. Interdisciplinary teams will integrate narrative-based research and professional skills to create effective stories about UMBC's campus, our larger communities, and our lives. Participants receive a $3000 stipend and a scholarship that covers the cost of the 3-credit internship course. At the conclusion of the project, participants will receive a letter describing their contributions, which they can list on their resumes. Additionally, students have an opportunity to earn a Digital Badge in Interdisciplinary Collaboration.

The Department of American Studies invites applications for the American Studies Undergraduate Student Grant for students who are majoring in American Studies or minoring in Public Humanities or Asian American Studies to apply for a research grant and/or professional development grant in the amount of $500.

Eligibility:
Undergraduate students enrolled at UMBC who are majoring in American Studies or minoring in Public Humanities or Asian American Studies programs. 

Grants may be used for the following purposes. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list and we are open to hearing your ideas for how this fund can support your work and development:

  •  Funding to support an Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) submission or presentation
  •  Funding to support materials for an independent research project or independent study
  • Funding to support a capstone project in American Studies 490
  • Funding to support original research in public humanities or Asian American studies
  • Funding to support an unpaid internship
  • Funding to support regular coursework
  • Professional Development (including but not limited to LSAT or GRE prep courses and other professional degree preparation coursework)
Application process:
To apply, send an email to the department chair, Professor Tamara Bhalla (tbhalla@umcb.edu), and the program management specialist, Morgan Dowty (morgando@umbc.edu) and cc your faculty mentor with the subject line: AMST Undergraduate Student Grant Application.

In the email:
  • Describe in 100-150 words what you propose to use the funding to support.
  • Be as specific as you can: please explain what the funds will be used for and what they will be supporting.
  • Tell us what time frame you will need to expend the funds.
  • Identify a faculty mentor in the department who will support you in your use of the funds.
Be sure to ask them prior to submitting your application. Do not presume your professor or advisor will support you without asking.

Funding Cycle and Deadlines:
  • For the 2022-2023 academic year, we will accept proposals on a rolling basis.
  • For the 2023-2024 academic year, we will accept proposals until Dec 1, 2023.

Attention all UMBC students:

A graduate student in the Department of Geography & Environmental Systems is sponsoring a survey that looks to understand how students comprehend waste, climate change and environmental justice. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and is for UMBC graduate and undergraduate students.

The goal of the project is to see if students make connections between environmental justice, waste and climate change at universities. By understanding if those connections are made we hope to look at how to utilize power to make changes surrounding waste and environmental justice at UMBC.

The application link is provided here and is due on 1/31/23 by 11:59 PM. A cohort of 11 fellows will be selected in February 2023 and each fellow will receive a $3,000 stipend.

BFS Fellow responsibilities:

1. Attend the Baltimore Field School 2.0 event in Spring 2023.

Join Black Yield Institute in creating a short video about your Food Story! You might be thinking "what's a food story?" or "I don't know if I have one," but we promise you - everyone has a food story and they're connected to our families, our communities, and the bigger story of our food system and our liberation! The story you create will be 100% yours and you'll gain some video-making skills to apply to other projects. We plan to include some of the digital stories (with storyteller permission and credit) on a forthcoming BYI web platform. We intend to center themes of the Black experience as they relate to food, foodways, and the African-diaspora but all are welcome to join the workshop and learn the skills.

Archival Silent NOISE considers the invisible, ignored, and silenced areas of our artistic disciplines.  By exploring approaches to re-visibilizing and reimagining the archives of our disciplines in the field and in the classroom, Archival Silent Noise will create a space to honor and generate joyful noise and good trouble.  Submissions from any academic and artistic discipline are welcome. We also invite professionals in nonacademic settings to submit proposals. We are looking for proposals for panel discussions, workshops, conversations, papers, essays, happenings, and artistic presentations.

Professor's Dr. Kalima Young (EMF) and Ada Pinkston (Arts Education) have been selected to be Towson University's new College of Fine Arts and Communications Co-Lab Directors from 2021- 2024.
