Never has the need for international diplomacy seemed more pressing. The international community is struggling mightily with interstate wars, civil wars, ethnic conflicts, climate dilemmas and the resultant migration flows. This fascinating course in three weeks, will provide you with a hands on approach to international negotiation through case studies and a multiparty negotiation exercise. Key conceptual notions include two-level games and mediation approaches. Whether you aspire to be a global diplomat or would just like to improve your negotiation skills for interactions with your professors, boss, colleagues or classmates, this course will set you on a path to success. 

Special topics include the role of the media in agenda-setting, the importance of non-state actors in the 21st-century diplomatic arena, and the challenges of public goods issues in international and transnational negotiations. As the American presidential election season heats up, these topics are both timely and terribly contentious. 

This course is offered as POLI 483 (cross-listed with GLBL 483) and is a hybrid course, which consists of face-to-face sessions on Wednesdays and online content.

They all relay and reveal American society and culture, and they all entertained millions of viewers as examples of America’s most enduring pop culture form. Learn how to analyze American society through its films in just three weeks as you explore the relationships between Hollywood images and issues of cultural change, political ideology, race and gender, labor history, and community continuity in the U.S.A. 

This is a great opportunity to understand the American culture and how it displays itself and other cultures in film in ONLY three weeks. 

This course is offered as AMST 322, and fulfills a general education requirement (GEP) in the Arts and Humanities.

Step on up and join the team! You don’t want to miss this special topics class provided by the Media and Communications department on Sports Production! Students will learn the basics of broadcasting and marketing collegiate sports through participation in the production and promotion of UMBC basketball games. 

Within three weeks students will have the opportunity to assist in the production and direction of game broadcasts, learn about camera operations, work in-game marketing entertainment, observe the facilitation of sponsorships, and contribute to the creation of post game highlight packages, among other tasks. Get your head in the game and learn the ropes on broadcasting, marketing, and visual production behind collegiate sports.

The Start the Adventure Scholarship was born out of a desire by STA Travel to recognize both student and institution. Thus, $2500 is awarded to a deserving student and a matching donation of $2500 is made to the student's home university or college to award to an additional student of their choice for study abroad, thereby making each scholarship twice as powerful.

The STA Travel Start the Adventure timeline for students who will begin their study abroad programs between January and June 2016 is as follows:

Application Opens: Monday, October 12, 2015 (before 5 PM MDT)

Application Deadline: Friday, November 6, 2015, 5 PM MDT

Award Announced: Wednesday, December 30, 2015 (before 5 PM MDT, subject to change)

The top three applicants will be interviewed by STA Travel staff.  Applicants should be:

1. Willing to be an advocate for meaningful travel, international education, and equal access to these opportunities for fellow students
2. Creative in demonstrating how you advocate for meaningful travel and international education
3. Able to answer the question: “Why is it important for students to participate in international education programs?"

Final selection of the scholarship recipient will be made by STA Travel.

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 25 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2016. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 1,550 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 75 students from colleges and universities in 34 states received scholarships for study in Japan in the Fall 2015 semester.

Spring 2016 study programs are those beginning between January and April 2016 and continuing for at least three months, for a semester or an academic year. Bridging Scholarships are not awarded for summer-only study programs.

The deadline for applications for Spring 2016 scholarships is October 8, 2015. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese.

The Education Abroad Network (TEAN) has a Full Ride Scholarship for one deserving student to study abroad with them!  

We at UMBC's Study Abroad Office encourage you to apply for this special scholarship for Spring 2016. It will cover tuition, program fees, housing and round-trip airfare for any of the partners participating in the 20 for 20 campaign. Total value of the scholarship is up to $30,000 USD. 

The scholarship was designed to give a student the once in a lifetime opportunity to study abroad. TEAN wants to help a stand-out student study abroad with no restrictions, who might not have the opportunity otherwise.
