Course Promotions- Lab GEP
SCI 101L - Great for COEIT majors!
Here is the info about the course I discussed in class this week.
This interdisciplinary science laboratory course will expose students to different science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines through a series of modules centered on the common theme of measurement. All projects require mastering basic quantitative skills, high-order reasoning, and the practical use of laboratory measurement tools.
This course is also designed as a CURE (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience), allowing students to undertake original research experiments with unknown outcomes. Each module will focus on the field of Integrative Biology, examining insect biology from the scales of genes to whole organism performance, using tools from physics, engineering, and computer science.
This course has a GEP “S” designation and has a Laboratory component (2 credits).
Meeting times:
Monday: 1 – 1:50pm
Wednesday: 1 – 5:00pm

May 15: A retirement open house for Tim Ford
Come celebrate Tim's wonderful contributions to UMBC!
Dear Members of the CNMS community,
George C. “Tim” Ford, Jr., the manager of Research Graphics in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, retired at the end of April. The UMBC community is cordially invited to a Retirement Open House to be held in his honor on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 from 3 – 5 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge, The Commons 3rd Floor.
Tim first started working at UMBC in 1973 as a member of the grounds crew while on summer break from his studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. He started his career at UMBC a few years later when Marty Schwartz, then chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, hired him to produce photos and illustrations for the biological sciences, psychology, and chemistry and biochemistry departments.
During his more than 40 years at UMBC, Tim has used his expertise in photography and the combination of text, color, and illustrations to assist thousands of students and faculty in preparing for invited talks, poster presentations, publications and external funding proposals. His extraordinary talent and service were acknowledged in 2017 when his position transitioned to a CNMS appointment. His exemplary service to UMBC has included terms as president and vice president of the Professional Staff Senate, voting representative on the Council of University System Staff (CUSS), and member of the University Steering Committee. Retirement will offer Tim more time to spend with his family and on his hobbies of boat building and sailboat racing.
The May 15 Open House is hosted by the Department of Biological Sciences and CNMS. All of Tim’s many friends and colleagues are encouraged to attend.
