Hi Student Org Officers!

Happy Tuesday! Below are the abstracts you can register to attend for LeadingOrgs on Saturday, August 22nd from 10 am - 4pm. As a reminder, each org should have one representative from their org attend at least one of the sessions. As a reminder participation in LeadingOrgs is required of each club at UMBC.

Please complete the registration link for your club here!

Available sessions:

Community Is Not Cancelled: Building Meaningful Connections in Virtual Spaces

10:00 am - 11:00 am

Presenters: David Hoffman and Romy Hübler

Abstract: Student organizations are UMBC’s most important resource for building community and supporting students’ sense of belonging. During this most challenging semester students have ever faced, student organizations’ role is going to be more necessary than ever. But how will you be able to build community while forced to maintain physical distance? This session will focus on tools and techniques you can use to support and deepen your members’ engagement with your group, relationships with each other, and sense of connection to UMBC.

Identity Conscious Leadership: Identity Development & Creating Equitable Spaces

11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Presenters: Carlos A. Turcios and Erin Waddles

Abstract: Racial, ethnic, and gender diversity are some of the characteristics that make UMBC a unique campus. As the United States continues to grapple with structural oppressive systems, it is essential to identify how our identities play significant roles in our personal lives, as students, and as effective student org leaders. During this session, participants will learn how their identity can “show up” through scenario-based activities, tips on how to create equitable and inclusive spaces, and recommendations on how to disrupt implicit and explicit bias.

Green Dot Bystander Intervention Preview

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Presenters: Jasmine Lee and Jeff Cullen

Abstract: Power-based personal violence, which includes sexual violence, partner violence, or stalking, occurs at devastatingly high levels on our campus. But power-based personal violence is not inevitable. It can be prevented. Green Dot is built on the premise that in order to measurably reduce the perpetration of power-based personal violence, a cultural shift is necessary. In order to create a cultural shift, a critical mass of people will need to engage in a new behavior or set of behaviors that will make violence less sustainable within our community. The “new behavior” is a green dot. The critical mass is YOU: your organization, your executive board, and your members. This session is a preview of the skills taught in the Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training, available upon request to all student organizations. We need you and your organization as partners in the project of canceling the culture that supports sexual violence at UMBC.

Creating a Virtual Space for Involvement Fest

1:45 pm - 2:45 pm

Presenters: Tori Heasley and Amber Moore (Lift Innovate)

Abstract: This session will prepare organizations for Involvement Fest by teaching them how to create, manage, and utilize a virtual space through Webex. This will be the platform used for recruitment during Involvement Fest.

Becoming a Retriever Leader: Authenticity, Team-Building & Collective Action

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Presenter: Beatriz Gutiérrez-Malagón

Abstract: When it comes to leadership, everyone has an integral role in accomplishing the desired goals of a team. For a student organization to run effectively its officers need to be mindful of how they show up as individuals, how to work with others, and how to take action. In this session we will be utilizing student leadership concepts to analyze where you currently stand as a student leader and as a student organization. By the end of the session participants will be able to identify areas of strength, areas for growth and positive changes that could be made within their role or their organization during their time at UMBC.

If you have any questions please email Courtney Campbell at cocamp@umbc.edu.

Online Leadership Challenge Day 5

<Tagline>Followership; the unsung hero</Tagline>

For today's challenge we are going to dive into a not-so-popular topic. When it comes to discussing the subject of leadership, more often than not we find ourselves focusing on leaders and fail to give followers the proper recognition they deserve. In order to truly be a great leader, one must learn to be a great follower as well. Followership is about taking direction well, being an active member of a team and delivering what is expected of you. Leadership and followership are fundamental roles that individuals shift into and out of under various conditions. Everyone—leaders included—is a follower at one time or another.

Therefore, if you find yourself in the role of a follower be sure to take note of the qualities and skills you pick up during that experience. This will not only help you be an effective follower, it can assist you on your path to becoming the leader you wish to be. When followers embrace their integral role in the process of leadership, they create a positive impact for the team and cause they serve.

Watch this super short TED video on How to Start a Movement:
tinyurl.com/followership2010

Day 5 Challenge Questions:

What are your reactions or thoughts?

What do you think about the way the speaker discusses the importance of followers?

