This semester, Campus Life is offering four different leadership programs for UMBC students! These programs are designed for skill-building, experiential learning, campus connections, and overall student development. Whether you're a student looking to get involved, become a leader, refine your skills, or add something extra to your résumé-- check us out! Below you will find a summary of each program, registration information, program dates and hyperlinks to event pages for more information:
The Leadershops series consists of workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and student leaders. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.
The following are the fall 2021 Leadershops sessions that are being offered for students to register through myUMBC:
This session is about taking a deeper look into the relationship between womxn and leadership. Attendees will learn about how our socialization affects our views regarding our own identity and our capacity to lead. This session will be done online.
The Author of Your Leadership Story is a leadership workshop that focuses on self-authorship; defining and creating you own individual sense of self, and making yourself as you go on your college journey. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.
Attendees will learn about the leadership process through team-building and capitalizing on difference. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.
This program is about getting more out of, rather than cramming more into, UMBC. This 5 week program helps first year, sophomore, and new transfer students craft a more fulfilling college experience by sharing practical tools and ideas and relating them back to their leadership and involvement plans for UMBC. Topics include exploring your interests, finding your place at UMBC, designing plans for your leadership and involvement experience, and so much more. This seminar incorporates small group discussion, in-class activities, field exercises, and personal reflection.
There are two cohorts available starting the week of October 5th and ending the week of November 2nd, 2021:
- Tuesdays 10:00am – 11:30am
- Oct 5th, Oct 12th, Oct 19th, Oct 26th, Nov 2nd
- In-person meetings at The Commons
True Grit Cohort
- Wednesdays 1:00pm – 2:30pm
- Oct 6th, Oct 13th, Oct 20th, Oct 27th, Nov 3rd
- In-person meetings at The Commons
Chip Cohort
- Thursdays 3:00pm – 4:30pm
- Oct 7th, Oct 14th, Oct 21st, Oct 28th, Nov 4th
- Online meetings via Webex
To participate, you must be available to attend all of the sessions of your selected section of Leadership Blueprint. Registration closes at 11:59pm on Monday, September 27th, 2021.
Emerging Leaders is a day long experience for students who are interested in developing their leadership capacity and learning more about the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development. SCM at it’s core, approaches leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change.
The Social Change Model sees leadership as purposeful, collaborative, and a values-driven process. Titles or positions are not needed in order to be a leader. Leaders work to improve the groups and communities they are part of. Through this approach, anyone can be a leader, because “leaders” are those who want to make a difference. This kind of collaborative process means that groups must have trust, which requires that group members act in ways that are consistent with their own beliefs and values as well as the group’s goals. Food will be provided at this event.
This program will take place in-person at The Commons 331 on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 from 10:30am – 3:30pm.
Registration closes on Friday, October 1st at 12:00pm.
The purpose of the Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE) is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify with diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers.
This year's MLE Mini-Series theme is Deconstructing Grit and Greatness! Below you will find the event links to the three sessions we will be offering this semester. All meetings will be done in-person at The Commons. Students are welcome to sign-up for any or all available session(s):
Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach in relation to resiliency.
Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach by engaging in inter-cultural dialogue and utilizing emotional intelligent capacities.
Participants will connect their understanding of our campus community and tools learned in order to collectively co-create a new definition for Inclusive Excellence.

Join us as we Deconstruct Grit and Greatness!

This year's MLE Mini-Series theme is Deconstructing Grit and Greatness! Below you will find the event links to the three sessions we will be offering this semester. Students are welcome to sign-up for any or all available session(s).
Due to COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions, we are at a limited capacity of 20 seats. Due to this, we highly encourage attendees to register in advance. Doors will open 10 minutes prior to start time, all registrants will have their spot saved until 5 minutes post-start time. In which we will then open available seats to all on a first come first serve basis.
This first session of the mini series will focus on the topic of Reconstructing Resilience, specifically on how it's dictionary definition (i.e. the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness) can create an environment that cultivates toxic positivity, specifically during hardship and/or trauma. Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach in relation to resiliency.
Exploring Empathy and Giving Grace - October 26th, 1pm - 2:15pmThe second session of the mini series will focus on the topic of
Exploring Empathy and Giving Grace, specifically on exploring one's emotional intelligence in understanding others, as well as reflecting our own personal needs. Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach by engaging in inter-cultural dialogue and utilizing emotional intelligent capacities.
This third session of the mini series will focus on the topic of Decoding Inclusive Excellence, specifically on questioning what Inclusive Excellence means in the context of UMBC and beyond. Participants will connect their understanding of our campus community and tools learned in order to collectively co-create a new definition for Inclusive Excellence.
Each mini series session will provide participants with:
- connections to campus and resources
- meaning-making through reflection and group discussions
- leadership learning through the lens of multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion
- and opportunities to engage with other students across different areas of campus involvement

