Need Arts & Humanities or Culture GEP Credit This Summer? Learn from An Experienced Archaeologist with ARCH 220 Archaeologist and UMBC Instructor Meredith Fraser is currently in the field in Egypt, and will join Summer Session II in a few weeks to lead the course “Archaeology of Ancient Egypt” (ARCH 220). Students will have the opportunity to learn first-hand from an expert who has vast knowledge of Old, Middle and New Egypt and extensive archaeological experience.  The course, which is offered for Arts & Humanities and Culture GEP credit, will explore the rise and development of Egyptian civilization through the lens of the material culture they left behind.

This course is a 4-week course starting in Session II. It is offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

UMBC has opened up registration for Summer Session 2014. Summer session at UMBC makes graduating in four years easier to attain, by offering students an opportunity to catch up or get ahead on credits.

UMBC offers summer courses in two sessions. Session I courses start May 27, and Session II courses start July 7. Courses are offered over 4, 6, 8 and 12 week time frames.

Online, in-person, and hybrid courses, which blend in-person and online learning, are offered during the session. Summer Session 2014 courses span the disciplines, providing options for students who need to earn general education requirements or credits toward their major.

To meet the needs of the many UMBC students in science, mathematics, technology and engineering majors, UMBC provides a number of high-quality, introductory STEM courses. Students in Summer STEM courses will benefit from an active-learning methodology, dedicated faculty, and academic support.

Executive Director of the Bridging Project for Study Abroad in Japan:

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 60+ scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan during the 2014-2015 academic year or the Fall 2014 semester. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. April 8 is the deadline for receipt of student applications.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation, and administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 1,350 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan.

The deadline for applications for the Fall 2014 semester or the 2014-2015 academic year is April 8, 2014. Applicants will be notified of the results by May 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. (Students studying in Japan during only the Spring 2015 semester should wait until fall of 2014 to apply.)

In addition, Morgan Stanley Japan will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the 2014-2015 academic year. Applicants must submit a short essay on one of two designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is pleased to announce that the application for the 2014-2015 academic year scholarships (summer 2014, fall 2014, and spring 2015) opened November 18! Applications can be accessed via: http://www.fundforeducationabroad.com/applicants/

Scholarships are offered up to $5,000 per semester and are not limited to specific programs, destinations, or fields of study.  FEA awards funds to students planning to study abroad on academically rigorous programs with a
strong preference for underrepresented students.  In addition to their general
scholarships, FEA also awards the the Rainbow Scholarship, awarded to a deserving LGBTQ student who aims to participate in an education abroad program.

The Maryland International Education Association (MIEA) Scholarship deadline is October 18, 2013 for Spring 2014 study abroad programs. In recognition that Maryland graduates need experience in the global arena to be competitive in the job market, this scholarship opportunity is made possible by The Baltimore Community Foundation and the MIEA.

Applicants must be US citizens, residents of the state of Maryland, enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a Maryland institution of higher education and have at least a 3.2 GPA.  Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits while abroad in the Spring.   

Awards vary and are dependent on funding available each cycle.

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is a fully funded eight-week intensive language program for the study of intermediate or advanced Chinese, Japanese, or Russian, or beginning through advanced Korean, Indonesian, Persian, Turkish or several other South Asian languages. 

When we say fully funded, we mean fully funded. The only out-of-pocket costs include your passport and visa fees, and personal spending money.

Nanjing University is offering 30 grants (up to $1,000 per award) are now available to participants in CIEE’s Intensive Chinese Language + Culture Spring 2014 program from the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). These awards can be combined with any of the other generous scholarship programs offered by CIEE. Deadline for application is October 10, 2013, UMBC's Study Abroad application deadline.
