<Title>Postdoctoral position in Quantum Computing at UMBC</Title>

    <p>The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMBC invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Mathematics, beginning Fall 2026. We particularly welcome candidates with research interests in Quantum Computing, Optimization, Operations Research, and Numerical Linear Algebra.</p>
    <p>This is a one-year appointment beginning in Fall 2026, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, or related field by the start date. The successful candidate will pursue an active research program, collaborate with faculty, and seek external funding. An option for teaching classes in addition to the above responsibilities also exists.</p>

<Title>QSI to co-host 2-Day Workshop on Complex Quantum Systems!</Title>

    <p>QSI is pleased to announce that we will co-Host the <strong>Workshop on Natural and Engineered Complex Quantum Systems</strong>, to be held on May 26–27, 2026 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).</p>
    <p>This two-day in-person workshop (~40 participants) brings together researchers from quantum information science, quantum chemistry, and quantum thermodynamics to explore the interplay between energetics and information processing in complex molecular systems — from the thermodynamic stability of molecular qubits to quantum simulation of thermodynamic systems. </p>
    <p>We kindly ask that you share this announcement with your colleagues, friends, or anyone who might be interested in the interface of quantum information, molecular science and thermodynamics. </p>
    <p> Confirmed Invited Speakers:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>Stephen Hill (Florida State University)</li>
    <li>Ignacio Franco (University of Rochester)</li>
    </ul>
    <p><u>Topics include:</u> equilibrium and non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics; quantum correlations in molecular systems, quantum information scrambling, heat dissipation in molecular systems, molecular qubits, and more.</p>
    <p><u>Call for Contributions:</u> We invite abstract submissions for contributed talks and poster presentations. <Title>Undergraduate research opportunities in quantum photonics</Title>

    <p>The UMBC Quantum Science Institute (QSI) in conjunction with the Quantum Photonics Integrated Design Center (QuPIDC), a DOE Energy Frontier Research Center in which UMBC is a partner, invite undergraduate applications to its undergraduate research internship program. The experience is designed to provide research experience for students who are interested in the broad topic of quantum information science.</p>
    <p>Students are expected to complete a research project under the supervision of a QSI faculty member for approximately 10 hours a week during the Spring semester. Students will have the opportunity to interact with students and faculty from QuPIDC partner institutions, including Purdue University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, North Carolina State University, Northwestern University, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, the University of Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech.</p>
    <p>The program runs during the Summer session. A stipend will be provided, with the total amount determined by the number of hours committed to the research program. </p>
    <p><strong>Interested students should contact Dr. Matthew Pelton at <a href="mailto:mpelton@umbc.edu">mpelton@umbc.edu</a>.</strong></p>
    <p>Candidates will be expected to identify a QSI faculty member who can serve as their research supervisor and to prepare a brief research proposal with the assistance of their supervisor.</p>

    <div class="html-content">Dr. Todd Pittman, Director of UMBC's Quantum Science Institute and Professor of Physics, gave a lively and accessible public lecture on November 12, 2025, at the Baltimore County Public Library's Perry Hall Branch. Community members of all ages gathered to hear Dr. Pittman trace the surprising history of quantum mechanics and quantum entanglement—from its early conceptual debates to groundbreaking experiments and Nobel Prize–winning discoveries.<div>
    <br>Dr. Pittman also highlighted UMBC's influential role in advancing the field, including foundational contributions by Morton Rubin, James Franson, and Yanhua Shih. His enthusiasm for the subject was unmistakable, and his approachable style encouraged a remarkably long Q&amp;A session—more than thirty minutes of thoughtful, challenging questions that ranged from the fundamentals of quantum mechanics to modern implementations and the future possibilities of quantum science.</div>

    <br>It was an engaging evening that left attendees with a deeper appreciation of both the mystery and the impact of quantum physics.<div><em><br></em></div>