In April of 2021, UMBC Mock Trial defeated Yale University to win the 2021 AMTA National Championship. UMBC is the #1 ranked team in the country for collegiate Mock Trial - and now we want you to help us defend our title this year!
Mock Trial is an exciting and dynamic opportunity for Sociology students. By joining Mock Trial, you will join a close-knit group of driven teammates and coaches who will help you learn about the law, become a great public speaker, and prepare for law school or your future career. You'll travel across the country to Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Boston, and so many other great places - all paid for by the program! 20 years ago, on September 11, 2001, coordinated terrorist attacks in the U.S. killed almost 3,000 people.
Pivotal Moments: Memories of UMBC’s Response to 9/11 will offer a glimpse into the experiences of members of the campus community in the hours and days following the attacks. People who were at UMBC in September 2001 will share their stories of how they responded individually and collectively, and reflect on the lasting impact of these events on UMBC.

About the panelists:
Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, (he/him) has served as President of UMBC since 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. Alongside philanthropist Robert Meyerhoff, he co-founded the nationally recognized Meyerhoff Scholars Program, which is open to all high-achieving students committed to pursuing advanced degrees and research careers in science and engineering, and advancing underrepresented minorities in these fields. Dr. Hrabowski was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report, one of America’s 10 Best College Presidents by TIME Magazine, and one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World”. In 2012, President Obama named Dr. Hrabowski to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. Dr. Hrabowski serves as a consultant to the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Academies, and universities and school systems nationally. He also serves on the boards of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, France-Merrick Foundation, Marguerite Casey Foundation (Chair), T. Rowe Price Group, The Urban Institute, McCormick & Company, and the Baltimore Equitable Society.
Diane Lee (she/her) is currently director of The Wisdom Institute, UMBC’s association for retired staff and faculty. Previously, she was a member of the Education Department and Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. As a faculty member she taught graduate courses including Human Learning and Cognition and The Study of Teaching. While serving in the UMBC administration she co-taught a First-Year Seminar with Jill Randles titled Turning to One Another: Beliefs and Behaviors. Dr. Lee was selected Presidential Teaching Professor 1997-2000, is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key honor societies, and was named as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women in 2009.
Brett Ashley McKenzie (she/her) graduated from UMBC cum laude in 2004 with an honors degree in English and minors in History and Writing. Brett held positions at The Retriever Weekly for her full four years at UMBC, including as Editor-in-Chief her senior year. Upon graduation, Brett went to work for then Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign as a media relations operative, and has continued her career in communications, marketing, and public relations ever since. Working for then-President Obama's re-election only six weeks after the birth of her daughter was a highlight. Today she is a Chicago-based mom to Sophie (9) and Nathan (5), the senior manager of content and community for Foresight Insurance, and a board member for Baltimore-based Capoeira Social Project, which was founded by fellow class of '04 alum Justin West.
Tom Moore (he/him) is Director of Arts and Culture in Institutional Advancement, a position he has held since arriving at UMBC in 1995. Over the past 26 years, he has raised the profile of UMBC's arts programs through media placements in outlets such as The New York Times and National Public Radio, stewarded the university's presence at events such as Light City and the Spark Gallery, and cultivated relationships with donors and thought leaders in the Baltimore arts community. He helped plan UMBC's 30th, 40th and 50th anniversary events, participated in the design of the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, and led the production of The Salons at UMBC, a series of cultivation events. Recently, he was instrumental in the launch of the Catonsville Arts District and serves as the chair of its advisory board.
Karim Said (he/him) is a self-described professional computer nerd and Deputy Chief Information Security Officer at NASA. He’s a triple UMBC alum: B.S., Computer Science, ’04, M.S., Information Systems, ’07, M.S., Human-Centered Computing, ’13. He lives in DC and visits the UMBC campus to run the loop, which is still his favorite spot for a quick two-mile workout with a heavy dose of nostalgia. Karim worked for Residential Life with the Erickson Hall front desk staff, played club lacrosse, and was involved in the Student Government Association.

Interact Dialogues – September 5 – October 18, 2021
TheInteract Dialogues Program, is an experience designed for first year and transfer students to learn and practice skills to become inclusive leaders and engaged community members. Each dialogue group is facilitated by Resident Assistants and past Interact participants. You will meet in-person small groups for a short, weekly session to learn foundational dialogues skills, and to practice empathetic and generous listening, cross-cultural storytelling, and critical self-reflection.
