Baltimore Field School 2.0 Fellowship Application Due: 1/31/23

Please apply for and/or help spread the word about the Baltimore Field School (BFS) 2.0 application. Sponsored by American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Sustaining Public Engagement Grants, BFS 2.0 seeks to create a model of ethical humanities research and teaching in Baltimore and cities like it. The Baltimore Field School 2.0 is the second iteration of a planning intensive focusing on building collaborative public humanities projects and developing the field school programming with our 8 Community Fellows.

The BFS 2.0 application is open to all UMBC graduate students, full-time staff, and full-time faculty. Preference will be given to untenured/assistant professors to support early career work in public humanities.

The application link is provided here and is due on 1/31/23 by 11:59 PM. A cohort of 11 fellows will be selected in February 2023 and each fellow will receive a $3,000 stipend.

BFS Fellow responsibilities:

1. Attend the Baltimore Field School 2.0 event in Spring 2023.

2. Attend the summer institute for one week in July 2023. The in-person institute will offer meetings, panels, and work sessions and optional programming and events with community partners.
3. Attend a reconvening for one day in September.
4. Give feedback on the project through a pre- and post-evaluation and submit suggestions for future programming.

BFS Fellows should bring interest in or an idea for a public humanities project and/or course focusing on the Baltimore area. Fellows should be interested in discussing and developing ethical methods for public humanities work.

Our Community Fellows were selected in June 2022 and will play an integral role in the selection of and programming for the BFS Fellows.

Baltimore Field School 2.0 creates a framework for UMBC graduate students, staff, and faculty to collaborate with community partners in building ethical and sustainable research and teaching projects focused on public humanities. The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has awarded a public engagement grant of over $150,000 to support Baltimore Field School (BFS) 2.0: Undoing & Doing Anew in Public Humanities. The award will further develop a planning intensive that moves away from extractive research models and helps build ongoing Baltimore-based humanities projects. The grant will fund collaborative projects developed with community fellows and will focus on food and land justice, racial equity, and journalism/public information. As part of UMBC's Public Humanities program, the innovative field school and community fellows project is led by Sarah Fouts (principal investigator), Nicole King (co-investigator), Jasmine Braswell (project coordinator), and Tahira Mahdi (evaluator). The award will broaden the reach of the Baltimore Field School (BFS), launched through a $125,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2020.

Today we proudly announce our new cohort of eight Community Fellows:

Betty Bland-Thomas of South Baltimore Partnership. Bland-Thomas will work with Courtney Hobson.
Yesenia Mejia of Creative Alliance. Yesenia will work with Tania Lizarazo.
Curtis Eaddy II of Presidential Brands. Curtis will work with Bill Shewbridge.
Eddie Conway and Cameron Granadino of Real News Network. Eddie and Cameron will work with Beth Saunders.

Eleven UMBC graduate students, staff, and junior faculty in the social sciences and humanities will receive a $3,000 stipend for their participation in the Baltimore Field School 2.0 in Summer 2023. Applications for this workshop will open in December 2022.

Imagining Otherwise: Strategies for Teaching and Learning Abolition

The logics of crime and punishment are so deeply embedded for most of us that it is hard to think of any alternatives. Carceral logics shape everything from the attendance and late policies on our syllabi to our responses to fear and harm. How do we learn to imagine otherwise? In this presentation, Dr. Kate Drabinski will share strategies from her teaching about prisons, prison abolition, and social movements that build toward that horizon. She will also raise questions about how we might start building anti-carceral logics into our classes to nurture this work on a wider scale.

In the first half of this course, students will discuss readings and learn about a range of ethnographic data collection methods, while considering ethical issues involved in ethnographic research. The second half of the course will be co-taught with Fernando López, a New Orleans-based cultural documentarian, and we will engage in further inquiry of fieldwork as we apply qualitative research approaches to a Baltimore-based documentary project with Mera Kitchen Collective, a cooperative run by immigrant and refugee women.
