SUMMER COURSE SOCY 374: Drugs and Alcohol in Society Course explores various substances referred to as "drugs" Drugs and Alcohol in Society uses a sociological framework to explore implications of various substances conventionally referred to as “drugs.” Topics of discussion will include the history of drug use in the U.S., the social construction of epidemics and drug scares, the social costs of the drug war, and policy alternatives to prohibition. Throughout the course, special attention will be paid to the prescription opioid and heroin crisis.

The course provides an overview of causes and consequences of alcohol and drug abuse from the sociological perspective. The effects of society, family, peers, ethnicity and the media on alcohol, tobacco,and drug use will be discussed along with the historical framework of individual drugs. Additionally, theories of addiction, theories of use, use within subcultures, drug policy, and the relationship between substance abuse and crime will be examined. Discussion of controversial issues will include drug testing in social institutions, harm reduction, and legalization. 

Recommended Preparation: SOCY 101 or PSYC 100 or ANTH 211.

Race & Ethnic Relations provides a platform for open and supported discussion about what the country, and often the world, is talking about now. The course focuses on current events and relevant issues, and offers a perspective that will broaden and enlighten your thinking.

Some previous topics of discussion in the course include major court cases (Trayvon Martin, Eric Gardener, and Freddie Gray), the Oscars boycott, skin bleaching,  internalized oppression, and protests on college campuses.

As the population of the U.S. continues to age, it is becoming increasingly more important to provide for the housing, care and social needs of the "Silver Tsunami". This course explores the changing needs and wants of the elderly and the preparation necessary to transition from the work environment to the retirement phase of life.  

This course surveys a very important service and policy component of the health care system. A brief history of the evolution of long-term care provides the foundation to analyze issues such as social, economic and political environments, as well as credentialing, insurance and reimbursement.

ANTH 211: CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY

GEP "Culture" OR "Social Science" (3 credits)

Anthropology is both a theoretical and applied field involving the study of humanity in its socio-cultural dimensions. The goal of this course is to provide a broad perspective of human life through cross-cultural comparisons of topics such as language, race and ethnicity, economics, gender, politics, ritual, art, and religion. Students will learn how anthropological theories and methods developed over time, research skills, and how to present ideas effectively as a speaker and writer in a social science format. 

The course introduces students to the concepts, approaches, and skills of a particular discipline - Cultural Anthropology concerned with intercultural studies. The class will examine various anthropological approaches to understanding human behavior, and highlights insights to other cultures as well to our own culture.

Over-Policed, Yet Underserved: The People’s Findings Regarding Police Misconduct in West Baltimore


Dr. Charles Cange, visiting lecturer in Health Administration and Policy Program (HAPP), Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), is a member and research consultant for W. Baltimore Community Commission on Police Misconduct.  Findings were released in a reported entitled Over-Policed, Yet Underserved: The People’s Findings Regarding Police Misconduct in West Baltimore  and were reported at press conference (http://www.noboundariescoalition.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/No-Boundaries-Layout-Web-1.pdf). 

 

Since then, the report has been covered by several international and national outlets: The New York Times, The Guardian (US and UK), The Independent (UK), The Huffington Post, and The Baltimore Sun.  UMBC Sociology Masters student, Nick Jacobsen, provided Dr. Cange with qualitative and quantitative analytic support during the research process.
