Openings for Summer Orientation Advisors

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY from June through August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for:
Graduate students, full-time faculty, and part-time faculty are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening session; full-time faculty are compensated through a budget transfer to their departments. Staff are not eligible for additional compensation, as Orientation occurs during work hours; if given permission to participate, this is an excellent opportunity for professional development.

Staff are especially encouraged to apply. As Orientation normally happens during business hours, we cannot compensate you separately for Orientation Advising activities, but request that you be excused from other duties to make time for advising. Even participating for just two or three days over the Summer is a help to us, requires only a few hours of your time in total, can be a big benefit to your department, and to you directly!

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just MIGHT be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid! UMBC's Retriever Essentials and Parking Services are working together once again for our second Food for Fines campaign.


What is Food for Fines? A program created to collect food and toiletries for UMBC students facing food insecurity. The program runs from April 3-14 with a goal of helping as many students as possible.


How does it work? From April 3-14, simply bring in five or more items from the most needed items list (attached) and we will reduce one active citation to a warning (the citation must be $40 or less). Previously paid citations are not eligible. All donations must be made at the Parking Services offices from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, by April 14. 


Don't have any citations? We are happy to accept any and all donations. We just ask that your items be unopened and non-expired. 


College is hard enough to manage without dealing with hunger. Your help can mean so much.

Do you think you have what it takes to be @umbcdining and Retriever Essentials' UMBCooking champion? Anyone can participate from a student org, club, alumni group, or even a group of friends! Sign up here with your best recipes! More details below.


Details: Each team will consist of 3-4 individuals and you will be able to compete for a panel of judges in a live cooking competition. We supply the ingredients, you supply the chefs! You will have until Sunday, March 26th, 2023 at 10:00pm to sign up! Selected teams will compete in person at True Grits on Tuesday, May 2nd from 5-7 PM for a panel of judges.

Qualification: Your team must submit two dishes! You don't have to cook these for us, but your recipes' creativity, detail, ingredients, how tasty they sounds, and your use of a Retriever Essentials ingredient will determine if you compete on May 2nd! For a further understanding, see the link in our bio.

Selection Period: We will be selecting teams the moment the sign up ends and we will let you know in an announcement on myUMBC March 31st, 2023. The announcement will have team names, recipe titles, date of the competition. We will also personally email you as well to make sure you get the message! 3 teams will be selected and they will have a chance to cook their two dishes for our judges in the main event!

!!The day your teams will compete is May 2nd of this semester from 5:00 to 7:00 PM!!

Prizes: Prizes will include your dish being featured one day in the True Grits Dining Hall menu with the option to cook it with SVC staff, gift cards to local participating restaurants and other places, and potentially some other prizes that will be very, very, VERY intriguing.
