Do you have an interest in history or working in archives?
The Maryland State Archives is looking for interns to work on the attached three projects: Venice Beach Community, Women’s Civic League, and The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland collections.
The goal of each project is to process Maryland State Archives collections to make them more discoverable and accessible to the general public through in person visits or online.
If you are an American Studies, Public Humanities, History, Africana Studies, Gender & Women's Studies student, or know a student who is, apply and speak with your advisor about using this internship for academic credits!

Baltimore’s Historic Sharp-Leadenhall Neighborhood
Presented by Betty Bland-Thomas
Ms. Bland-Thomas is a neighborhood historian and community activist who preserves the history of Sharp-Leadenhall. The neighborhood is located between M&TBank Stadium and Federal Hill, in historic South Baltimore. It was established by formerly enslaved residents and German immigrants about 1790 and is rich with African American history. The community was home to significant churches, the Baltimore Abolitionist Society and the African Academy of Baltimore.

“Doing Queer History in Public” — Baltimore’s LGBTQ+ history
Presented by Kate Drabinski, Ph.D.
Dr. Kate Drabinski is Principal Lecturer of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She is also the Director of the Women Involved in Learning and Leadership (WILL+) program, a co-curricular program and Living-Learning community sponsored by GWST. Her research interests include transgender studies, critical pedagogy, public history, and theories of activism. She is on the Editorial Board of the journal Radical Teacher and the Baltimore Heritage LGBT History Committee.

An Exploration of Baltimore's Arts, Culture & Health Efforts from 1968-2023”
Presented by David O. Fakunle, Ph.D.
Dr. Fakunle serves as Assistant Professor in the Public Health Program at the Morgan State University School of Community Health & Policy, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Florida Center for Arts in Medicine, and Associate Faculty in the Mental Health department of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His interests include stressors within the built environment, societal manifestations of racism, and the use of arts and culture to strengthen health, equity and ultimately, liberation.

Joyce J. Scott is a Baltimore multidisciplinary artist and a MacArthur Fellow who holds three honorary doctorates from institutions including the Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Institute College of Art. A 50-year retrospective of her work is on exhibition March 24 - July 15 at The Baltimore Museum of Art: Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams, curated by Cecilia Wichmann and Catharina Manchanda.

Apply for the American Studies Undergraduate Student Grant!
Accepting Proposals on a Rolling Basis
The Department of American Studies invites applications for the American Studies Undergraduate Student Grant for students who are majoring in American Studies or minoring in Public Humanities or Asian American Studies to apply for a research grant and/or professional development grant in the amount of $500.
Eligibility:
Undergraduate students enrolled at UMBC who are majoring in American Studies or minoring in Public Humanities or Asian American Studies programs.
Grants may be used for the following purposes. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list and we are open to hearing your ideas for how this fund can support your work and development:
-
Funding to support an Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) submission or presentation
- Funding to support materials for an independent research project or independent study
- Funding to support a capstone project in American Studies 490
- Funding to support original research in public humanities or Asian American studies
- Funding to support an unpaid internship
- Funding to support regular coursework
- Professional Development (including but not limited to LSAT or GRE prep courses and other professional degree preparation coursework)
Application process:
To apply, send an email to the department chair, Professor Tamara Bhalla (
tbhalla@umcb.edu),
and the program management specialist, Morgan Dowty (morgando@umbc.edu) and cc your faculty mentor with the subject line: AMST Undergraduate Student Grant Application.
In the email:
- Describe in 100-150 words what you propose to use the funding to support.
- Be as specific as you can: please explain what the funds will be used for and what they will be supporting.
- Tell us what time frame you will need to expend the funds.
- Identify a faculty mentor in the department who will support you in your use of the funds.
Be sure to ask them prior to submitting your application. Do not presume your professor or advisor will support you without asking.
Funding Cycle and Deadlines:
- For the 2023-2024 academic year, we will accept proposals on a rolling basis.
This grant was made possible through generous donations from Sheldon and Jamie Caplis and Dr. Patrice McDermott. Mr Caplis served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement from 1993 to 2008 and Dr. McDermott is the former Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (and previously served as chair and associate professor in American Studies).