For reference, to access the Challenge Guidelines click on the "Download Image" button below.
Online Leadership Challenge Day 4

<Tagline>Values; our compass to decision-making, behaviors and life</Tagline>

For Challenge Day 4, we are going to focus on values. The values that we each hold are important because they help us grow, develop, and create the future we want to experience. The decisions that are made on an individual and group level, are actually a reflection of our values and beliefs, and they are typically always directed towards a specific purpose or need. Think of values as a compass, that weighs in on inner judgments or beliefs, which then helps determine decisions and behaviors while navigating the life or reality an individual or group wishes to live.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on your own personal values. Individual values reflect how you show up in your life, your specific needs, the principles you live by and what you consider important for your self-interest. Below is a sample list of values, take a minute or so to go over each one:

- Achievement
- Adventure
- Beauty
- Connectedness
- Courage
- Creativity
- Dependability
- Determination
- Empathy
- Empowerment
- Family
- Friendship
- Fun
- Happiness
- Health
- Honesty
- Independence
- Individuality
- Integrity
- Intelligence
- Justice
- Kindness
- Learning
- Love
- Peace
- Perfection
- Relationships
- Religion
- Security
- Simplicity
- Sincerity
- Spirituality
- Spontaneity
- Success
- Understanding
- Wealth

After reviewing the terms above, post your top 5 values along with your response to the following questions.

Day 4 Challenge Questions:

How would you like to make a difference at UMBC? And how is this goal related to your values determined on your top 5?

BONUS Question:

Looking at the groups to which you belong, how do the groups’ purpose/vision align with your values and interests?

For reference, to access the Challenge Guidelines click on the "Download Image" button below.
Online Leadership Challenge Day 3

<Tagline>Social identities; the ever evolving self-portrait of you</Tagline>

Today's challenge is all about YOU! Mainly, we'll be focusing on the identities that make up who you are as an individual, leader, and person in the world. Identity is an ever evolving self-portrait; the on-going take, retake and update of "who am I". It changes overtime, and something important to not about identities is that some may be visible and some are not. Identity is also known to be a socially constructed concept grounded in: historical, political, cultural norms, and lived experiences. Ultimately, our identities result from our own navigation and meaning making of self, context, and relationships.

Take a moment, and simply think about all the pieces that make up the complex being of you. Using a physical sheet of paper or a virtual blank document, write or type the following:

Age

Sex

Gender Expression

Ethnicity

Race

Physical/Emotional/Cognitive Capability

Socio-Economic Class

Sexual Orientation

Religion/Spirituality

Geographical Origin

Reflect on the identities and descriptors mentioned above. On your personal paper or document, note the following:

Which are most central to how you define yourself? Mark them with a star.

What are central to how others define you? Mark them with an arrow.

Which brings you most joy? Or pride? Mark them with a smiley face.

Which would you like to understand further? Mark with a question mark.

Day 3 Challenge Questions:

As you look at your words and markings, what stands out to you?

Which of these identities empower your voice as a leader?

For reference, to access the Challenge Guidelines click on the "Download Image" button below. Normally, we meet weekly in the kitchens on campus to cook dishes suggested by our members. Our club is focused on the connections food brings, whether between neighbors or people on different continents; we’ve done collabs with the Filipino Student Association, the Anime Society, and the hot beverage club among others because we value meeting people with diverse perspectives and interests. There are no fees required to join, and we’d be glad to welcome anybody who wants to share experiences, broaden their knowledge of food, and be a part of a community.

<Tagline>Feedback, Self, and Bonus Question!</Tagline>

For Challenge Day 2 we will focus on seeking feedback. Surrounding yourself with peers and mentors who are willing to give you honest feedback will significantly impact your ability to be self-aware and enhance your self-understanding. We all have blind spots, and others are likely to identify things we normally don’t see in ourselves.

In this challenge we will be doing an activity that will help you gain feedback from your friends and family. Your challenge is to complete an online self-assessment based on the Johari Window, a psychological instrument used to demonstrate your knowledge of yourself in comparison to how others perceive you.

Here are the steps:

1. Complete your 1-minute self assessment using this link: http://kevan.org/johari

2. Email your unique link to a few friends and family. Ask them to complete the assessment about you. Tell them to be honest because this feedback will help you grow and giving helpful, constructive feedback is a sign of love for another person.

Day 2 Challenge Questions:

What is your reaction to this activity?

What did you learn about yourself with the help of your family and friends?

BONUS Question:

In what ways do you believe this connects back to leadership (or how you show up as a leader)?

For reference, to access the Challenge Guidelines click on the "Download Image" button below.
