This course investigates what we eat and, as a consequence, who we are. By taking a cross-cultural perspective, students will examine the politics of food production, the values associated with food preparation, and the material and social dynamics of food consumption. Through readings, films, field trips, demonstrations, and tastings, the course offers an interdisciplinary and dynamic pedagogical approach to analyzing cooking and eating¿activities central to daily life and to social forms more broadly. Local- and global-level issues will be addressed as students explore histories, economics, social issues, and identity formation related to food.

Candace and Yoo-Jin will speak on the theme of women of color "Telling Our Stories." This year, we are inspired by the recent revival of the Telling Our Stories project, and hope to continue encouraging women of color to speak truth to power through their own unique experiences and perspectives.

Special Topics Course:  ANTH 317 Energy and Crisis

The course explores issues of global significance from a cross-cultural perspective by focusing on the tensions between increasing diversity of perspective in an increasingly interdependent world. From the view points of an emergent anthropology in action, we will examine the comparative, cross-cultural contexts of demographic change, ecology, economic development, information systems, international health, and nationalism. We will study anthropological texts that broaden the cultural analysis of the global change process and its effects on institutions and communities.

Fall semester is soon approaching! We hope you had an incredible summer! We can not believe that we are at the beginning of another academic year! We are quite excited to see all the new and returning faces on campus!  

The Mosaic is now open after our summer renovation. Please note that Summer Session Hours are still in effect until tomorrow, Tuesday, August 27, 2019. We will start our new Fall Hours, on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 and will end on Friday, December 20, 2019.

Our Fall hours are as follows:
Campus Life's Mosaic:
Monday: 9:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.
Tuesday - Thursday: 9:30a.m. - 6:00p.m.
Friday: 9:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.
Weekends: Closed
Campus Life's Interfaith Center (IFC): 
Sunday - Saturday (7 Days a Week): 7a.m. - 11p.m.
Campus Life's Queer Student Lounge (QSL): 
Monday - Friday: 7a.m. - 11p.m.
Weekends: Closed

Our Diversity and Inclusion lounge spaces will to be available to students, staff, faculty and their visitors on a "first come, first seated" basis.  Free coffee, tea, cold beverages and periodic snacks will be available during this time. We're trying to be more sustainable!  If possible, please bring your own travel mug or cup with you. 

Important FYIs:
The Mosaic will close early periodically throughout the semester to accommodate programming and workshop trainings. Please stay tuned to myUMBC for any updates. 

Lisa Gray, Associate Director for Student Diversity and Inclusion is still in the Campus Life's Main Office (The Commons: 336) but will come back down to the Mosaic in the upcoming weeks. She can still be reached at lisamgray@umbc.edu. 

Carlos Turcios and Erin Waddles, Coordinators for Student Diversity and Inclusion, will be available to meet with community members during their office hours.

We're reopening soon! The biggest phase of construction, a new office for our Associate Director, has finished!  However, now that the dust is settling, we need to reset our space and train our new Diversity and Inclusion Peers for their work with us this academic year.  With that in mind, Campus Life's Mosaic will reopen officially for Welcome Week and the Fall semester on Monday, August 26.  

From Aug. 20-23 (Campus Life's area and department-wide student staff training period), we are still reachable by email via mosaic@umbc.edu.  **For urgent matters, please reach out to us via Campus Life's main office in Commons 336 or it's main phone number at 410-455-3462.**
