Interested in volunteering in a hospital environment?  Want to be part of a supportive team?  

Saint Agnes Hospital is looking for volunteers this spring.  Meet with their Volunteer Coordinator to hear about the supporting role you could play, and learn about volunteer opportunities. 

PLEASE NOTE:  Volunteering with Saint Agnes Hospital is a 60-hour commitment for the semester. Please review your academic schedule to make sure you have a plan to meet this requirement.  Hours must be completed within the semester you volunteer.  There will be no flexibility in this requirement.  

All screenings must be completed quickly and volunteers should be ready to start no later than the first or second week of February 2020!  

Your Check List:
  • Stop by the Shriver Center to pick up a Saint Agnes Volunteer Application and return the completed application to the Shriver Center (along with your letter of recommendation).  The Shriver Center will forward the application to the Volunteer Coordinator at SAH.  Only complete applications will be forwarded (with the exception of the Physician Release Form).   
  • Contact Michelle Slafkosky at: mslafkos@ascension.org to confirm receipt of your application and to schedule an interview/initial meeting.
  • Once you are all set to volunteer, contact the Shriver Center for enrollment in the 096 Practicum for the spring semester.  If upper-level elective credits are needed, we can also enroll you in SOCY 396 (learn more during your 096 practicum meeting).

Established in April 1995 by Samuel I. Rosenberg, this award is given to a UMBC student (any year) who has completed a public service-focused internship, with either a nonprofit or government organization, directly addressing a social challenge.

This Spring, Hana Morford (Education Director, Young Audiences) joins Stephen Bradley (Associate Professor, Visual Arts, UMBC) to co-teach a hands-on, interdisciplinary course this Spring, ART 400:  Teaching Artists, Thursdays, 2:30-5:40pm.

The students in the class will spend about 20 hours during the semester in classrooms at a North Anne Arundel county school.  Participants will also receive a Service-Learning & Community Engagement notation.  Spaces are still available.  Sign up for the course today!

Retriever Essentials will host its first seasonal Home for the Holiday Lunch on Thursday, November 28th, 2019, 12p-2p in the True Grits Dining Hall.

 

This lunch is a holiday-style potluck that will offer communal atmosphere to the UMBC members who can't travel back home or don't have families at the time of holidays. Participants can bring food items, holiday decorations, and will also have a chance to help to prepare some treats during the event. The event will also include activities such as board games, arts and craft table, karaoke, letter writing, and of course music and dancing! All UMBC members and their families are welcome.

This upcoming Spring, students from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County will be serving and partnering with Guatemalan and Panamanian communities to provide for their medical, dental, and legal needs through the nonprofit organization Global Brigades. Global Brigades is a student-led nonprofit organization that focuses on connecting students to Central America and West Africa to partner with local community members on health and sustainable development projects.

This team of hardworking college students are excited to apply what they learn in the classroom to experiences like this, but they need your help! Participants are responsible for fundraising a great amount of money to contribute to buying supplies and equipment. As a nonprofit organization, your donation would directly support improving the lives of Guatemalan and Panamanian rural indigenous populations.

The student leadership team this semester consists of Maryland raised Puerto Rican, Peruvian, and Salvadoran students who are determined to give back to their larger Latin American family and community. The group greatly appreciates support to empower the group financially.

To donate to their medical team, see the link below.  Please also consider coming to eat at the Mexican Salvadoran restaurant El Andariego in Olney, Maryland on Wednesday, November 20th. El Andariego has won several awards for their delicious cuisine and have been extremely kind to offer to 
donate a percentage of the money they make on November 20th to the Global Brigades' fundraising efforts.

El próximo primavera, estudiantes de la Universidad de Maryland, Condado de Baltimore viajarán a Guatemala y Panamá para
servir a las necesidades de empoderamiento médico y legal de las poblaciones indígenas allí a través de la organización sin fines
de lucro Global Brigades. Global Brigades es una organización sin fines de lucro organizado por estudiantes enfocados en
conectar a estudiantes universitarios con miembros de comunidades local en Centro América y África para proyectos de salud y
desarrollo sostenible.

Nuestro equipo de estudiantes universitarios trabajadores están entusiasmados para aplicar lo que aprendemos en la universidad a
experiencias como esta. Sin embargo, ¡necesitamos su ayuda! Somos responsables de recaudar fondos para contribuir a la compra
de suministros y equipos. Las brigadas globales son una organización sin fines de lucro, es decir todo su dinero estaría volviendo
a mejorar directamente las vidas de las poblaciones rurales guatemaltecos y panameñas!

In just one week from today, the Choice Program will be hosting an open house! We are asking for your help in servicing the community of Cherry Hill this Thanksgiving. Choice has been in Cherry Hill for 30+ years and is currently undergoing a process of creating a deeper bond with the residents of the neighborhood. With that in mind, we want to host a small food drive out of the Cherry Hill office on November 26th. We are teaming up with UMBC's UNICEF student org to get the needs met. We are aiming to create Thanksgiving baskets for 25 families, which will be passed out at our open house. Please see the attached list of things you can either donate directly:
