<Tagline>Today is Eid al-Adha, otherwise known as Tabaski</Tagline>

Eid al-Adha, known as Tabaski in West Africa, is a Muslim holiday to honor the prophet Ibrahim's (pbuh) acceptance to sacrifice his only son at Allah's request. At the last minute, Allah intervened and provided a lamb for sacrifice instead. Today, Muslims around the world celebrate this holiday with a feast, blessings, and reconciliation.

In West Africa, people save up for months to buy sheep to prepare in various ways on this day, and everyone gets dressed up in their finest bazin clothing to greet their neighbors and friends. The children roam the streets in groups, shouting "Salimafo!!" (happy holidays) and expect a treat. It's a festive day every year!

A team of researchers from Ohio State and Boston Universities say the answer to both questions is yes.

The study was conducted by economists Katherine B. Coffman and Lucas C. Coffman of Ohio State University and Keith M. Marzilli Ericson of Boston University

They used a novel research method that, in addition to the usual privacy and anonymity afforded by the best practice survey techniques, goes further and makes it virtually impossible to connect individual respondents with their answers to sensitive questions. They call this technique the “Veiled Report” method.

Then they compared their findings with the results obtained as part of the “Veiled Report” experiment with responses from a control group that answered questions posed in a more conventional way. Their goal was to see how social desirability bias—the tendency for people to not to reveal behaviors or attitudes that they fear may be viewed as outside the mainstream—may affect reporting on these sensitive topics..."

Meet a DEI: Saniya Chaudhry

Bio:

Saniya Chaudhry is a current sophomore studying Biology. She plans on graduating UMBC and entering pharmacy school and getting her PharmD, possibly do a residency after. In addition to being a DEI, she is a certified pharmacy technician, and events coordinator of the Pre Pharmacy Society. She enjoys spending time with her family, sleeping, singing, listening to music, and eating. She loves to learn new things and is a very curious person. This year, she hopes to open people’s hearts and minds and gain knowledge as well.

Q. What made you get involved with The Mosaic Center as a Diversity Educator Intern?

I wanted to try something new and learn about different people's perspectives on issues.

Q. What might someone be surprised to know about you?

When I was little, I invented another planet called Weird-O-World and used to go around giving speeches about how awesome it was.....I was a strange kid. Also, I am a shopaholic.

Q. When you aren’t performing DEI duties, what are you most likely doing?

I am most likely in class, at work, listening to music, eating, or sleeping. That sums up my life.

Q. How would (someone) describe you?

Someone close to me would describe me as hard working, and caring (I hope).

Q. What do you wish other people knew about The Mosaic Center?

It is a public space, you can come in and eat lunch, do homework or just relax.

Q. What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about diversity?

Diversity is something to be proud of, that a bunch of people with different beliefs or even appearances can live and cooperate with each other.

Q. What's your personal philosophy on what should be done about promoting communal diversity and inclusion?

It should be our duty as human beings to make others feel a part of the community and respect who they are, and try not to change them. Everyone has something to offer.

Meet a DEI: Jennie Williams

Bio: Jennie Williams is a senior and a Sondheim scholar majoring in American Studies and minoring in sociology. Jennie works as an office assistant in the UMBC Political Science department, and for the past two years, became involved in the campus community by working as a Residential Assistant. Jennie is an Undergraduate Research Award recipient this year and her research is based on exploring the benefits of open mic nights throughout the Baltimore area. Jennie is very involved in her department and is the treasurer of the American Studies Council of Majors.

Jennie has been interning with Maryland Traditions of the Maryland State Arts Council for the past few semesters because she believes that it is very important to work closely with her mentors in order to improve her skills and to build her professional network.

Q. What made you get involved with The Mosaic Center as a Diversity Educator Intern?

I wanted to be involved as a Mosaic Center DEI because I am a senior at UMBC this year and I was looking for a brand new way to get involved on campus. I had been involved in a number of organizations throughout my time here, but I'm always interested in trying something new.

Q. What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I am a vegetarian, I drive a hotrod '80s station wagon, I have a knack for finding 4-leaf clovers, and I can balance across a slackline.

Q. When you aren’t performing DEI duties, what are you most likely doing?

Playing guitar and singing at the open mic nights throughout Baltimore/ working on my URA research.

Q. How would (someone) describe you?

I've heard that I'm chill, a hippie, a good friend, a hard-working student, and I am happy to agree with those things :)

Q. What do you wish other people knew about The Mosaic Center?

That it is such a great place to come in and visit with others, to make new friends, and to have thought-provoking conversations! You can learn a lot from someone and about their cultural backgrounds just by listening to what they have to say.

Q. What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about diversity?

Diversity is one of the most important qualities about a group of people because it allows there to be potential for significant learning, compromise, consideration, and accomplishments to take place. Without diversity, individuals are destined to become ethnocentric in their perspectives of the world. These views can be far removed from the realities that exist.

Q. What's your personal philosophy on what should be done about promoting communal diversity and inclusion?

I believe there needs to be quality opportunities for voluntary socialization of a variety of ethnic groups. Not only are the opportunities needed, but individuals need to be willing and brave enough to step out of their familiar social circles in order to include themselves in new and unfamiliar groups. Without conversation and a genuine interest in forming new relationships, diversity will suffer and inclusion will continue to be a challenge among social and ethnic groups.

    Bio:
Carmen is a junior studying History and Business Technology Administration. In addition to being a DEI, she is a SUCCESS Program intern. SUCCESS is a program on campus that gives young adults with intellectual disabilities a 4-year college learning experience. Carmen also dedicates time to the Hispanic Latino Student Union as Vice President and is employed with the UMBC Department of Undergraduate Admissions as a blogger and student assistant. In her free time, she enjoys dancing, trying new foods and traveling. She is excited about the new adventures being a DEI will bring.

Q. What made you get involved with The Mosaic Center as a Diversity Educator Intern?

I have always been passionate about the advocacy of Diversity and saw this as a learning opportunity to strengthen my advocacy and facilitating skills.

Q. What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I used to bellydance.

Q. When you aren’t performing DEI duties, what are you most likely doing?

I really love to dance, any kind of dance. At my house, we usually host Hispanics and do some Latin dancing in the kitchen. With my friends, we travel to new places and try new things.

Q. How would (someone) describe you?

I am proud to be Mexican-American. I am not afraid to speak my mind, and Iove learning new cultures.

Q. What do you wish other people knew about The Mosaic Center?

I wish people knew how welcoming everyone who works there is. If you have ever felt like you don't belong somewhere, you can always come to the Mosaic Center, where you are sure to be accepted.

Q. What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about diversity?

I really believe in acceptance and respect. I believe that even if someone is different than you by culture or belief, that is still important to accept and respect them.

Q. What's your personal philosophy on what should be done about promoting communal diversity and inclusion?

Baby steps. One person's attitude towards another person can change a person's whole day or their whole perception of that group of people. I think as individuals we have the power and obligation to make a change for the greater population.
